Miss USA 1990 was a time of break through. Carole Gist was it!! She was the Miss Universe 1990 in my opinion. The elegance, and class at the time was a big thing in pageants unlike today. Carole will always be remembered as the first Black Miss USA.

They did an excellent job, Carol the winner of Miss USA, placed as first runner up in miss Universe 1990 and then Gina Tolleson first runner up in Miss USA 1990 went on to be crowned Miss World 1990. Congratulations
They didn’t even recognize Gina’s achievements at MU 1991 which I think lead to MW not renewing the franchise for 1992.

I just remember how gorgeous Carole Gist was that night! An amazing winner and she broke down so many barriers!

Nearly forgot about this incredible moment!! Carole graduated from Detroit Cass Tech like Miss U.S.A 1993 Kenya Moore did!! I was just at a friends house who graduated Cass Tech in '89 and asked him who the names were of the TWO Cass Tech alumni who were Miss. U.S.A and he could only remember Kenya in '93,and asserted there was only one lady from Cass who won this title,but I KNEW there were two,because I was jealous that Detroit Chadsey never had ONE alumni,hold this grand title,but had forgotten the exact name!! So,I looked in my"Detroit Almanac"I bought in 2001,and saw it was Carole Gist,and I had to come here and SEE the actual moment that I did remember brought me to tears that a hometown lady won!! Man,is Carole GORGEOUS!!
She definitely is one of my favorite winners for MIss USA, and let me tell you, this women looks just as good now as she did then. She's now married with the name Carole Gist Strammler. You can look her up by name. It also was about time that the color of ones skin no longer matter, as it should have always been.
This is one of my favorite Miss USA pageants, too bad they aren't like this today.

I was a freshman in college 1990 watching this in my room.
The first African-American to win the Miss USA title!!! Michigan produced the first two African-American women to wear the crown. The other was Kenya Moore who is now on The Real Housewives of Atlanta.
Carole ended the Miss Texas winning streak. I remember how much my family and I cheered her on that night! Gist said that she would have gone alot further if she had succumbed to the "casting couch" when when she moved to LA to pursue an acting career. Instead, now she works as a very successful Personal Fitness Trainer and Nutritionist in Surburban Detroit

Here in Detroit,it was common-knowledge that Cass Tech had the FINEST girls in the whole city,and producing TWO Miss U.S.A ladies prooves it!! I remembered I CRIED when Carole won and began crying!!

There were 2 guys who used to train/prep the winners of Miss Texas for their state titles. Their business was called Guy/Rex, a combo of their first names. They're the ones who taught them everything about how to win. Long ago, Hispanic countries trained their winners over the long run. You probably noticed how they pose the same; walk the same; well, that's from training. (This information was given on a national program). And now other countries are catching on and becoming more competitive.

Kelly Hu was leading right up to being given an unfortunate question by one of the judges. It had to do with women going into combat; and should they? Kelly was absolutely sure they should go, and even mentioned "body bags". We felt that was when she lost the title.

Not only did she support her lawsuit, but she filed a lawsuit as well using the same attorney. They both settled with the pageant later on in 1991.

Carole Gist was actually the first African American woman to win the title of miss usa, and the first African American woman from Detroit Michigan to win as well. Not Kenya Moore who claims to be a part of "history". If anyone is a part of history it's Carole Gist, but unfortunately she doesn't get the recognition she deserves

You're referring to the Miss 1992 World America Pageant, which ran nationally once. Sharon Belden (Miss Florida USA 1992 as well) won that title. Karin Meyer from Alaska, who was in the top 6 here, was first runner-up at that pageant.
I remember watching that and recently found it here on youtube. All the pageants from the late 80s til about 93-94 were the absolute best.
@MrTops2100 Surprisingly, Georgia has never had a Miss USA. The closest that they came was in 1993 with Erin Nance who was first runner up to Kenya Moore, also from Michigan and a friend and classmate of Carole Gist. The first runner up here, Miss South Carolina, went on to win Miss World later that same year.

@amindr Now they travel alot together, but back then Miss USA and Miss Universe had for the most part entirely different travelling schedules. Miss USA from 1984 to 1991 was under contract with the JC Penney company and spent 100 days out of her reign making appearances @ stores all across the USA in return for her prizes from them. Also, she made appearances on behalf of P&G. Miss Universe did make appearances for P&G, but for the most part they had two separate schedules.

No, the tallest Miss world winner is Julia Kourochkina Miss World 1992, she's 6'2" without shoes. Another is Zhang Zilin Miss World 2007 shes around 6 feet tall without high heels

I want this pageant be uploaded from a local TV station. The start of the pageant where Miss Michigan USA pageant director Melissa Proctor-Pitchford in the running until elimination and the rest of the pageant from the then CBS affiliate from Detroit WJBK. This pageant will have commercials included and segments the first half from WCPO 9 (now ABC, was CBS until 1996) and the second half from WJBK (now Fox, was CBS until 1994).
So happy Carol Gist won. She was my favorite and I loved her dress. I do think Miss Alaska was either snobby or just focused but she didn't even thank the poor soldier who helped her down the steps. Does anyone know what ever happened to Miss Alaska? What is she doing now?
If you think about it the fact that you think Gretchen was better than Carole had nothing to do with how they placed at Miss Universe. If Gretchen had competed in 1990 or Carole had gone in 1989 who is to say that they would have done as well as the other did?! They both did well and were great reps of the USA.

No, she was lucky to finish 1st rup facing the world. But miss universe being held in the United States was a boost. Carol did a fine job and was a good miss usa.
Carole was lucky that they expanded the number of finalists to 6 instead of the usual 5 at Miss Universe. Otherwise she would’ve been just a semi-finalist.
@ Paconot _ Carole finished 2nd in the first interview portion. As the field was narrowed down to 5, she stumbled a bit (not because of grammar), but not enough to miss making the top three. She nailed the final question and sealed her fate. Since u are the grammar queen/king, she did incorrectly say "...each of us HAVE..." instead of each of us has, a mistake most people make, esp. under pressure.
@1teedie I also think that, because the night of Miss Universe 1990 she brought as a star, so georgous and stunning, but just one think:: she did'nt answer exactly what she was asked in the final question and Norway did it, so she won MIss Univese pageant 1990 and USA first runner up.

I have never heard anyone criticize Carole, who has some Cherokee in her, for being too light or not being black enough. As far as Vanessa, she was criticized mostly for seemingly distancing herself from the black community and for having a white boyfriend. When the scandal broke, the black community supported her, while her boyfriend dumped her.
