      Nice job holding tite to the paver . when I was a young man in the hot summer if you rolled away from the paver it would cost my dad a case of beer each time it happened . back in the day pavers had training wheels on the front of the pavers that would hold you tite so you could not get away . If you want to have a lot of fun paving try backing up to a seal cote paver in reverse on the fly .Now thats a lot of FUN ...

    First off, as a former paver operator for nearly 50 years (retired 2 yrs.now) you did a fantastic job while in the paver. It would have been a pleasure unloading you each round. Please always remember to let your bed down far enough before you pull out off the box empty. What a lot of drivers don't understand is that when you drag your lip out of the front of the paver, the front flaps on the machine act as a sling shot and fire hot asphalt at the operator. Plus after a while it rips those flaps off the paver and as an operator, they hate that...
    Lastly, you described all the exact reasons why asphalt workers like doing what they do. When we look behind us we can see the progress we are making and mostly everyday you are working some place different and building a different road...
    Stay safe, and keep up the great work!
    Keith

      It's not easy to stay in the funnel either. The worst thing is when they make the thin top layer and push you forever. At the the base layer, he only push a few meters. Sometimes with trees and street lights. You really have to concentrate.
      We do this with semis but here are no frameless trailer ever. These are deathtraps. With a trailer combination, operators don't have that much patience. This has to be done in one step.
      Asphalt also has to be covered here and thermal troughs have to be used. Release agents are no longer allowed here; in the past we used to spray out the troughs with diesel. We have a type called OpA (open-pored asphalt), which is particularly disgusting. This stuff sticks like epoxy.
      To stay on the paver we have a paver mode. The air suspension remains active and the brake on the last axle is subjected to some air pressure. With the foot brake he lifts the tractor out and the train can do the jackknife. If you don't stay on the paver or have to start again, they get crazy.

    When I moved to this Colorado market, I spent just over 10 years as a company driver on end dumps, double bottom side dumps, and belly dumps. All very interesting work and challenging at times, and interesting to see the job progress to finish.
    Then my last 5 years I drove for an asphalt paving company on a "flow boy" trailer - V shaped body sidewalls with a 3 ft rubber belt on the bottom to unload the product. BEST job I ever had! Loved the paving work, even the mandatory night work on the Interstate Hwy roto milling and paving, and challenging to back a 40 ft trailer all the way to the paver down a 9 ft. wide lane around corners without running over fresh asphalt in the adjoining lane, especially in the dark with only the light from your 4 way flashers!
    When not paving, we were stockpiling material at the hot plant yard from the company quarry about 13 miles away. Could get boring at times, but there was always CB chatter with the 6-8 other company trucks on the haul. Then we got several contracts to provide material for the enormous expansion at Ft. Carson Army Base. In addition to the normal stockpiling at the various building sites, they used the flow boy trailers to dump fill inside the completed building foundations for the concrete flooring, sometimes while the steel walls were going up!
    Never got boring because we never knew what job we'd be working on the next day, and even if the same job it would be a different way of coming in or different material going to a different spot. The challenge of getting a 40 footer into the exact spot where they wanted the load is what I enjoy.
    Glad to see you really enjoy your work, sure makes your job a pleasure, doesn't it.

      @@70elcamino. bottom dumps is all we use here in southeast Idaho for road paving because with end dumps every time the paver stops it leaves a little bump in the road and with belly dumps they technically never have to stop.

      @mikel9567 Před 11 měsíci +1

      Paving with a pup is far more common than with a transfer in this area. We do it at the county I work for since we don't have any transfers and it isn't fun. Not only do you have to keep against the paver but you have to keep the pup centered on the paver while keeping everything straight. It's a PITA when you pave curves with a pup. We don't do much paving, pretty much only pre-level and patching. We contract out all the major paving jobs to companies like Lakeside (the blue trucks in this video). They have much better equipment and skill than us. It's interesting to watch them pave. The super dumps are really nice.

    Young lady that is a wonderful set of rings that you are wearing lol . Just so you know, you can pave over gravel when it is raining ☔️ but if you try to pave over asphalt it will not adhere properly to the base layer of asphalt. I can’t remember how many paving jobs we where sent home from without any work being done because of the rain ☔️. Can I make a recommendation? Always wear your seatbelt, in life and trucking you never know what you’re going to run into out there. One more thing that I learned from paving, when you are backing up to the paver machine stop just before you hit the machine, the reason being is when you hit the paver you force the screed at the rear of the paver into the asphalt and it leaves a ridge in the pavement or bump in the surface. The paver operator for the company that I worked for liked my idea so much he started applying the idea as a regular routine. We would never be allowed to pave with that much rain ☔️ coming down, just a shower was okay. Government has rules for the temperature of the asphalt to be laid down on the roadway. I cannot believe that the company that you are working for doesn’t demand that you tarp the load of asphalt to help keep it warmer. We always did, because you want to help keep the asphalt as hot as possible to do the best job for the company and the people who would eventually drive on the roadway. One more thing that I learned from paving is follow the instructions from the paving machine operator, but don’t stop thinking for yourself. I saw the operator twice make errors in judgement that caused power lines to be pulled down when we were paving at night.

    Paving with a pup is not so bad except for the hooking and unhooking of that trailer, that is a pane in the rear end. Most times the work crew has no idea what it takes to turn that thing around. I have had times where I had to hang the rear two axles over a cliff to get turned around, not fun. Pups are not usually a big money maker for the truck. It takes twice as much fuel to pull them, and the trailer requires lots of maintenance. They do however get more jobs for the truck, and that's the trade off. She is good at this. Also dumping in front of the paver usually cost you a case of beer.

    • @andrewcrawley4429
      @andrewcrawley4429 Před rokem

      Right, I did say it gets you more jobs, but while you do charge more, you don't net more unless the rates have changed a lot since I was doing it, we got 85 for the truck and 25 for the trailer. I agree that who you know will get you the really good jobs. I remember in my beginning, we always got the worst jobs that were really hard on the trucks. we routinely went through a set of tires on truck and trailer every year. Overloaded and on shale gravel roads will eat through any tire you have, but we had work, didn't make much net and worked like fools to keep tires on them, drive all day and repair tires at night. It is still fun for the most part, if you can survive through the early years of learning and being accepted. @@DauminiqueTheDumpTruckDriver

    Paving is my favorite as you get a little more sitting time vs a rock or dirt haul with fast loaders.
    Not to mention its just more intresting.
    We paved in a subdivision today. There's this one local paving company that gets big county projects where they go in and mill out the asphalt, then come back and plow up the entire subdivision or highway mixing in cement to fix soft soil conditions.
    Then grade it down to sub grade and repave it. They come to town every summer and sadly it will be winding down soon giving way to winter and return of rain, 10 hr dirt hauls and rock with occasional paving jobs.
    I always wondered how you would handle that pup on asphalt. You did great! How many total tons can you get out there per trip Daumi?
    Is that like a 2 hr turn around out there or farther?

    Ah paving on Hwy 20. Where is your tarp? Asphalt is always supposed to be tarped to retain the heat. There is a huge sign when you pull out of the silos telling you to tarp your loads. Don't do that on a government job. We've rejected asphalt loads that weren't tarped and got too cold. You will eat the cost if that happens. We pave in the rain all the time, it's Washington after all. Rain doesn't affect the asphalt. Only issue is it will cause the tack oil to run if we use any. When we pave, if you roll out from the paver and dump asphalt on the road, you buy the entire crew ice cream. I noticed when you unhooked you didn't drop a cone to tell you where to put your rear tire so you always hit the tongue on the first try. We always drop a cone on our left rear tire so when we back up to the trailer we can hit the tongue the first time. Makes it so much easier.

    • @DauminiqueTheDumpTruckDriver
      @DauminiqueTheDumpTruckDriver  Před 11 měsíci

      I don’t carry cones with me. That was a government job. The asphalt will be fine for 20 minutes. Besides if my tarp did roll out, which it doesn’t, it’s just an aggregate tarp. It doesn’t hold in heat. The entire electrical system of the tarp needs to be replaced. These 20+ year old tarps are nothing but problems.

      @@DauminiqueTheDumpTruckDriver yep was gonna say depending on the distance and outside temp, tarping wouldn't be specifically mandatory. Was overlay paving hwy 20 in Oregon, 2 1/2 hour drive in 100° temps with pup tarps not working and didn't have a load rejected. Rain will drain the heat faster but 20 min ain't nothing

    That is some nerve wracking stuff. A lot of pressure to not put your truck in the way of things.
    Awesome professional job as always.

    Hi Dauminique I don’t know if you have mirror brackets from your centre bolt mirror arm down to the nut on your air breather but kenworth sells them and they take the shaking mirror vibration away. I put them on mine and it’s a game changer. You are absolutely a great owner operator girl💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

    I don’t know why I enjoy watching some one else do the same things I do😂
    I’d rather pave any day. Paving pays us a flat rate rather the truck is moving or sitting still. Rock pays tonnage and you burn way more fuel. Money is in blacktop for sure.

    I don’t understand why you don’t take off the take the trailer off for the day it at home. It be a lot easier. There might not be places you can’t drop off the trailer. And most trucks 🛻 can Carrie 35 ton. I used to do a lot of paving New York the trucks don’t bring their little trailer because you may not have a place to park the trailer. you go back to the paver to me it just recent time. It could’ve been a plant on it. Backing up too well I used to drive trucks too. Now I’m retired and I used to do all the paving more than 15 years I’m just trying are you guys think about it because I know it’s a pain in the ass take the trailer off and put it back on and I love those big long tractor trailers with the belt, dumping and to the paver 60 tons a load have a nice day drive safe and have fun

    Hauling asphalt in Florida is the same,,, only difference is the ground is average 115 degrees and asphalt stays around 300 degrees (tarped) Still you better soak down the bed, bump up and let them push, it will flow like Lava into the paver hopper,, fun video, Thank You,,,

    KW's have tough times staying clean in the rain. Especially heated mirrors. All the "" smutz"" dries on them. I've driven Frieghtshaker and Mack as well and they don't have as bad a time staying clear. My Peterbilt ( same co, PACCAR) as Kenworth. Same thing 😂. Working in the rain never fun.
