    Ohh, I remember how hard and mean Greenday were criticized for this song, saying that phrase I think stupid that “they sold out”. I think this guys saw into the future, what music was going to sound and they evolved. This song bring me the best memories and can anyone say it sounds outdated, even today, right now? I’m more of a U2 fan but Greenday is a favorite too

    Their whole album American Idiot is excellent. Tells a fantastic coming of age story. This is the song where the narrator (known as the Jesus of Suburbia) is over the high of leaving home and the realization that he is on his own has truly sunk in. The album is incredibly well written, and you really have to check out the best song off of it, Jesus of Suburbia.

    for me, this song always represented a metaphorical "road" that we all travel in life. Every person has at one point or another felt alone. I feel the confidence presented by the lead singer, Billie Armstrong, signifies his understanding of not actually being alone. He may be physically alone (or feel that way sometimes) as he progresses in life but he understands that "someone up there" is with him. I always took that to mean that someone being God who has promised to always walk with us in our darkest and loneliest moments. But that's just my interpretation.

    The "greenscreen" is not actually a greenscreen and wasn't intended to look "realistic". It's rear projection, and I think they made it look like that on purpose.

    Good catch on the industry success thing! Although, by this point they had already signed onto Reprise. The album also has a larger narrative and concept, following the protagonist, Jesus of Suburbia (not sure if you reacted to that yet but it might clear up some of the things talked about in the album whenever you get to it). It borrows a lot of biblical imagery throughout the album, so the 'someone up there' might also be a call to a lost faith

    I usually come here when it’s a 1D, Harry or Louis reaction but Green Day hits me right there in the nostalgia of years past, when I think I was in high school and partied a bit too much, lol. Thank God Louis is doing things deeply inspired on Green Day and Oasis. I have this memory of expensive pizza and beer while listening this song with my ex. He was a musician (classic piano degree) and he was explaining me the production of it.

    I always interpreted this song being about Hollywood Blv. In LA, and all the artists that are trying to make it work but for many reasons can’t seem to get recognized, and even though it’s a “broken dream” they just keep walking on the road accompanied by their shadows and ghosts, not knowing where it’s leading them…

  • @ADAM_NORMAN
    @ADAM_NORMAN Před 2 lety +2

    I wrote the early version of this song.... You're interpretation is right! As for Hollywood, many go there to become stars and fail ultimately.... The few that do become stars, well, especially us singers, get pushed around by critics and whatnot to the point that it affects our mental health.... Thus, our personal lives enter turmoil to the point of we feel like a waste of space internally, although we have loving families and friends and money and whatnot.... Well, I guess that I was kind of lucky to have a great friend that helped me out of my turmoil, but, it took a whole lot of years for that to even happen to begin with....

    Green Day was the bridge between the punk generation before mine and whatever the punk scene is now. The roots of Lincoln Park. And had influences of The Romones and the Sex Pistols and Johnny Rotten. Hence the bridge, from late 80's, to the 2010's.

  • @kayy8429
    @kayy8429 Před 2 lety +5

    I actually think their success brought a lot of loneliness. After signing to a major label everyone in the punk scene labeled them as sellouts and didn’t really accept them as part of the punk community anymore. They dealt with a lot of backlash and Billie Joe talked in the Broadway Idiot documentary how once they became bigger they lost a lot of the musical connections and camaraderie they had with other bands when they were just starting out and how much he missed feeling a part of something. I feel like this song kind of touches on that

    This song holds a special place in my heart. It was the first rock song I ever heard that made me go "Woah what the hell?? Where has _this_ been my whole life?!"
    After American Idiot, I fell in love with System of a Down, and later Disturbed. But I'll never forget that evening listening to this song on repeat while messing around with my Megablox Dragons stuff. Posing little Lego-sized orcs and elves on the battlefield with their little plastic swords and axes facing down massive dragons while _Boulevard_ and _Holiday_ blasted from my boom box.

And also great reaction! If you like that 90s rock like I do, then you should consider checking out "The offspring" if you haven't done them yet. My favourite song by them is Gone away and Can't repeat. I have listened to the offspring for probably 10 years and saw them in a concert, three years ago and they were great live too. I'm glad you like this song. :)

  • @coreym0
    @coreym0 Před 2 lety +2

    This was like circa 2004 so not the best effects but they weren't going for realistic backgrounds. Even bands today some things are supposed to look fake and it isn't because of the time period that's just their vision. Also, this album was meant to be a rock opera so the lyrics go off songs before it. Like many great rock operas songs can be listened to alone, but you get the full picture if you listen to the entire album. I loved this album when it came out and listened to it over and over. They also did turn it into a Broadway musical and I saw it on Broadway and thought it was great (it had some of my favorite Broadway alums in it so I was hyped).

    Never a devoted green day fan but I love every bit of their music - this song is a classic. Not sure if it’s related at all but are you aware of the artwork ‘boulevard of broken dreams’ featuring actors such as Marilyn Monroe, James Dean etc all sitting around a corner cafe/ bar? It was hugely popular for people to have late 80s early 90s I think. Always wondered if there was any link but never stopped to check - does anyone know?

    I think everybody should have at least one time in their life listened to:
    1. Jesus of Suburbia
    2. When September Ends
    Of course there are a lot more songs from them that are amazing but for one these are probably the biggest you are still missing and secondly I myself am not that well versed in Green day (yet) so I couldn't tell you the hidden gems

    I was in high school when Dookie came out. It was huge... fast forward to this album. Completely different but another masterpiece... what i dont like is people that criticize how they sold out and all that. They created something Completely new and kept to their roots. I dont like bands that sound exactly the same every single album. Bands evolve and get better at songwriting over a long period of time.. all the great ones have done this....Beatles, Stones, Queen, Floyd, Cure.... Green Day belongs in the conversation with the greatest to do it.
