San Francisco Doom Loop: Is There a Way Out? | Tony Hall

- "San Francisco was a working little town with an enormous cash flow that was right for the boys to move in and take it over. It was a tourist town, within a business town, within a high real estate town, unlike any other city in America. It never had a negative cash flow. This is why the boys came in and took it over."
Siyamak sits down with Tony Hall, former San Francisco supervisor, who's been working for the city for 35 years. Mr. Hall shares an insider view on why the city is struggling and what it will take to fix it and return San Francisco to its glory.
"They got themselves elected to office. And they proceeded to monetize city services. Anything that can be farmed out to another agency and money made on it. Outside special interests became a huge force in San Francisco, starting in the 70s. Now, as they got control, they set up a political machine."

Tony Hall!!! Please run for Mayor.
I hope so but Tony is 72 years old and he would have a mountain of corrupt people to fight and will be behind the eight 🎱 ball.
@@frankgrima We have a inept President over 80 years old that likely had dementia. Tony has more brains left then 100 Biden’s.
He's actually 82 yrs old.
Mr. Hall would have been a great governor.
@@geoj8620 So true.
I don’t want the state of California to become a dumpster fire anymore. I want it be enjoyable again.
Tony Hall is always a great guest.

Stop talking, TAKE ACTION! I'm trying to get signatures from our Latino residents, but I don't speak Spanish. The majority (Latino) of Californians HAVE TO GET INVOLVED. I'm trying..
It’s not a easy job
I have a few suggestions, the city employees salaries are bloated, the mayor London Breed $366,475 ( NYC $259,000) do we need eleven board of supervisors at $170,000 , DA attorney $366,475, police chief $427,773, fire chief $474,209, SFUSD superintendent $378,712 and department of transportation $428,561
All these saleris exceeds every city in the country!
I suspect you have not included their benefits which could be as much as the salary or even more
Japan's highest-paid mayor earns around $120k per year, running a city with 10 times San Francisco's population.
Fraud's always overvalue EVERYTHING. These people have no value in the real world. Parasites.
its all about money!!! the extraction of your money from you!!!
It’s indeed ridiculous. I do believe part of the reason is because our city is both a city and a county, so they do the city and county work, which also causes our budget to be higher. In most cases, county funds and duties are separate from city funds and duties. In S.F., they are not.
What a great program - uplifting and hopeful. Tony Hall, what a great man - independent and honest. Quite simply, a real folk hero. May he succeed in his fight for his beloved San Francisco.
My native Sweden was as orderly and nice as San Francisco in the 1950s and 60s, although perhaps not as rich. Today, Sweden has roughly 10 times more inhabitants than San Francisco and is at least as mismanaged and in bad shape. Our biggest problem, however, is that we do not have a single person in politics, power and the establishment with the moral standing and integrity of Tony Hall. In that case, congratulations to San Francisco for having access to Tony Hall, and everyone should be grateful to California Insider for highlighting this people's fighter.
What a decent human being. Mr Hall you have all the great qualifications to become the mayor . Please run .
One of the most intelligent, insightful, honest and transparent interview I’ve seen in a long time. Well done. I live almost 4 hours from S.F. and last year I went to S.F. see Fran Lebowitz speak and she laid it out what was wrong with the City. The audience initially gasped and soon understood what she was saying what she was saying. She has no skin in the game, and she is a New Yorker. The audience listened and needed to hear truth. It was refreshing and amazing how she cuts through the bs. I hope talks like these continue, I wanna see the city make a comeback sooner than later. ❤
Thanks 😊 ! Pls Join our CA Insider newsletter: bit.ly/Cainsidernews
In order to fix San Francisco you would have to fix California. Can you believe that people can actually lived in California 125 years ago without the assistance of the government?
The voters voted for this.. It is what the people of California want.. Let them have their leftist utopia
You have to fix the people too. A city/state/country is only as good as its citizens.
Tony hits the nail on the head and as far as I'm concerned there is no turning that city around in our lifetime, far too much politics, corruption, crime and greed.
Tony
Please put that list together so the people can sign
I miss my hometown SF. It breaks my heart I can’t go back and raise my kids. But I will always visit not the same but it’s something ✨
It is very likely you could not afford it now. I sold an 1100 sq. ft. house in 2016 and last year it sold for over a million. It was a crappy neighborhood too. 437 Peninsula Ave.
Ironic, just read Tony's article in the Westside observer and here he is talking about it. This guy needs to be the next mayor to get this hell hole back on track.
Tony’s a great guest. He’s a reasonable man, seems to be of good character, and reminds me of the old America. It’s a tragedy that the current system and radically different demographics of today make any of his solutions all but impossible.
Tony explains it so well and has real solutions!
Great show as usual Siyamak. Thank you guys for continuing to fight for San Francisco and California!
Yes SF has been mismanaged but the turning point for the slide downhill came when the state decriminalized drugs, theft and homelessness. It was an invitation to all to come to the city, steal what you need, buy your drugs at the drug market and then sleep where you like. That was a state decision so maybe that’s why this wasn’t mentioned as an underlying factor but as a local, that’s what I observed as the moment everything went downhill. The pandemic caused the commercial real estate market to collapse but people who traveled to the city for work were tired of stepping over human feces to get to their office.
I'm born and raised in Seattle. But San Francisco is my favorite city. America needs San Francisco.
You must not have been lately.
@@Richard.Hybels I think you are looking for the OAN comment section
Here, hear! Agree with every point!
This entire interview and Tony’s ideas and solutions are reflective for our current healthcare system in the US as well as every point that he brings here (homelessness industrial complex, corruption within our government, local transportation issues. Thank you for this interview. I’ve shared it.
I believe his passion about SF, old good SF.
This guy is right on!👍🏻
I grew up in s.f all my life🙂. I love my city. So sad city so beautiful turned into 3rd world country. Just makes me want to cry.😭 "Bad things can happen to good people,When they pretend nothing is wrong." I do believe that city will rise again to greatness 🙏.
Sir, please run for Mayor. 😅
Tony for Mayor!
I absolutely love listening to Tony Hall. His heart and brain are in the right place. He is the best option SF has for a rebirth.
Mr. Hall, please run for mayor of SF or governor; dare I say the leader of our country? Have a peaceful evening.❤️🤍💙

I used to consider SF one of the safest large city.
Not anymore
you hate druggies !!!!!!!!!!
@@dks13827i mean who wouldnt they steal and destroy property. This is coming from a former druggie, i never stole anything and held a job the whole time i was a meth addict with a 2oz/month habit. The people i hung around stole like it was their job. They felt entitled to it because the companies make so much money and that entitled them too watever they wanted. They never payed rent in the apartment they were in milking the covid thing for as long as possible so they could buy more drugs. So yeah id be pist and agree with the commenter above. Its not hating druggies its hating what they do to support their habit and us honest people just have to put up with it. No thank you if they want help theregoing to be rules to follow and if you cant abide by them you're out
Born in SF but the city I knew is gone, so I left.
There can be no bouncing back without returning to work downtown.
Agree with your guest 100 percent. The police response time for a non-immediate threat is on the order of days if police ever shows up.
It was the arrival of Big Tech right, the dismantling of the military bases and support businesses, the excessive Real Estate speculation, The installing of the Sanctuary City policy which allowing sheltering of foreign criminal drug cartels like the Sinaloa and Honduran drug gangs. But it was the reliance on one industry and the exclusion of all others, Big Tech, that started the downfall. Tony keeps speaking about the Real Estate industry as always being high, but he forgets to mention that even working blue collar people could afford housing there. Not anymore.
Tony Hall has valid point; quit treating homeless people like constituents in order to be able to prioritize residents, many of them long-term.
What he said about the homeless is very true and how the state deals with it. Working with the honeless during covid and seeing how the city/ state just throws money to these businesses with contracts that expire so that they don't call it a permanent situation is ridiculous. They just close up shop and open at a diffrent location. Many of the homeless are transferred there as well. When speaking to these ppl they didn't want help, rehab, or work many of them being from it is state and only wanting the free amenities from California so that is any of there own money they had could go towards there addiction. I agree that everyone should be helped but only if they want the help. Those from out of state should be held to move back and receive the help from there home/origin state of residence. Californians wanting help should also receive it witout being cut in line from those out of state. Financially the way things are done is a rather corruptive way of doing business, it is not being managed properly or showing the results the state needs for improvement. And outsourcing important jobs like sheriffs and police deputies from other states has been something to rather frown opon. It takes years to know the neighborhoods the streets and citizens that live there the mom and pop shops. Gaining a sense of understanding towards the community and awareness of the compasion Californians have for their home.
What a beautiful time that was… civic pride.
Great! Telling everyone what we already know! Too bad the people in power will never do what’s right. Pretty easy for you to sit there and talk about it.

Tony is amazing, wish he was president
I am planning a trip to San Francisco, national parks, lA for a concert/ vacation and after doing some research I’m considering canceling it. Looks like everything is closed. I watched metal Leo and it looks deserted. I have been looking for hotels but prices are too high for nothing to do in the area, and so many fees.
Let me guess. The downfall started when some sleepy politician came along and said something along the lines of “My friends. They are screwing you. Elect me and we’ll fight back”.

SF has been a bubble that is still a bubble. No new property taxes and income, SF will run out of money unless they reduce the headcount in the city and public jobs.
London Breed getting 380,000 a year is a joke.
The new City Manager of Vallejo, Ca. Population 125k started yesterday at $303,000. But the actual cost is much more of course.
There is no fixing SF.

The real solution to the homeless problem is to repeal single-use zoning laws and minimum parking mandates that force car-centric suburban sprawl.
It’s all about values.
Fix the crime n homeless issues, everything will fall into place…
" Our own people " will sound very threatening and omnious to the people in charge my fren !
Tony understands what happened and is happening but his answer to how to fix it leaves out the main issue getting rid of the machine.
Good man, but tone deaf. The Progressive/Left votes exactly for what they get. Time and again. They don’t want the reforms he is discussing.
Best mayor ever in SF was businessman George Christopher who owned Crystal Creamery.
Christopher Dairy Farms. 555 Fulton St.
This guy is awesome, but I'm afraid the country is most likely finished at this point ...............?
Agreed, right choice voting is a form of proportional representation, the mediocre and fringe groups get in, so tail wags dog.
Build a wall around it Make it another country tax free and only let in people that have a net worth of 500000 something like monaco

I’d like to see the parklettes gone. They attract homeless & rats. Meanwhile perfectly good retail space is empty. The pandemic is over, get rid of all parklettes. Sidewalk seating is ok, but not on the street!
It's a dump and always will be.
Lots of good ideas - I would be concerned about the overall cost(s).
Loyola 1959
Sounds like New Orleans.
Inept London Breed & DA Brooke Jenkins will fix it🤣🤣🤣
Honestly don't really care about San Francisco, Never really care to watch the issues they have..
Most of the progressive BOS’s ...this is the best job they’ve ever had in their life. In reality they’d never make it in the private sector
On the surface reasonable and logical proposals for fixing some of San Francisco's problems, until you realize that this is America and any attempts to impose those fixes will be stymied by umpteen number of lawsuits. Then one has to consider that you would need the BoS and the Mayor's Office to jump on board. Would any of these political animals dare to step on the toes of their donors and powerful vested interests?
Imagine moving all the homeless to ensure the autocratic leader of the country supplying the fentanyl and other drugs that have decimated much of the downtown from seeing the consequences?
Telling other states Stop shipping the homeless and psycho to the bay area
Sadly California is too lost. None of those things will be implemented like ever. It’s ran by big money and what’s in it for me the big people
This guy is a clueless hack on transportation. One way street were created in the 1950s for the benefit of cars, speed and throughput. Its San Francisco... it's a dense compact city, there isnt enough room for everyone to drive and park unless you literally tear down half the buildings for parking lots and wider roads, its not suburbia.
Agreed, is there ever a sup that supports small businesses and transportation infrastructure? It’s one or the other.
No
Never goona be fixed. Too expensive to get a life in SFO.

He should be our mayor
Usually was a magical place -Alas no more.... what do you think about Kamala running for governor of California...???
Depends on your interpretation of "Magical". If ones interpretation of "magical" involves and includes rampant crime, political and bureaucratic malfeasance, ACTUAL Fascism (the incestuous coupling of corporate greed and politically corrupted power) A crushing of the public populace, vast homelessness, dystopian like future planning, delusional, utopian nonsensical envisioning in regards to development AND policy, degenerate destructive drug use not only allowed but in many cases INCENTIVIZED, perverse ideology realized and an authoritarian creep crawling across the land like a LOOOOOOONG drawn out shadow, then yes, yes its QUITE "Magical"!
Tony Please run for Mayor you have my VOTE
Tony doesn't get the homeless are not able to come here from elsewhere. They don't have money to afford mobility. He aslo refuses to prioritize why drug addiction is so bad.Quit thinking treatment is going to work when you are sheltering and protecting the people responsible the Drug Cartels from Honduras and Mexico.Get rid of the source of the issue first or rehabilitation is impossible. He mentions ZERO about enforcement.
Grew up in the City, my business is dead here, need to get out. Can't' touch the fix, San Francisco with close to 90% liberals will vote for more radical solutions driving it further into the ground. Shame it was a beautiful and worldwide prestigious City, now crazy town. As far as I could tell it started with Jerry Brown, so sorry I voted for him.
I can't say this guy seriously he didnt mention anything about reparations.
He didn't need to, because the God Emperor himself Führer Nuisance has declared it through State action. The Lunacy runs deep here in Phuqtatdistan (Formerly the Republic of Commieslavia)
“the machine”? Way too vague and sounds like he’s a conspiracy theorist
What will it take to get California to become a Conservative state?
Wow! He said the #metoo movement was about me me me. It was about women who were also abused. Every woman in my circle of friends has been abused or harassed at least once in their lives.
He just lost all credibility, old fart.
Didn’t you hear him correct his error? He misspoke! And don’t tell me “Freudian slip”.
If you think SF can be saved you're more stoned than the people who live there.
There is nothing you can do same here in New York. Remember there's always cash in chaos and the chaos is raging all around us
Okay I'm leaving just in, cause if you do not call out commies, ain't nothing gonna happen.
This broke my heart to hear how once again democrat demons destroyed an amazing city
Tony has moral values and loves San Francisco. Unfortunately, integrity and love of country are no match for the current cancer in the system or Klaus Schwab’s 2030 agenda which will have us all owning nothing and supplementing our meager meals with bugs.🥹
