  • Hi everyone! This is the fifth video in my Iceland & Greenland series.
    In this vlog, I explore the colourful architecture of Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. I will focus on residential buildings and areas in the city.
    In particular, I will talk about the traditional use of colour and what the colours meant in the past, as well as take you on a stroll through various neighbourhoods, the city centre and the Colonial Harbour area. I also learn about the demolition plans for some of the apartment buildings in the centre.
    Join me on this fascinating journey through Nuuk! Let's go explore!
    Chapters:

    • @willieexplore
      @willieexplore  Před 2 lety +2

      100% worth a visit! But "when" is a good question and one I try to answer in one of my upcoming vlogs. In my view it partly depends on where you are in your travelling journey.
      It was my 65th country, but if it was going to be, say, my 8th I would probably not go, given how expensive it is to get to - with budget airlines, you could easily do a few trips to other parts of the world instead for the same cost and leave Greenland for a later stage. But that is my personal view :)

    Una mezcla de arquitectura moderna internacional en sus edificios comerciales y bloques de edificios y arquitectura escandinava en las viviendas particulares. Es muy llamativo el colorido de estas edificaciones . Si bien carece de vegetación la ciudad, el relieve del suelo ayuda mucho a que el paisaje sea dinámico.

    I like how you are allowed to choose the colour of your house! I wonder if the people who have the houses are wealthier than those in the apartments...or if that type of "class" system (for want of a better phrase) doesn't exist in Greenland? Always great to see your interactions with the local people, Willie.

    • @willieexplore
      @willieexplore  Před rokem +1

      Definitely some economic inequality in Nuuk, Sheila. And yes, the architecture tells a story in that regard. I’ve read afterwards that those big residential buildings (called “Bloks”) were built in the 1960s by the Danish in an attempt to transform Greenlandic infrastructure under their ‘Folketinget’ programme. The aim was to lure people away from coastal settlements to the cities. However, the Bloks with their narrow doorways and European style storage spaces were ultimately not conducive for Inuit lifestyle - for example, the Inuit fishermen struggled to store their fishing gear and winter clothing in those narrow spaces. I was actually wondering where the people whose residences are being demolished are going to be housed in the meantime...

    • @sheilam4525
      @sheilam4525 Před rokem

      @@willieexploreyes, I thought so. The "Bloks" look more modern so surprised to hear they are over 60 years old. They have been pretty well maintained. You would think they would have considered the lifestyle of the residents when designing them especially if they wanted more city dwelling! Hopefully they have a plan for those that will be displaced

    I see a lot of wood construction. Where does it come from when there are so few trees in Greenland? Are there earthquakes in Western Greenland? How widespread is the use of English? Is there now ont he groudn year round?

      We got woods from Denmark, Norway and some from Canada. There are no earthquakes in whole Greenland, but just slightly surprises here and there, a little shake, but they're extremely rare and away from cities. The usage of English is, we learn from 6th grade in primary schools, so around 60% of people do know how to read and write in English, but we don't speak English much. The snow do melt in cities, but we do always get snow around the coast and in cities in winter, so still no nothing snow on winters, but the south Greenland have less snow than north.

      @@willieexplore No problem. I do like to watch any from my country. Even though I live here in Greenland, I like to see the reactions and the stories, they tell in videos. I live in Maniitsoq, the next town north from Nuuk. As local, I don't go out to nature much as I used to when I was a child, so it made me proud, when someone appreciate the fresh air and nature.
