    This is a quick review of the Faber-Castell 9000 graphite drawing pencils. I also mention the Staedtler Mars Lumograph 100 drawing pencils and make some comparison between the two pencil sets.

    I love the staedtler mars lumographs. Just opening the tin and looking at them lets you know you have quality. The feel of them in the hand especially. Their grades stamped on every side.

    Yes I agree, yesterday I bought some of these by units and the lumograph 8b is the best pencil I ever used. I also love a caran d'ache 3b I have, is soo smooth but ridiculously expensive. The Faber 9000 I got was a 5b and what I liked was that is easier to get a very sharp point for precision lines. Then I got a lumograph Black 6b which has a different feel with lots of carbon in the mix great for more expressive artwork but not good for precision. The lumograph has a beautiful balance between smoothness and sharpness, and gets really dark. If I would have to be left with just one pencil would be hands down the lumograph 8b because you have all the range from light grey to almost black in one tool. They are priced normally not like caran d'ache ( I would have to try out the 9b they have but I can't imagine such a big difference to justify the price). Great video. Cheers to all my fellow artists 👍🥂👌

Sometimes I just prefer to draw with staedtler cause it feels more like a pencil if that makes sense. I love both and some days I prefer one or the other.

    It is interesting how varied our opinions can be. I don't hate the Lumograph 100 pencils, they just don't fit my drawing style as well as some other pencils. If I had to choose just one set of brand name pencils, it would be General's. I use H pencils a good deal most than most of the artists I know. Maybe a couple use them as much, or more. I love the almost invisible shading I get with a high H pencil, I love how I can soften the glare white of some paper without it being noticeable, and I love how I can use such a pencil as a base coat that lets me control the shading of a soft pencil without the need to use excess pressure. There are times when shadows aren't black at all. Shadow come in all sorts of tones when the light passes through something that is also opaque, or when the light bounces around enough before reach the object you're drawing, etc.
    It's just the way I see, the way I draw, but I love using a high H pencil for some types of shading, or even for softening the edges of dark shadows when I see this happening. For years, many years, I never went above 5H, and often not harder than 3H, but now I frequently use a 7H, and sometimes even the 9H.
    Anyway, General's go from 9H to 9XXB, and while I seldom go above 6B, when I do go higher with General's, I don't seem to get nearly as much shine as I do from other brands. Ninety percent of the time, I stay at 3H to 6B. Sometimes an H, a 2B, and a 4B is all I need. But I love have the wide range available.
    But I don't have to pick one brand, and my favorite set of pencils is a mix of several brands.
    This said, I have two sets of extremely cheap Chinese pencils that I love. I like them every bit as much as any of the big brands I own. A Chinese friend handed me one to write something down, and I was stunned by how smooth it was, and by the tone. It was a 2B, and he told me it was just a standard pencil used for a number of things at Uni, and in the government. At the time, it cost just under a nickel. Then I tried his art pencils, also an extremely cheap Chinese brand, and I loved them. I couldn't wait to get home and tell my artist friends. That's when I learned several of them already knew, and had been using them for quite a whil. But they were afraid to tell anyone because they feared trolls, and even feared the possibility of losing commissions.
    I'm old, so I don't care. I love my Chinese pencils.

    I was in a store the other day and wanted to by the farber version for the exact same reasons that you showed: the sheen being present in the darker B values and the fact that they do not go as dark as the staedler. They only had the Staedler so I ended up buying only an HB, and told the person in the store that I did not want the darkness of the staedler. But I had to look it up, it made me unsure if I really knew the "tools" and preference of my art, so thanks for this review, I feel a little redeemed.

    • @RixCanDoit
      @RixCanDoit  Před 3 lety +1

      Nobody likes that 'sheen' you get with dark graphite. But on the flip side, if you are into realism as I am, you NEED to go dark. So what can you do? With graphite, you add layers lightly to achieve the darkest tones it can provide. But even better, use a hybrid pencil like the Staedtler Blacks or General's 9xxb pencil. What I also like to do is use charcoal in my graphite drawings for the really dark areas. Another thing you can do is to spray a workable fixative on it after you're done and take off much of the sheen. Also, putting the drawing under glass works well, like when framing. Thanks for commenting!

    • @thunbergmartin
      @thunbergmartin Před 3 lety +1

      @@RixCanDoit Oh man, my brain must not have been working properly while writing my previous comment, I ment to write that I wanted the farber for the opposite reason: I really like the sheen, and either enhance this glossiness by going over with a harder H pen creating textures, or erase streaks of it with the smudging of a dirty eraser. The steeper incline in darkness and loss of sheen in the staedler makes my drawings look "disparate" (as if i have used different mediums in the same drawing, if that makes sense) For the longest of times I also tried to find a fixative that would not remove the sheen, eventually I gave up. Anyways, thanks for your comment and the tips regardless, Its truly a fascinating medium, the depth of techniques and ridiculously ease-of-use. It inspired me to watch and read your comment, take care! / Martin

      @RixCanDoit  Před 3 lety +1

I was very surprised when she told that real artist will never use anything but pencils when drawing, no blending stumps, no paper, nothing, only pencil and correct layers of grafite that's it. +RixCanDoit I use the grafwoods - I started with derwent graphic and then went straight to grafwood (my shop doesn't do the staedtler range)... but the difference between grafwood and derwent is huge - the grafwoods are so so smooth - I am British by the way; derwent products are absolutely everywhere here, but by comparison the derwents feel rough and grainy - coarse bits of clay appear periodically (which scratch the paper) extremely annoying - the grafwood is like butter! like cream! like silk!!

As for their drawing pencil kit, the black paint with orange end stripe is nice, but never find myself reaching to use them. Not my favorites either.
      I appreciate your mentioning the grafwoods. I would think they would have to be exceptional, considering they want an arm and a leg for them! I like cream, and butter, and wear silk ties! So maybe I should treat myself on these. Thanks!

I have an 8Bk for fading from the 8B to the Pierre Noire H, and it's really nice. It does act differently to graphite and charcoal if pressed in hard, so that's something to watch out for.
      The value and intensity shift between the 6B and 8B in the video is similar to the value and intensity shift between my 8B and 8Bk, which is where my thoughts on the range switch come from.

      +Ajtayam Tayam Go with what you like! You have to try them to know. And then there is what you want to do with them, write or draw (or both). For drawing, I happen to like the Lumograph Mars 100 set over the Faber Castell.

    OMG I need to go to end of all videos about "best graphite pencil " to get a conclusion. Too much talking in slo-mo . Why not prepare a sheet of paper with examples beforehand? Seems watching you slowly draw examples is frustrated and tedious to watch. I get it you can't just say "brand x" is the best but either way .... Why talk so much?

    • @RixCanDoit
      @RixCanDoit  Před rokem +1

      I don't prepare the examples ahead of time because I want viewers to see HOW I came to the conclusion. Leave that part out and I won't get comments like "why talk so much" but rather "you didn't do this...or that...etc." Can't please everyone. But what everyone like yourself CAN DO because this is video is to just fast-forward or skip around. That's easy enough. Then EVERYONE can have their cake and eat it too.
