@@anshtripathi7035 he replaced both, we used to play a double pivot with both of them under Mourinho, both had defensive duties with khedira being the one tasked with breaking up play and cleaning up while Alonso was a Deep Lying Playmaker. We ditched that under Ancelloti for a 4 3 3 formation with Di Maria, Modric and Alonso, with Alonso now being the only holding midfielder(being a deep lying playmaker and a defensive midfielder) when Alonso left we didn’t have a DM and ended up playing players out of position there like Modric and Isco. When Casemiro came back he became our new DM but lacked the ball playing/creative genius of a Alonso(even though Casemiro is underrated slightly in that aspect) Kroos didn’t take the role of anyone, he replaced Di Maria but was a different profile of player entirely(being an actual central midfielder)
@@Chris24_ exactly.Xabi Alonso was a mix of Kroos+Casemiro.Imo better long ball player than kroos maybe but shy of regarding defensive strenght of casemiro.

Favorite player for me in the last 6-7 years.. does his job without any sort of fanfare,extremely down to earth,little to no media attention other than his work on football pitch or charity,never was in it for the money in fact literally has worn the same football for 6 years so much that adidas has to make a few fresh pair for him and lastly to further cement his humble nature literally clean his own boots after a game or training session.

he wasnt a free transfer. 1 year of contract was left with bayern. you payed for him. however it was very cheap indeed. upon agreeing to let xabi alonso join bayern nevertheless.
