1965 Chevrolet Corvair Monza: Handed Down And Modified

  • This week we are outside of downtown Los Angeles in the hills of Thousand Oaks, CA to spend some time with Christopher Mejia and his favorite Chevrolet Corvair Monza out of a collection that’s 25-strong. Owned since new by his grandfather until the day he died in 1995, this car was passed down, crashed, rebuilt, crashed again, and then resto-modded into this beautiful black blade by the same grandkid it used to bring to kindergarten in the morning. The air-cooled flat-six in back made the Corvair a unique piece of American automotive history, and by adding push-rod air-suspension among other custom touches to the car that’s never left the family, Christopher’s Corvair goes a step further.

    Love this man's passion. Years ago I worked on a 64 for a customer. Restored the fuel system, valve adjustment, fixed brakes and did a tune up. Being a VW gal, the valve adjustment was interesting. I wish the steering boxes had a quicker ratio. I felt like I was steering the SS Minnow.
    By the way, when I was born in 1970 in LA at General Hospital, my dad picked up my mom and I to go home in one of his Corvairs. Going down San Fernando Road he was doing 100 and my mom said to my dad: "Please slow down, we have the baby" to which he replied "that's ok, let her get used to going fast". 30 years later I opened my 1st VW repair shop, and wrenched for 20 years.

      Darius Andrey the old trick was to turn the transaxle around, spin it upside down and mount a V8 to it, making it a mid engine monster. The first one I saw had a 283 in it, but it was so light, and the 283 was a high revving, strong engine that the little thing screamed. There was another one owned by a senior in HS when I was a freshman, that put a iv block up front with a conventional drivetrain layout. He ran a 6-71 blower on it and it was a great looking car, but I’d rather have one with the mid engine set up. The swing arm suspension sucked, but when the changed to IRS it was amazing. I want one. Oh, and the four speed transmission? It was a Muncie M22 rock crusher, super durable.

    Nothing beats a good father/son (or father/daughter, grandfather/grandson, etc) car story. I'm not necessarily a fan of American cars but I love a great car story no matter the marque or model. And I can completely understand where Christian is coming from because I have the same story with my grandfather. In fact our stories are similar in a sense because my story also includes a air-cooled flat six from the 1960's (although mine is from a German variety.)
    Not often a car becomes (in)famous for being "unsafe at any speed" but it seems like more and more young Corvair enthusiasts are proving Mr. Nader wrong by improving what is IMHO one of the most unique designs on 60's American cars. Also it's not often that a person can have a coupe, sedan, wagon, pickup and van version of his favorite car like you could have with the Corvair. Thanks Petrolicious for telling yet another great car story.

    • @marcryvon
      @marcryvon Před 6 lety +4

      Nader was kinda right but for the first generation cars due to the rear swing axle suspension. 386 and 911Porsches had the similar problem until recently - 15/25 years ago. They were called Widow Makers.
      Also to note, American drivers did'nt know how to drive a light rear engined car.

    The Corvair was GMs response to the VW Beetle sales. They reverse engineered the air cooled Beetle, went to 6 cylinders for the US market. The original suspension was as dangerous as Nader said, but GM fixed it. Few people today realize GM once had an air cooled boxer six. The most interesting motor they ever built.

    • @tomhughes6486
      @tomhughes6486 Před 6 lety +21

      The suspension under the Early Models (1960-1964) was much like that of the Porsches and VWs of the day. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ran a number of tests in 1971 and concluded, "The handling and stability performance of the 1960-63 Corvair does not result in an abnormal potential for loss of control or rollover, and it is at least as good as the performance of some contemporary vehicles both foreign and domestic." www.corvaircorsa.com/handling01.html

    • @SBF96
      @SBF96 Před 6 lety +16

      Actually the early model suspension wasn’t as dangerous as Nader said, it was debunked by the NHTSA in 1972 that proved that it wasn’t any more prone to rolling over than any of its contemporaries from the same model years.

    BEST HAND DOWN EVER ! Hey Christian and Petrolicious - I am an old guy from Hermosa/Redondo area and got way into the whole Corvair thing as a kid in the 70s. Trying to pass this legacy on in the family to my Grand kids today. My older cousin had a creamy yellow 66 Monza 140hp with a 4 speed, it was lowered just a little; not a low rider per se but with an air dam on it, had old school chrome Cragars all around with "Polyglas GTs" and a really fine tuned exhaust -on the original four one barrels
    - SUPER BAD little Car - like a Can Am -He tricked out and kicked some butt with the "Poor Man's Porsche" in the Downey area.
    When it came time for me to drive (1971) He was heading off to Dental school so He set me up with that same little 66 Monza down in the South Bay area - I bought that car from him with less than 60,000 miles for $600 dollars! Love Corvairs! With the tuned exhaust, four one barrels & famous CA "Smog pump" she "Crackled" when you'd downshift or coast" - people knew it was Me coming with Rosie for miles!
    MY WONDERFUL COUSIN GARY was killed BY A DRUNK DRIVER in 1976 on his BiCYCLE down in Belmont Shore (Long Beach) by a DRUNK DRIVER out on a Sunday cruise at the beach. But CRACKLING ROSIE - QUEEN OF HERMOSA LIVES - COOLEST CARS EVER!

    Wow! My second car (in 1968) was a box stock '63 Monza convertible with automatic transmission. A hand-me-down from my mom. I converted it to four speed by stripping a junked Corvair of it's transmission, shifter linkage, pedals, the whole deal. I got a 140hp four carb engine from an abandoned vehicle on a back street in Philly and a rear from a Greenbriar van (3.90 gear ratio if I remember correctly) from a junk yard in South Philly. Rebuilt the engine and put it all together. There were almost no aftermarket parts then so you had to make do. It would do 90mph in third, but when you shifted to forth, the fan-belt would fly off every time. There were no spring-loaded idler pulleys in those days.
    I "tucked a rear wheel" a few times, but the worst thing that happened was a re-tread came off of the carcass once. Great fun, very unique and even then people couldn't understand what the hell I was doing. Loved your video, loved it! You get a BIG like from me and a subscription!

      Helps to remember the Karmann Ghia styling was originally done for a Chrysler project that was canned, then Ghia downscaled it & sold it to VW. With all the retro Beetles, I'm surprised VW hasn't done a retro KG, which would be a huge sales success & enable them to capitalize on the Boxster running gear w/o cannibalizing the sales of that model to any extent...

    In college in the early 1970's, I was so fortunate to receive a 1965 Corvair coupe from my aunt & uncle. It unfortunately had a leaky cowl that led to brake-line rust-through (fortunately at very low speed), I loved that vehicle and was heartbroken when it threw the fan belt on the local Interstate; it was still operable after that but never ran the same.

"Road and Track" named the early independant suspension ones "best handling American production car".......mine had 14' (stock)corvette rims and goodyear radials .... I put a EMPI shifter and exhaust on it (stock 110hp eng.) and set up the suspension for road racing (EMPI specs)..... wasn't very fast in a straight line but, I was faster than anything on the street in the twisty parts ............ ;-p

My second Vair was a 64 monza 4 spd I bought for 20 bucks with a bad motor . I got a good motor in pieces for 70 bucks . Put it together and continued the fun . I could go for another .

    Awesome collection. My first car was a 67 Corvair Monza. I took it apart, never drove it and sold it 30 years later. My second car (bought a few weeks after the first) was a 65 Corsa Turbo which I put a seriously built engine in from the Weber 45DCOE bolted to a modified early model turbo all the way down. My dad and Doug Roe used to race together, they got me started in cars. All in all I've owned 1 of every model ever made. Sadly I sold the whole collection a few years back. Now that the custom private aircraft people have taken a shine to the engines, they are really getting high tech. I've seen Covair engine/transaxles down to 181 pounds, nearly 700 hp (not counting the special fuel dragster engines), up to 3.4 liters, redlines well over the 11K mark, roller cams, distributerless ignitions and multiport fuel injection. There's even a few 5 speed transmisions out there.
    Glad to see they younger generation keeping the car alive. Maybe some day I'll be knocking on one of your doors looking to get another one.
    Side note: both my dad and Doug Roe (google "Roe racer") raced early models. Neither ever lost to a late model or a Mustang and neither did my '65.

    Im surprised there was no mention that the Corvair was also the first turbocharged production car and came with water/meth injection. GM really broke the mold with this car, its a shame that a smear campaign ruined its reputation.

    • @CORVAIRWILD
      @CORVAIRWILD Před 6 lety +2

      Don't Tread On Me the Olds Jetfire was introduced just before the Corvair Spyder turbo. The Corvair did NOT have injection of any kind, the compression was lowered, and the carb was a tiny Carter YH, from the 6 cylinder Corvette-1953-4, and Hudson Twin H.

    • @eaglefat9398
      @eaglefat9398 Před 6 lety +1

      its debatable which came first i tend to agree with you but many say the Corvair Spyder turbo beat it to market. I did just assume on the water/meth because the jetfire did have it so it was a reasonable assumption. Both were mold breaking engines a turbo air cooled flat 6 and a all aluminum high compression turbo 3.5L v8 with factory water/meth in 1962ish not to mention the fuel injection on the Corvettes and Bonneville's and chevy's 4.6L v8 with a 7,200rpm redline in the mid 50's, that was really GM's peek

    • @CORVAIRWILD
      @CORVAIRWILD Před 6 lety +1

      Don't Tread On Me the olds engine was a failure because people forgot to put methanol fluid in, I guess they call it jet fuel or something. The Corvair turbo was lame, I have a 62 Spyder with a 64 engine with a high-performance turbo and a giant Rochester Quadrajet. Right now it's running like crap, but if you search corvairwild turbo boost you'll see me cruising around with Mr mugs my dog in the back seat making whistling boost with no Muffler. A fun car, and I have several, and I will forever. The 4.1 engine can still be found in the Range Rovers and such, Olds and Buick got fed up with it pretty quickly enough, it went across the pond

    • @eaglefat9398
      @eaglefat9398 Před 6 lety +1

      they did try to buy it back but Rover wasn't about to sell it seeing how it had a great rep. If only they didn't try to make it high compression it would have been less of a burden, i think if it had a few more years to mature they would have worked out the kinks. Hell the original small block chevy didn't even have a oil filter but they stuck with it and improved it. A lot of people dislike the Qjet but if you take the time to set it up right it can make great power and be far better on the street, i"d go as far to say its one of the most advanced carbs ever made. i had a 75 lemans with a 455olds from a delta 88 it was the high out put version, added a Qjet off a 500caddy, a aluminum intake/velocity stack, "half"cam and open headers (after a exhaust pop blew one of the glass packs right off it! ) nobody would get in the car a second time ;)

    • @datsuntoyy
      @datsuntoyy Před 5 lety +1

      Quadrajet is too big. Best set up is a Weber DCOE with small chokes. 40 with 28's I had a 65 running Doug Roe's modified early turbo (first #8, Doug was a good friend of my dads) and it pumped boost like no tomorrow. Enough to shatter a differential. If anything, cut back to a Holley 350 2 bbl or find a Stromberg. I was running ported 110 heads, isky 270 cam, and 9:1 compression. Boost pegged the factory gauge (accuracy??).
