Excadrill is finally back, and against the odds it has maintained a position in OU.
Many gamers thought Iron Treads would end up outclassing Excadrill, but the usage stats suggest the inverse.
Sand Rush and Mold Breaker remain 2 great ability choices, and this Mole has Emerged from the Earth with a lot to offer in this tough metagame.

Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Will he see it? Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on CZcams. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

Iron Treads would not have been outclassed at all, it still has volt switch, knock off, and a more balanced stat spread, allowing for it to utilize offensive utility sets much better. This is still useful as it doesn't instantly drop to one attack from Gholdengo like Great Tusk.

A point in Excadrill's favor for tera is unlike Sand Stream (for some reason), Sand Rush gives sand immunity regardless of type, so Exca won't get eroded itself if you tera.

Excadrill adapts and survives to stay relevant. It is such a well designed mon that it only needs very little boosts to remain an OU threat.
Truly Excadrill is the cooler Sandslash.

It’s also pretty important to note that Excadrill only ended Gen 8 as a UU mon because tiering rises got locked a couple months before the generation ended; not only is Excadrill still a legitimately excellent pick in SS OU to this day, but it technically wouldn’t have even been UU had usage-based rises continued until the end of the gen; it had over 4.52% usage in SS OU right before SV released so it actually WAS OU by usage in any other gen.
The funny thing about Excadrill is that it would've risen back to OU in Gen 8 had tier shifts not been locked half a year before Gen 9. It had 5.18% usage in the July 2022 shift and 6.56% usage in the October 2022 shift, which are both above 4.52% needed to move up but alas, the tiers were locked so drill couldn't move up. (Note: when I say tier shifts were locked I mean moving up a tier was locked, tier drops were allowed all the way to the end of Gen 8 as current gen)
As a huge fan of gen8 UU (I know gen 8 singles fan) keeping drill was fantastic for the tier, not only as a spinner but a string offensive threat with swords dance

Excadrill, at the moment is actually the #1 ranked Pokemon in Gen 6 ORAS Viability Rank. Its the highest ranked Ground Type in the tier, for obvious reason - 21-22 spot higher than Garchomp and Gliscor at 22 and 23, and 33 spot higher than Landorus Therian at 34

Excadrill turned around my BW playthrough ,my first pokemon game, from an uphill battle to one sweep after another, and it's been my favorite pokemon since. I'm so glad it's still managing to carve a niche in OU after all the power creep from newer gens
Excadrill has returned to gen 9 in the new dlc. And surprisingly, it has maintained its OU position as of the most recent tier shift. Excadrill has managed to not only outperform the fellow ground/steel type Iron Treads which many players thought would outclass Excadrill if it returned, its also outperforming many of its fellow OU staples of the past like Garchomp and Latios. Excadrill has had an illustrious competitve career folks and it has always been one of my favourite of the new pokemon released in gen 5, i love its ground/steel typing, its multiple ability choices, and its really good movepool too. Excadrill really started off with a bang in gen 5, sand rush + permanent sandstorm was so powerful that after a while excadrill was banned completely. Many years later this ban was reversed, Excadrill was unbanned and instead the ability Sand Rush itself was banned. Gen 5 OU was still played to this day and Excadrill remains a staple of fthe modern metagame, even without sand rush as an option, Sand Force is a great alternative. This boosts ground, rock, and steel type attacks by 1.3x in the sandstorm which really enhances Excadrill's damage output, allowing it to pressure common enemies like Ferrothorn. Excadrill was one of the few good rapid spinners in the format which is very important. Defog and Heavy-Duty Boots did not exist back then (defog did but doesnt work like it does today.). And also, mold breaker is a great ability option. This ability ignores the effects of all other abilities meaning you can earthquake a Rotom-Wash with levitate for example and just completely ignore levitate's ground immunity. From gen 6 onwards following the nerf to permanent weather setting abilities, Excadrill with sand rush was now legal. This pokemon was definitely a good win condition, but since sand only lasts for 5 to 8 turns now its no longer as overwhelming.
Excadrill is my favourite Pokemon, I love how it's designed both aesthetically and mechanically. I've also used it to great success (top 32 on ladder is my peak) and I am so glad people are seeing how good it is

@@qwikscopez6619 I don't play Ubers UU unfortunately, but I have an OU team that's pretty decent with it. It's Ttar, Exca, Rotom wash, Sinistcha, Iron Crown and Lando-T
Exca, Rotom and Sinistcha are all standard sets, Iron Crown is standard AV, Lando T is the standard earth power set and the Ttar is AV Stone Edge Knock Low kick Ice beam max speed max attack Jolly. I've had good success with this so lemme know if this works

Great video but I noticed a few times you misspoke where it may have been confusing for people less knowledgeable of the game. I believe you said sand teams instead of sun teams at one point and you said stellar Tera gives a stab boost of 1.5 when it’s actually 2x. There were 1 or 2 other I think but don’t have the time to check lol. Just a heads up maybe for editing future videos to look out for stuff like that

Do people ever run Hipowdon anymore? I prefer it over TTar because of slack off and it’s special defensive use. It seems like it could stick around better, and when the primary purpose it to keep sand up, wouldn’t hipowdon be useful?
I guess it depends on the needs of your team. Tar is better as a sdef non because of the boost rock types get, is also less passive with better attacking stats and insane coverage. Hippo has superior defensive typing, has better longevity and is a much better physical wall. Both can work but Tar is probably a preferable pick on the majority of offensive teams
They should, ttar is just trash and you’d only use it to enable excadrill. At that point use hippo to at least not be 5v6ing
