  • One way to define "noise" is a sound containing all frequencies! In reality, any given noise source comprises its own set of frequencies, each a unique "block" of frequencies to carve up over time using filters.

    These are always so inspiring!
    I'm reminded of a noise-using patch I made the other day in my system. I'm working with all-homebrew modules (not entirely by choice, I'm trying to save up for a MATHS and a Wogglebug) and they're all pretty rudimentary, so my rack's only oscillator is based on LMNC's "super simple" reverse-avalanche oscillator, and the filter is a vactrol-controlled passive LPF. But I do have a noise generator that outputs plain white and pink noise. By turning the oscillator down past where it stops, and CVing with filtered pink noise, you can get chains of not-quite periodic clicks, kind of like a Geiger counter; I'm using them as pings into a multi-effect, where reverb smears them out, delay repeats them, and a flanger or phaser turns them into chimes.

    Loved the sounds in this. I definitely overlooked processing noise. One of the first times I have most of the modules (only missing Wogglebug here). Dope intro too… Liked the Make Noise voice.

    Great vid as always, thanks ! Maybe a suggestion to go further with this patch could be :
    Put that sequenced noise through some sample & holds to make related secondary or third sequences based on the first. Could be used to sequence the free Mimeophone time input, QPAS wildcard inputs or even any morphagene input for some wild feedback sequencing.

    A really great demo, thanks Walker! I admit when I saw the title my immediate reaction was "wait a sec tho, the $4K B&G Shared System doesn't even have a 'traditional' noise source", but I guess a Morphagene reel will do just fine, actually probably significantly better than the traditional "abused transistor" not-really-white noise source. I've always thought that was a strange omission from the Shared System, and it was the second thing I added to mine, after Brains.

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory Před 2 lety

      The Shared System doesn't feature a traditional noise source because you actually have to Make it. From scratch. With a Wogglebug, Squarewave clock and an oscillator that can't keep up with the one it follows (DPO). But this is truly 'designer' noise :)

    • @jsleeio
      @jsleeio Před 2 lety

      @@CinematicLaboratory yes I'm aware that you can patch a noise source. It's still ridiculous. Synthesis shouldn't be an "I made it as difficult as possible" contest. Unless, I suppose, your primary goal is to post tangled patch cable messes on forums?

    So... 1) not one bit of this went over my head (for a change) ;-) 2) I feel like since Befaco released their noise module there has been renewed interest in it. Nice touch adding the voltage follower at the end. I think maybe this video suggests a weakness in the Make Noise lineup. You have no dedicated "Noise" sources? Future product firmware enhancement or hardware addition? Maybe a noise source / S&H with obvious MakeNoise spin on it obviously? This was right up my alley BTW.
