I was one month shy of my twentieth birthday when she passed. There was a special report saying that she had undergone surgery. The next day my eldest sister (RIP Lisette) watched 'I Love Lucy ' (Channel 5 at 9am in NYC then). Before the telecast began. There came on the TV screen, 'We remember Lucille Ball today on her passing or something similar to that. 'OMW' My sister and I said, 'Lucy died '. We got very, very sad. We cried. And that day was cold, raw and rainy. It was even cold and rainy when Vivian Vance died too. I was 10. There won't ever be extraordinary talent like them anymore, anymore

Carol Cook knew Lucy forever. They go all the way back to Jamestown. She said when she finally arrived in California Lucy was standing at the open door of her house, it looked like it was straight out of a movie magazine, "A Day In The Life of Lucille Ball." She did an interview for the BBC and said Lucy was her matron of honour at her wedding. She was all dressed in white and wore no makeup, Lucy said she looked like the Ghost from Christmas Past.

Amazing connection to Lucy's mention of Wee Bonnie Baker in this ep. Baker was a real band singer in the '30s and '40s, and her cover of the 1917 song, "Oh, Johnny, Oh!" (that Lucy sings a snippet of here) became a #2 smash on Columbia Records in 1940.
Here's the "hidden" Lucy connection: In 1956 (what, about half a dozen years before, or slightly more, than when this ep aired)?, Bonnie recorded an album for Warner Bros. Records, called "Oh, Johnny!", and the orchestra backing Bonnie on the album was conducted by none other than Wilbur Hatch!
Hatch, of course, was the sole composer for three episodes of I Love Lucy (1951-56), four episodes of The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour (1959-60), all 156 episodes of The Lucy Show (1962-68), and all of the Here's Lucy (1968-69) episodes up to the time of his death in 1969. True Lucy fans will remember Desi's line in the "Vitameatavegamin" episode, calling offstage, "Mr. Hatch, if you please!"
Lucy's mention here, of Bonnie and that song, was (perhaps among other things) a nod to Mr. Hatch and his many musical contributions to Lucy & Co.!

No, too rough, nasal and raspy because of heavy smoking. High-pitched, but harsh. It's Vivian who had the well-trained, beautiful, controlled and emotive voice, but it was never showcased properly in the Lucy series because Lucy was the star. Vivian even was forbidden ever to slim down 'too much' to compete with Lucy in terms of looks. Everyone had to know Lucy was the star and nobody could outshine her.

Hans Conreid thinks he has it tough teaching Lucy how to sing, wait until he has to teach Jethro how to play the violin on The Beverly Hillbillies.

Ethel Merman and Lucy were close friends in real life. That was hilarious when Lucy tried to teach the Merm how to sing - on par with teaching the Pope how to pray.

She was awful in professional terms! Vivian was the one with the professional-quality voice, who could equally put across a sexy number and light opera. Lucy's voice was screechy, harsh and raspy from too much smoking, both as a singer and as a speaker.

Yeah it was a Live audience. So they didn't edit it. You can also hear Desi's laugh in the episode when Lucy and viv wanna be firefighters and it's the scene when Lucy climbs the ladder and Vivian hoses her with the water and you hear Desi laughing in the back lol. He was there at the audience since he was producer of the show too.
