  • About ten years ago, I received a message from a buddy of mine (who happens to own Frankie's Tiki Room in Las Vegas). He asked if it would be okay to use one of my band's song titles for a cocktail to be sold at the bar. Name a tiki drink after a phrase that I came up with?? I enthusiastically said, 'Yes!'
    On the menu it even refers to a 'Spike of rums' and 'a favorite of The Hula Girls.' What an honor.
    That cocktail is the Hulabilly Honey! Its a coconut/ mango/ orange concoction that seems fairly harmless in how much rum you can taste, but it'll get ya!
    Joining me on the show are a group of deejays from the vintage swing and rocking' scene in Southern California. They were a bunch of fun to have on the show.
    I hope you dig this four person cocktail episode. We're breaking records here, folks!
    To make the the drink in the video:
    --------------------------------------
    1oz orange juice
    3oz mango nectar
    1oz Coco Lopez
    ½ oz falernum
    ½ oz honey syrup
    2 dashes cherry bitters
    1 oz Mt Gay Eclipse rum
    ½ oz Lemon Hart 151-proof rum
    --------------------------------------
    Build over ice in a 15-ounce squall glass, then pour into cocktail shaker. Shake well, then re-pour into cocktail shaker.
    Garnish with orange wheel and two cherries.

    Frankie's is an amazing place. Between my 1st and 2nd visit a year had passed. On the 2nd visit the bartender not only remembered my name but my job (at that time). My local dive bar doesn't even know my name and I am there 2-3 times a week.

    Had to buy the cherry bitters ( and honestly can't see any other use for them) but good to have another cocktail use for the gallons of mango nectar I buy from Costco.

    That was a lot of fun. Sad to see my brother, Sailor Mike's mental deterioration though. We believe it's the rum. Also Mike and I have been to the The Purple Orchid Tiki Lounge in El Segundo a number of times after a beach bike ride. Great drinks including a seasonal Watermelon Mai Tai.

    That looks like a good one. I might try that. I have most of that stuff. No cherry bitters. Some old Bacardi 151 in a Ron Matusalem 151 bottle. Un-opened bottle of Eclipse Mt Gay. Thinking of making a honey syrup from Honey and Baerenjaeger schnapps [1:1]. I have some vintage Hanschell's Falernum [it's red] from a Barbados vacation 30 years ago. Mango nectar, Coco Lopez on hand. Could work in a tall pilsner class too.
    A "Local" barman in Nassau kept his creme de coco warm with a tealight candle below the can -- punched with an olde school churchkey on the top. His trick was to put in a couple of fingers of crushed ice in a glass, add some turbinado sugar and ground allspice, then pour the hot coconut syrup over the ice -- encapsulating the spices in the ice nuggets, then he built a Painkiller over that. It was Stirred, not shaken. Finishing the crushed ice at the bottom was the treat.
    What Falernum is that?

    • @BreezewayCocktailHour
      @BreezewayCocktailHour  Před 2 lety +1

      I think we used Bitterman's Falernum

    • @HootOwl513
      @HootOwl513 Před 2 lety

      @@BreezewayCocktailHour Thanks, Spike. I'll look for Bitterman's. I will first use up my concoction of 1/2 Velvet Falernum and 1/2 Hanschell's. The later was in an XMAS stocking of little ''airline bottles'' of Barbados rums my Mom gave me, after we visited that island in the Summer of '90. Not knowing what Falernum was then, I kept it in my medicine cabinet for years. [Thinking I might use in in a Bay Rum aftershave.] With a renewed TIKI conciousness opening my Third Eye for Rum, I realized it for the gem it was, and opened it. Touching a drop of it to my tongue. ''Wondrous stuff'' [to paraphrase Howard Carter, on poking a hole in the sealed chamber of Tut's Tomb, and seeing all the golden toys that awaited the Boy King in the Afterlife.]
      Hanschell's has a golden-reddish color, almond sweetness, subtle spice notes, and is an age-mellowed Falernum. Even mixed with JD Taylor's it gives a depth and mouthfeel to tropical cocktails that is unsurpassed. I am simultaneously filled with joy at serving it to my friends, and filled with sadness knowing it is the LAST of its kind.
      Aloha nui loa.
