Superb! Still got my copy of 'Beat That' on vinyl, Frustration, My Life's a Jigsaw' and of course 'Millions Like Us' on 7 inch. When they split, they formed a band called 'The Rage'. About 82 to 84 there used to be a Mod AllDayer on a Saturday in Manchester. First at a club called 'Cloud Nine' then moved to 'Pips'. Saw 'The Rage' play there. Right at the front wizzin my tits off, 2 young to get ale, tryin very hard 2 be cool, F.P shirt and jumper, shades, drippin sweat playing imaginary maracas.
Honestly you're wrong theface79 - went to see Purple Hearts at a secret warm up gig last Sunday - put Purple Hearts 2009 Wattsie in the search - I did 6 vids - none of them are fat and it certainly wassn't dull.
Aww sweet.Loved this track and great footage.Purple Hearts have reformed as a new band RT4 with two original members and will be performing at Kings Cross on the 28th July at The Water rats in case anyone is interested. Its a charity show for cancer research and a few mod faces will be there....
possibly the best mod band !! you say you met jeff at a rage gig? is that the rage that were based in east london ? played support to them at the 100 club bout 84 ish?
I wasn't in any band myself, I worked in the Carnaby Cavern in late 83' early 84' and Derwent had his suits made by us and would come in every saturday, a really nice bloke.
The Bridge House was mad. Remember the bouncy floor, the scooters and the "banter" with the local skinheads. Place used to empty in seconds when there was a bundle outside.
Happiness would be hire A small club twice a month, couple of DJ's plenty of classics and 60s Speed Blues, some Ska, plenty of good revival floor fillers. Live bands...some old, some new. Mod All Nighters. I NEED THIS. I'm 40 and there are Millions Like Us. Give me something to look forward to. 'Lil Red' you're organised...you're a DJ... not to mention a 'Face'. Make it happen for me and the rest of us.
nice one for sharin JohnBoy, I was watchin the opening of Quadrophenia the musical on ITV news - 4kn ell mate! There are STILL millions like us!! :) Lee Liverpool Mods
ALL OF THE NEW MODS AND MOD BANDS CAME OUT AFTER THE WHO QUADROPHENIA FILM WAS RELEASED IN DECEMBER OF 1979! AND THE SUCCESS OF THE JAM AND ALL MOD CONS ALBUM AS WELL! CHEERS!
@Dunton Scooters I have a feeling The Stone Roses ( to be ) were listening in to the Beat That L P - or / and your later stuff - I can hear you in their sound which would and I'm Sure is as cool as it gets - personally I believe there was Nobody who came close to The Purple Hearts way back in those Ĝreat Days - Nice One Jeff .
must have been the same rage, derwent was lead singer, buddy ascot drums, just jeff and stevie b on guitar, their first single was looking for you.which band were you in?
Envy you for having seen them there - i wouldn´t go to any of their shows now, though. Secret Affair weren´t as sharp but to see them fat und dull in recent videos is enough to stop anyone going to see the Hearts - it would just be disappointing. The Purple Hearts had one good year in my opinion; they should leave at that and their records.
@ackee123 Move to colchester, essex, UK. Once a month theirs a retro night at Roberts Bar with a well known rally DJ. It's like being at a rally every month, everyone dressed either mod or skin. Have regular mod/ska bands too.
The Chords were crap in comparison to The Purple Hearts, this band was phenomenal, Long Tall Shorty were good as well. Ah the Marquee in Wardour Street and all these bands - such good times and it wasn't all too derivitive - there was the punk cross over aspect to it. I loved it Mods, mods, mods, mods, mods! and all that.
@tom69mod my bruv went to watch them in Rossetta Bar in Belfast tonight in same thing, I bought him new pair of Dr Martin brogues for his birthday to wear ( there are cutting the feet off him ha ha ha)
There's another version that's even better than this on one of those Mod compilations, it's got a brillant slow build up at the start and there's a bit in the middle with the guitarist (Gary Sparke)? playing an extended solo bit where h'es playing power chords. It's similar to this but I think it's a studio recording rather than live but it's still got a rawness about it.
Difficult to compare Secret Affair with the Hearts & Chords, Page/Cairns were a little more soulful, going to see them in May so I'll post you some thoughts
great mod band , saw them at peterborough wirrina around 86 . met jeff at a rage gig..
Great bands came out of the 79 MOD revival alongside the great named Purple Hearts like The Chords Secret Affair The Circles Speedball etc
the jam were a new wave band who dressed in a mod style. purple hearts where the best band to come out of the 79 scene .
This song has no business being this catchy or timeless. It’s f*cking perfect.
I sucks getting old and having to become responsible. I will always cherish my wild and insane youth.

I still have this on 7" picture sleeve.
Great Great Tune!!!
I used to but no idea what happened to it.
See them play the Electric Stadium in Chadwell Heath
Terrific!
Especially I've Been Away - have a look at Bobs' energy - the man's hardly aged.
One of the Millions right here!
Im on the guest list for friday night ... yup cant wait
Saw them on Saturday in Sheffield and they sounded great. Bob Manton doesn't look a day older than he does on here either!

Derwent wasn't in the hearts
Bob dropped his trousers
top tune
I remember the gigs at The Bridge House, Canning Town. The dance floor used to bounce up and down, (or was it me).
We Are The Mods!
The Bridge House was mad. Remember the bouncy floor, the scooters and the "banter" with the local skinheads. Place used to empty in seconds when there was a bundle outside.
The Purple Hearts need to come to Los Angeles!!!!
Hi,
All you need to do is arrange some gigs and we will fly over.....Jeff (just) Purple Hearts
Is that Jake Burns from Stiff Little Fingers at the very end?

Bahoo! Great times, what's gone wrong?!
ALL OF THE NEW MODS AND MOD BANDS CAME OUT AFTER THE WHO QUADROPHENIA FILM WAS RELEASED IN DECEMBER OF 1979! AND THE SUCCESS OF THE JAM AND ALL MOD CONS ALBUM AS WELL! CHEERS!
Hi Mate,
Sorry but you have your facts wrong, we (the purple hearts ) formed about a year before quadrophenia was released . jeff(just)

This band are the dogs!!!
Reminds me of The Who alot... especially their early stuff.
Great !!

must have been the same rage, derwent was lead singer, buddy ascot drums, just jeff and stevie b on guitar, their first single was looking for you.which band were you in?
Saved me from being a teddy boy.
Flipping heck! They don't half sound like The Who! Good stuff!
I love Manny
Its from the film 'Rough cut & ready dubbed'
What a great band, by way, to the bloke with a stupid long name, the Chords were fantastic!!!!
From "Rough Cut & Ready Dubbed" right? Shit haven't seen this since the 80's...wow. Damn I'm old.
Did Jeff say they “dropped some acid this morning”?
Though he actually has Been Away in the meantime - but i certainly will have a look.
Envy you for having seen them there - i wouldn´t go to any of their shows now, though. Hell, who is higher on amph: the audience or the band; would love to have been there
Dig The New Breed & What They Say 1979 is 1964 & a Vespa is a Vespa but a Lambretta is a SCOOTER
Why is the film so fast? They sound like cartoons.
@tom69mod my bruv went to watch them in Rossetta Bar in Belfast tonight in same thing, I bought him new pair of Dr Martin brogues for his birthday to wear ( there are cutting the feet off him ha ha ha)

Glory Boy get together? What planet are you on?
alright - sounds promising
Difficult to compare Secret Affair with the Hearts & Chords, Page/Cairns were a little more soulful, going to see them in May so I'll post you some thoughts
Could someone tell me where this is taken from ?
This blows away the one on the record.
Film Rough Cut and Ready Dubbed.
I agree, I thought the Chords were great too. Secret Affair don't stand up quite so well when you hear them today.
This is a gem!
@SonicSurf3r ...while you wern't pushing it
the chorus is pretty ripped off by a 60's tune calles "Little One" by the Washington DC's.
ace tune by the way!
I blame Spandau Ballet - everything was great til they came along
exploited?what a joke,joke following as well
Oops...It sucks..
