Caspian Seals - Expedition 2017

In 2017 Aselle Tasmagambetova set out on the first of three expeditions to date as part of her mission to save the Caspian Seal which is facing extinction. The expedition aimed to analyse the habitat around the Kalamkas oil field. Scientists took samples from the surrounding environment in order to analyse pollution levels in and around the Caspian Sea. Oil exploration in the Caspian is believed to have helped disperse contaminated sediment from the bottom of the sea harming the seal’s habitat. The Caspian Seal population has decreased by 90% over the past 100 years.

В 2017 году Асель Тасмагамбетова отправилась в первую из трех экспедиций на сегодняшний день в рамках миссии по спасению каспийского тюленя, который находится на грани исчезновения. Экспедиция была нацелена на анализ среды обитания вокруг нефтяного
месторождения Каламкас. Ученые взяли образцы из окружающей среды, чтобы проанализировать уровни загрязнения в Каспийском море и вокруг него. Считается, что разведка нефти на Каспии подняла загрязненный осадок со дна моря, нарушив среду обитания тюленя. За последние 100 лет популяция каспийского тюленя сократилась на 90%.

I didn't even know that there was a Pusa seal species in the Caspian Sea. Hopefully the seal population can be restored.

I love seals and researching all species. All ring seals and sub species of them including the Caspian seals are my favorite but ive noticed there isnt much information about caspian seals online for me to learn about so thank you for this. it’s terrible whats happening to them. thank you for recusing them and trying to help
