The stuff I've seen in Lidl recently tends to be the same as it's been for the past five years or so. I almost bought a USB PD power supply there a couple of weeks ago, I guess a teardown of one of them could be interesting. Generally Lidl/Aldi stuff is well made, they have to conform to EU safety standards and everything has a 3 year warranty.

I like the palm-size unit, the large display, the auto mode (I'm very lazy), the sharp test leads (for breadboards) and the fact that the test leads plug into the bottom of the meter, not the front. The lack of current measurement would be a deal breaker for me though, plus it's not cheap compared to competitors. The inaccuracy in temperature measurement is a bit of a worry too.

That's great for determining if an outlet is wired properly whereas a three light tester can sometimes read false positives if the hot is incorrect. This can also be done with a noncontact tester but sometimes they are a little false positive due to sensitivity.

Plug it into your PC to charge, and while it's connected try to measure the AC mains voltage.
    I dare you.
No, don't actually do that, you would be staking danger and destruction on a coin flip.
Instead, let's just marvel at the hefty insulation on the probe connections, in contrast with the easily touchable USB port (especially with a charge lead plugged in!) and the probable lack of isolating device between the two. (Is that what the relay does? Nope, I can see at least the "COM" tracks go right on past it!)

The meter has almost no input protection. Also i do not like the fact that you could measure 1000Volts while having a USB port exposed, or worse: connected to something.
Would be interesting to test how good the separation between the USB and input jacks is and how the meter behaves if "misused" (measuring 1000Volts on resistance mode e.g.)

@@DiodeGoneWild They should have used a special adaptor that re-uses the probe sockets for charging. I mean some connectors deep inside the bottom of the probe sockets, isolated from the probe connections, and an USB-C adaptor that plugs into the probe sockets, reaching the secondary connectors in their bottom. This would be the only feasible safe way to charge it, because it would prevent charging while the probes are connected. The other option would be a DC/DC converter, but a DC/DC converter that is OK for 1000V cat III isolation would make it a lot more expensive.

Its probably good for quick measurements and low voltage DC stuff, but when doing electrical work or fixing something like an SMPS I usually reach for one of my Fluke or other name-brand meters. If they were honest and dispensed with the "CATIII 1000V" rating then it would be an ok meter for the average DIYer since it wouldn't be making claims to things it can't do.

I remember when I bought my first DMM. It was a Fluke 77, and it cost $320 Canadian back in 1989. I took good care of it, and it still looks and works like brand new. I have bought a few Fluke multimeters since then and have not had any problems with them. The thing I am wondering about is how long these Chinese meters will last. Given the track record of products made in China, I am a little skeptical about that. I have also noticed that some electronic products made in China in the 90s had better quality components in them than what they are putting out now.

@@TheBalconyWorkspace That makes sense about the components made in Japan. I opened up a single outlet surge protector made in China from 1996 for Radio Shack, and it has good quality MOVs and safety capacitors. The quality and design of the circuit board are well done. It seems like cutting costs within the last 10 or 15 years is the priority for many manufacturers. There are still some products from China that are well-made if you are willing to pay more money for them.

I have a couple of handheld Fluke, a Brymen, an Extech and a cheap Aneng AN8008.
Somehow I mostly use the cheap Aneng. It's small and unexpectedly accurate for such a cheap device.
To be on the safe side I only use it for low energy electronics work. But this caution is mainly due to the fact that I am using the small cheap probes that came with the meter.

The problem of this cheap China garbage is the initial calibration and the long time accuracy! For measurements of uncritical coarse things like the AC/DC grid voltage it maybe okay, but for precision measurements better stick to brand meter like Fluke
