  • Punnathur Kotta Elephant Camp maintained by Guruvayur Devaswom Board, near Guruvayur templel, also known as Anakkotta (Aana Kotta) or Elephant Kotta. This is part of Thrissur Tourism and Kerala Tourism.
Punnathurkotta is a fort and former palace located in Kottapadi, about 2 km from the Guruvayoor Sree Krishna Temple, in Thrissur District of Kerala State in South India.
Punnathurkotta was once the palace of a local ruler, but the palace grounds are now used to house the elephants belonging to the Guruvayoor temple, and has been renamed Anakkotta (meaning "Elephant Fort"). There were 86 elephants housed in the Elephant Kotta, but currently there are about 59 elephants. The elephants are ritual offerings made by the devotees of Lord Guruvayurappa.
Described as a 'Palace for Elephants,' this facility is also used to train the elephants to serve Lord Krishna as well as to participate in many festivals that occur throughout the year. The oldest elephant is around 82 years of age and is called 'Ramachandran'. The rituals of Gajapooja (Worshipping Elephants) and Anayoottu (Feeding Elephants) are observed here, as an offering to Lord Ganesha. The legendary elephant "Guruvayur Keshavan" was housed here.
The compound also has a naalu kettu, a traditional rectangular home with a central courtyard, which belonged to the Punnathur Raja. It is poorly maintained and presently houses a training school for Papans (Mahout).
This complex also contains a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Bhagavathy. Some scenes in the famous Malayalam movie "Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha" (starring Mammooty) were filmed at this location. The visiting hours are 9.00 AM to 5.00 PM.
The Elephant Camp is located in Punnathur Kotta, at a distance of 3 km from the Guruvayur Temple. This Elephant Camp houses 58 elephants in 11.5 acres of land and is home to the largest number of captive elephants. During the month July elephants are given special ayurvedic treatment and food.

They are all suffering so much. They are all chained. They all have less than 3 feet to move. This should not be celebrated. The Government should outlaw these types of parks. This is almost as bad as the Chinese parks.

This is definitely not a happy sight, the elephants are stressed and are swaying their heads sideways and one of the elephants can be seen pulling the chain. While we worship the very form of elephant in the form of Ganesha, we enslave the living creatures. Very sad state of affairs, people shouldn't encourage such places by visiting them.

@@invertedaura1986 truth is bitter, and culture is discriminatory. Looking at the tradition of temples even Churches in Kerala have started buying elephants because it is a source of money. Don't mean to be rude correcting you, but Guruvayoorappan is not an avatar of Krishna, but a standalone folk avatar of guru and vayu. So the elephants aren't being trained to serve lord Krishna (1:17), they are all wards of the great Keshavan, an elephant famously known to have been Guruvayoor's own superstar in his own right. His tusks are displayed in the Guruvayoor museum. Otherwise, great video my man.

You have taken the video well. However, it is sad to see elephants chained up like this. Elephants belong in the wild. It is cruel and barbaric to keep them chained up all day just to entertain people. SET THEM FREE. If you truly worship elephants, let them live out the rest of their lives in an elephant sanctuary. No god needs this. It's only man's greed that makes him do this.
