NV094 Weihrauch HW95K Project Part 4. Fitted a tuning kit, fixed the trigger, made mistakes. Regret.

- Well that was fun. The gun was missing parts and the mystery tuning kit wasn't what I'd hoped for.
At least now the trigger is working properly though, which is nice.

No need to replace the spring Nick. Simply add a couple of slip washers ,you could do one at the front and one or two at rear this will also help with the felt recoil as a lot of it could be twisting or rather untwisting of the spring. The dieseling you experience is down to the grease you have used my friend. Molybdenum Disulphide paste is the Daddy when it comes to lubing airgun pistons Only a very light coat is needed at top and bottom of piston front and back of spring and on the washers or top hat and spring guide bearing surfaces. and a very light coat on the spring itself and I mean light. You may find that a steel top hat will help with the harsh firing you are experiencing also. But try the washers on the spring first with the Delrin set you have fitted. I know you mentioned Not Paying for a third party Tuning Kit but the likes of Tin Bum and Welsh Willy and Venom tuning kits would have put you right onto the sub 12fpe with properly finished ends to the provided springs and the cocking would be very smooth and light to boot. Great vids and good approach love them, all the best.
Hello Graham, thank you for your comment much appreciated 👍🏻. Basically yes, I messed up and should have bought a proper kit. I'm always looking for opportunities to help my subscribers save money, on this occasion it was a false economy. I'm in discussions with Arc tuning about a V-Mach kit for my HW98, reckon I will go that route with the HW95K eventually. I do have one other spring leftover from another project that I'm going to try, it is surplus to requirements so nothing to lose.
Just got to get the enthusiasm back (and the time) to work on it.
Absolutely appreciate your honesty, appreciate the no frills videos, we all suffer similar problems when working on our guns but it’s satisfying when we get it right. If at first you don’t succeed and all that. All the best keep the real videos coming Nick. Allen.
Thank you Allen, very much appreciated. Glad you are enjoying the videos.
Slaging off the best trigger group in the world for Springer's, helps if you have all the parts in it and adjusted properly, 😂🤣👍
I couldn't believe it, why on earth was that screw missing? 🙄 I can only assume it was removed to lighten the trigger by the same "individual" that fitted that square section spring...
Oh well, it got there in the end.
Very good rifle now.
As a "relaxed" airgun enthusiast, I find your videos clear and informative,I was recently given a BSA meteor mk5 which I doubt has been apart since new!
I intend to replace the spring/service it and enjoyed watching your efforts in dealing with it!
Great to hear normal day to day talk not pc "crap"!!
Keep em coming I am now looking forward to more of your videos, many thanks Dave
Thank you, very much appreciated.
Good luck with the BSA, they are nice bits of kit.
If you are in the UK John Knibbs is the place to buy BSA spare parts from.
All the best, Nick
Hot tip. Never grease a trigger. Its a dirt catcher, use dry lube if any.
Good call, thanks 👍🏻
When I watched the lad grease that trigger, I thought to myself now that something I wouldn't have done, and the amount of grease on everything 😳 well I wasn't surprised it was overpowered lol.
Try a tbt drop in kit just did mine and is excellent.
I think that will be plan c if plan b doesn't work out.
I feel your pain on this one buddy, my wife bought me a 95k. 177 cal and it wouldn't group for shit.
It's been a 3 year slog but last night I sorted it. Over the years I've re crowned it, added weight to the barrel, weight to the stock, tbt kits, different springs, you name I've done it.
I'm glad I persisted as I was thinking the other day that I'd just give it away as I knew know one would want to buy an over tinkered inaccurate gun, but now it shoots like my wildcat and hw100, easy 10 shot groups @ 25 meters under a 5p. Persistence is key
Thank you for the encouragement, much appreciated. I was going to get the HW95 out today and work on it. Then my wife wanted me to help her with some gardening.
What was the issue with yours please? I have the feeling this one will still give me trouble so forewarned is forearmed.
The whole issue was inconsistent grouping, I must have tried AT LEAST 15 types of pellet in various head sizes with minimal success, I knew the 177 cal was more prone to hold sensitivity and a greater muzzle flip but in the reviews I'd seen it didn't seem to be a much of an issue.
So after doing everything I could to help via Internet research and basically giving up, last night I thought I'd just give it one more go. So I took it all apart, cleaned the piston, cylinder and spring then gave it a light lubing with a mix of molly grease and car motor oil ( the one for cars with over 100k on the clock), a light smear on the piston, spring, delrin guide and top hat. ( nothing inside the cylinder as that will cause dieseling). I found that over greasing will cause velocity changes with temperature, sticky in winter and looser in summer. When I prep the spring I heat and compress the ends rather than cut them unless really essential because the gun won't latch when cocking, de berr and polish the ends.
The result was like night and day, the rifle now shoots many different pellets but favouring jsb exacts with 4.51 or 4.53 head size.
I Believe it was the moly / motor oil mix that made the difference, moly alone seemed to stiff and klagy and caused inconsistent movement in the piston travel. I do wish i had the 22 cal as I know they are more forgiving with regards to hold sensitivity and less muzzle flip due to the light spring spring energy.
I've had a tx 200 with the Tony leech light weight piston and a hw97 and I can honestly my hw 95k can now out perform them both.😂
Oh and I have swapped the weihrauch silencer for a hugger belita and that has also helped. 👍
Must confess I really don't like the grey moly grease that comes with "tuning" kits, I've found it always goes sticky no matter what the temperature. That's why I changed to standard wheel bearing grease but I like the idea of motor oil mixed with the grease.
Glad you got the rifle sorted and that it is performing well.
I'm really hoping to get some time over Easter to get my HW95 sorted, it is getting me down.
@@nickvending9688yes I agree it does get you down knowing you have a good gun but it just won't perform how you know it should, you just have it stick with it, I'm sure it will reward you in the end 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you again for the encouragement, much appreciated.
What a journey, Nick. Sorry to see that this has become such a difficult project for you. Really hope that when it’s finished you will have the gun you were hoping for. Having an enthusiast local to me who’s keen to work on my rifles has been an absolute blessing and here in NZ it’s a lot easier to not have to worry about being sub 12ft/lb.
my HW95 is now putting out 13.5 ft/lb (up from 11.5) with the TBT kit fitted. That’s probably the best I can hope for. it’s still as accurate as before but makes a nice “thunk” sound when it fires. A lot nicer than my factory HW77k that makes a “snap” at 16ft/lb
Looking forward to the next instalment of this series!
Cheers
Walter
Thanks Walter, much appreciated. It does seem to be fighting me but it will be worth it in the end.
I wish I could have left it at 12.4, I'm kicking myself for not trying leaving it cocked overnight.
Glad yours is performing well.
I'll send you an email about the spring that I took out of the 95.
kitchen roll is your friend wrapped around a broom handle!
Thank you, I'll try that next time 👍🏻.
An enjoyable video but i feel your pain! Think how good you will feel when its working well .
Thanks Paul, glad you enjoyed the video. The HW95K ranks among my top ten favourite airguns, bringing this one back from the brink will be great once it starts cooperating.
Airguns, not quite as bad as MK2 Escorts but pretty close....
@@nickvending9688 At least you wont have to remove the barrel to fit your new spring. I fitted a tbt kit and removed half a coil and slightly compressed a coil to get 11.3. Feels and sounds lovely to shoot. I had an RS2000 back in the day!
That's true and definitely a relief.
My MK2 is the RS Custom. It has a lot of rust...
Something to watch when I'm home from work 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻Evening Nick
Morning, hope all is well with you.
Hi Nick, you have got another screw missing from your trigger block,it's a small torx screw it's for second stage release.
Another screw, does make me wonder what happened to this poor gun in the past.
@@nickvending9688 torx t8 bit is the one you need
@Rob Mann thanks for that 👍🏻.
Get a welsh willy kit as his springs are pre cut for the specific rifles
I'm looking at my plan c options, if plan b doesn't work.
Lube to try consists of 3 parts STP oil (blue one) to 1 part graphite powder. Use very sparingly.
Thank you, much appreciated 👍🏻
Sorry to say but all these problems were self inflicted. Ill fittng guides and absolutely the wrong lubes. What did you expect? Get a WW kit and Britseals for the rest and you're rockin'. 👍
Well that was kinda the point of the series, does trying to do it on a budget actually work.
To be honest I wished I'd never bought it.
You could try a power washer to give you a touch more preload Nick , mind you I am no tuner but if it works it would save you waiting for a spring .also a washer between the top hat and the piston might allow the spring to twist on firing ?
That's a great idea 👍🏻. I will have a word with the machinist at work, see if they can turn me something out of Delrin.
ment to add a wise man told me top tuner of air rifles as well . don’t put a shit load of grease on the latch rod because it will grab as the gun fires through the guide especially if it’s a good fit
Hmm good point. I might reduce the amount of grease there JIC. The bearing grease grabs less than the usual airgun grease, I've had occasions where the grey grease has become sticky which is why I stopped using it.
Hi Nick, have you got any experience with fitting an OX spring to a rifle, together with the Moly grease they supply? Does it take the rifle over the 12ft/lb mark, if so how much? I am asking because I am thinking of applying for a FAC just for air rifles.
Hello Steve, thanks for your comment.
The HW95 in this video came to me fitted with an OX spring and pumped full of the grease.
Power was 15ftlb if I remember correctly, however the FPS spread was pretty small and cocking effort wasn't too bad.
I didn't check the accuracy.
I'm pretty sure the majority of aftermarket springs will take the power over the limit.
Personally I wouldn't bother with a FAC rated spring air rifle, I'd go for a FAC rated PCP to make the most of the increased range and power by combining it with the inherent stability of a PCP shot from a bipod or from sticks.
Hope that helps, all the best.
Nick
Thanks Nick. Informative and entertaining as always, and the difficulties makes me feel completely normal. :). Cheers
Thanks Nick, glad you enjoyed the video.
Working on guns is a pain for sure.
But even a bad day working on guns is better than a good day in the office.
What a mess cleaning the cylinder and scrtching it at the same time that was in the first few mins im off 😂
Yes that soft brass cloth holder does a huuuge amount of damage to steel. Oh wait, it's way softer.
too much grease, will eventually make its way to the compression chamber and damage the seal.
Did you see how much grease the previous owner had used? Crazy...
I may have used a little bit too much, however I haven't experienced any issues as yet.
The guide & top hat will take your gun over 12flb even with a standard spring, TBT kits are over priced & over rated they will also take your gun over the legal limit with a standard spring plus TBT guides don't fit titan springs. Even the cheap guides on eBay will take your gun over 12ftb. Excellent video by the way. Have taken my air rifles apart many times & it never goes smoothly.
Hello Terry, hope all is well. Glad you enjoyed the video.
My old HW95K was running mid 10ftlb, I was expecting this one to be the same after the rebuild with say 1ftlb extra from the top hat and guide so I was surprised. Wish I'd tried leaving it cocked to see if the power came down instead of wasting a spring by cutting it down too much.
I've certainly heard mixed reviews on the TBT kits, hence why I wanted to try something different.
As a side note my HW98 will be getting a V-Mach kit, it will be interesting to see how that goes.
Good morning mate, I've fitted quite a few TBT guides now & if your standard spring is new it will always take it over the UK limit & you also have to remove the piston sleeve this only relates to HW models. I've never fitted a v.mark kit but they have good reviews.
Thank you for that information, much appreciated. I don't want to remove the piston liner, it is there for a reason.
Maybe I should dig deeper into my pockets and get a V-Mach kit for the HW95 as well, I'll see how plan b goes.
That's what I would do as well, I only know these things because I have made exactly the same mistakes still it's half the fun of the hobby.😊
I would use a piece of dowel in that cylinder with the rag not metal and I would use Isopropyl alcohol to clean it.
My HW35 was taken and put back together again more times than I care to count. Thankfully a little more straight forward than yours.
I upgraded the spring as bent, the action wouldn't cock as too long and made the mistake of cutting too much off?!
Have you found the piston sleeve to have any beneficial reduction in twang and noise? I've not fitted mine yet?
Hello, thank you for your comment much appreciated 👍🏻.
I've put the pieces of the HW95K back in the cupboard while I get the enthusiasm back to work on it.
Cutting the spring too short, depressingly familiar. I think I did too much grinding, got carried away trying to smooth the edges.
I haven't tried changing the piston sleeve, still running with the standard metal one. Can't help feeling that a non-metallic one would cut out more of the twang.
Sorry but way t6o much grease. May well end up soaking into the gun stock. Made that mistake myself years ago. Ended up soaking the stock in acetone to get the grease out.
Yes, I need to cut back on my grease addiction. I'm in the process of finding the sweet spot.
Just started watching your vids. Very informative.
Not sure if I missed it but do you
put grease on the piston seal?
Thank you for watching the channel, much appreciated. I put a (very) small amount of teflon oil on the piston seal.
Piston skirt should have been lubed..... and way to much grease slathered sll over the place!.....try shooting over s chrono BEFORE you put it back in the stock!
The video was badly edited too 😉
Why do you use plain bearing grease and not graphite grease ie Abby lube
Hello, thank you for your comment much appreciated. I have had problems with the graphite grease going sticky. I haven't had the same problem with bearing grease.
Thanks for your reply I have used Abby lube for over 30 years having built hundreds of air rifles I have seen it go dry on under used rifles but I have always considered it time for a service if it was causing a problem , I also notice that you didn't port the rifle you were tuning why not as this is one of the best ways to remove in unwanted recoil and get a more consistent smooth action
It's one of those one bitten twice shy things, I don't want to have a gun come back to me because it suddenly stops performing. It wasn't Abbey grease though, it was some supplied with a "tuning kit" that I had the problem with.
I don't port the guns because I try to keep the videos within most people's skill set.
what happened in end ? did you get it back up to 12ft lb
You'll need to watch the next thrilling installment of the series 😉.
To be honest the rifle needs another rebuild, as the series shows it is possible to do it with budget parts but honestly it's better to buy good quality gear to start with.

hi have you tried brake cleaner for degreasing ?
Hello, thank you for your comment much appreciated. I'd been alternating between meths and brake cleaner. I do prefer brake cleaner, I think I didn't have any when I filmed this video.
Sounds ace lol ( give it a good old scrape ) 😢
The cloth holder is brass, it isn't doing any harm. But yes it does sound pretty awful.
I’m working on my hw 95k, trying a TBT kit with a short stroke. I’ll let you know how it pans out 🤞
I'll be interested to find out.
Overuse of grease….. way too much. We live and learn
And there was me going to open it back up and put a bit more grease in.
Just kidding 😉.
It will be rebuilt again in the not too distant, but sadly may well then be sold along with a lot of the other kit 😭.
So funny, I'm watching and wanting say do this or do that, but you can't hear me, lol. We know that once you go in and out of in your rifle many times, it gets much easier 🙂👍.
I've got stripping her down to a few minutes now. Fitting the barrel is a pain but I've got a method for that.
@@nickvending9688 I have had to put it in a compressor to get the barrel back on.
I use one of my woodwork clamps, a rather long one. It is quite a fiddle isn't it.
@@nickvending9688 bik biro pen top -its tapered, black plastic and slides the lubricated shims in easy with no scrathing
@Rob Mann great tip thanks for that 👍🏻
Hi Nick yes there should be a screw there
Hello Luis, hope you are well. I couldn't work out why the screw was missing. The trigger is transformed now.
My Gunsmith instructed me to work on my own Springers because he knew I'd be able to. I find it therapeutic too and my TX200 is a champ! I've fitted a new set of guides and a short stroke extension, new piston bearings and comp tube seals. I use the TX and HW98 for HFT so they have to be right. A chronograph is also essential.
@Nick Vending i had similar issues couple of weeks ago when i bought a hw57 and the trigger was really bad, after i checking it i found the screw was missing too. This is a brand new gun! I wonder if they are falling out or the factory are forgetting to put them in the gun 🤔
It could be a factory issue, they are held under spring tension so I don't think they would fall out. I am now thinking that could be why the trigger in my HW99S was so bad.
@Nick Vending that's a very strong possibility Nick. If I get another one I will be asking the store to check it before I pay 😁
Before you put the gun back together you should have measured the new internal parts against the old ones!
I did measure the piston seal off camera. Spring guide was more a visual check granted. I check springs more by how much preload, as I'm sure you saw from an earlier episode the spring in the rifle was non-standard and over powered so I couldn't use it for a guide.
How many new swear words did you come up with Nick?🤬🤬🤬🤯🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
A fair few for sure 😉.
ptfe spray lube
@@nickvending9688
No no no no no no No!!!! Way to much grease and not that grease neather!!!!
You are not the first person to make that comment.
I agree that the conventional wisdom is to use a different type of grease, the "airgun greases" (for want of a better description) I've tried have all turned sticky after a month or so, power and performance dropped right off. Somehow the bearing grease I use just works. Granted I probably put a bit much in, but the gun is dry compared to how my HW98 came from the factory (and remains the same to this day), Weihrauch having used a similar type of grease, and inspired me to seek alternative lubricants to try.
Just one of those things really, making life interesting.
why do we do it to ourselves? 🫣
I know, sometimes it goes great (Stoeger), other times the gun fights a bit too much.
