  • I have a JBL powered speaker that came in for no audio situation. After a little troubleshooting I found a bad voltage regulator and replaced all 4 capacitors just as a precaution.

    You should have put a heatsink on each of them. They don't cost much and helps cool down the regulators.

    I'm glad you give explanations of what you are doing and why. Like at 5:30 to 6:00 min. with the effect failed capacitors could have in that circuit. That is the kind of information that is not always available when reading books or watching other videos. Thanks again for another great video.

    I’m just dealing with this same board at present - same problem; I couldn’t source the exact same output filter caps for the 15v reg’s - I also used a 640uF 40v cap - which works fine.
    It’s come back to life however my low frequency amp is extremely low output - more diagnosis !

    This worked for as advertised. 2$ for the caps and a lot of patience with soldering. The speaker sounds like new.

    Hi there! Good Video!! I actually own these speakers and had them for about 9 years. I replaced all those caps about a year ago when one of the pair had a buzz. I just wanted to do it for both. Recently I also had a deep low freq hum from one of them that I can't get rid or. I just replaced the Big filter caps but the problem din't go away. It's a low freq hum and also if you touch the speaker gently you can actually feel it's vibrating. It makes a large pop when turning on as well. I had it taken apart but could not figure out the issue. I am not a pro I am just a musician/ sound engineer with some chops for electronics. If I take it to the local guys they start from $120 plus whatever they find. I paid $150 for the speaker back brand new so it's not worth it right now especially being unemployed because of covid. It does work and the hum isn't super loud but sometimes it annoys me. Any idea what it could be?

    • @norcal715
      @norcal715  Před 3 lety +1

      Is the hum 60 Hz and does it seem to change as the speaker warms up or cools down?

    • @TomiTtime
      @TomiTtime Před 3 lety +1

      @@norcal715 it is 60 and oscillating. Pulsing. No change in it when warms up. I have tested other parts of the monitor like input etc. I swapped this board into the other speaker cab just to cross test the problem is in the main board. But it did seem like that in the other enclosure the pop was a little less loud and a Hum was also not as great as here. But when putting the good board into this enclosure it was fine.

    This was really helpful to see inside - I have a pair from way back myself. Mine really rattle at certain low frequencies (especially unmastered audio during recording). Any thoughts on what might be causing that? My assumption is maybe screws inside the cabinet. Ever notice that in your usage/testing?

    • @norcal715
      @norcal715  Před rokem

      These seem to be very well engineered speakers, at least as audio reproduction go's. I would look for a failing woofer, or something loose inside.

    Hello, I am from Patagonia Argentina. By chance they brought a similar team to my workshop. I have no schematics. I found the 7915 with -2.65v at the output. Just in case I have replaced the 470uf and 100uf capacitors. Also the 1N4001 diodes. The device worked for a couple of hours and he had the same symptoms again. Treble is not heard. The bass is fine. I rechecked the 7915 and again there is no -15volt, only -2.60v. Can you give me any help, any advice? Anyway thanks for the video.

      Usually capacitor value tolerances are +80% -20% I always try to avoid using smaller values but normally ok to increase values by a small amount.

    Hey bro, I just bought a brand new JBL 305p MK2 and it was playing very great first 2 days but today Its just playing at an insanely low level that i can barely hear. It's also making popping sounds here and their. Im still hearing bass but im hearing a loud Hiss noise when i put my hear close to the tweeters. Sometimes when i turn the volume knob at the back of the speakers up and down, after a while it will just start playing fine for a few minutes and then a pop and it start playing low again... Which makes me to believe maybe their is a loose wire of something inside the speaker? Im not an audio technition but I would appreciate your advice. Thank you

    I was expecting to see a D class amplifier! JBL seems to have gone down hill with some of the crap that they are making these days. This one is either an older model or they are actually using better Amplifiers on the better (more expensive) models and just selling the JBL brand on the cheaper one's. EEVBlog did one recently and it was powered by a class D amplifier, I was thoroughly disappointed! People are buying these things thinking that it's a quality JBL product! The brand is ruined for me, can't trust it anymore.

      Class D doesn’t mean better… a well built class H or AB class amp with a good design will out perform any China built class D power amp design

      @@dylandylan11731 at the end of the day, it all comes down to what sounds good to the individual person and that then depends on what equipment they have used...
      When it comes to audio equipment, I'm a hoarder (self confessed) and I have at least over 100 amplifiers, whether consumer or pro grade or just amplifiers that are nothing more than PCB boards. I will confess that I don't own a class D two channel stereo amplifier, well not one that is commercially produced so I can't really comment on this but my Sony ES surround amplifier which is class D is terrible at music, movies are fine though...
