- In this uncut conversation from The Kubrick Series - the Movie Geeks United exploration of the films of Stanley Kubrick - director Rodney Ascher and producer Tim Kirk discuss the various theories related to The Shining as detailed in their documentary Room 237. This interview was conducted at the early stages of production on their documentary, which would later premiere at Sundance, Cannes, and has been picked up for release by IFC Films.

Thank you for listening! We should have these guys back on once the movie opens here in the States. This interview here was conducted before they even started production on it. I'll get back to you once I know a firm release date for it.
Fantastic.
Kubrick died before finishing EWS. Something like 25 minutes was edited out after his death. It's still a great film with many layers. Desire, deceit, sexuality, and marriage. Also the gap that exists between the ruling class and the rest of society. Curiosity to discover the things that are forbidden to us commoners. That curiosity killing the cat so to speak. A lot more going on if you have the eyes to see it. Same goes for the Shining. Many, many layers.
Some people can watch "Room 237" and see how feasible it is to connect a can of Calumet to Native American genocide, but at the same time completely ignore the can of Tang directly above it. There seems to be two main theories about this film: one is that Kubrick was referencing certain genocides committed throughout history, and the other is a confession about filming the moon landing. There is strong evidence for both, so why the fuck do people on both sides call each other ignorant?
Thanks for this chat. I'm a big fan of THE SHINING and I've read Paul Thomas Nelson's Kubrick book. I recently bought the Blu-ray and am looking forward to seeing if more details become apparent.
The reading of the Bear performing fellatio (capitulation) on the Englishman as Cold War/Space Race allegory (advancing colonialism into the cosmos) has considerable credence. Take a look at the opening "Interview" scene with Jack Torrence and Stuart Ullman (standing in as NASA/American manifest destiny); amid the eagle and flag symbology present in the scene is the brief, though conspicuous, appearance of a book simply titled "Red Book" on Ullman's desk. Kubrick's oeuvre is rich in allegory!
There is an etymological connection between labyrinth and axe. Look up the word "Labrys."
Don't know if that provides a line of interpretation, but it's an interesting word.
It's already opened in the UK, and opens in theaters and On Demand through IFC Midnight in the first quarter of 2013.
It's significant in that Salinger;s novel is about Holden's desire to save children from a corrupt adult world, a major trope in many of Kubrick's films and clearly so in The Shining with Danny seeing the world and its history as an elevator spewing blood.
Please go into your settings to disallow ads on your video. A lot of CZcamsr's don't know about this setting. Just a suggestion because the ad interuption in a discussion such as this really breaks the concentation. Where's the end of this discussion - it's very interesting!
The strangeness of "Lunar" Saturn 5 rocket:
1. launch the 105s flight wasthe 8 km, but according to
NASA is 24 km away!
2. Detach 1 and 2 steps occurred at 25 km, but
according to NASA-62...68 km!
3. Set fire to part of the hull, about 20 m of the
flame!
4. Blast Corps 10 m diameter of exactly 3 c prior to
separating step 1.
5. within 1s - 4 (!) there was an explosion, cross in
hand, and the rocket has become dark, the diameter is
reduced to 7 m!
6. second-stage ROCKET-according to the film, joined by
18 c!
7. All these points-only "Lunar" Saturn 5 rockets.
When Danny is riding his big wheel on the second floor, I noticed that when Danny passes the Colorado Lounge (on his right side) he goes into the 237 hall and the hotel room doors on the same side as the Colorado Lounge could not have rooms at all. Those doors on the right could NOT have been to guest rooms. No room for these rooms because the Colorado Lounge extends into those areas. Now I understand that Kubrick had to put all of his narrative ideas into a limited amount of stage space. People put too much emphasis on his stage limitations by not understanding that he tried to keep costs down by compacting his set designs which includes Ullman's office window. I expect that Kubrick had purposed for his audiences to find his meanings subversely but, too much is made about as to the structure of the set in relation to his subliminal tactics. It's just a way of getting to compress his set to make his look authentic and cost effective.
I agree. That whole story about the office window cracked me up because I felt very strongly it was a set limitation
Would love to see 'Room 237'. Is there any chance it could be on You-tube? Will I ever not have the passion I have for this movie????
This was conducted before they even went into production on it, so we wanted some clarity on what they might have called the film at the time.
Just watched Room 237 again this Halloween. I just love all those theories about The Shining.
Jay Weidner is actually in their film, and Weidner's interview with us is here on our channel.
Some very interesting points are made here. The Shining is one of those on my 'short list' of films I feel are overrated BUT I'm willing to give another look at as I grow older. Movies are a lot different to a 15-year-old and 25-year-old. I never noticed the Playgirl, that seems like something Jack or Alex (from Clockwork) would do! I guess I'm watching it again soon!
Or 15-year-old and 52 - year now !
Yes, I think that's it, because it is Wendy who saves and escapes with Danny, leaving Jack frozen into the maze and the hotel's past, present, and future.
Many layers to full metal jacket as well. You could look at in so many ways.A black comedy, docudrama even kinda like a horror film as well.
the bottom line is that this is a ghost story where the hotel is haunted and it's alive...it's very unnatural and scary when innomate objects like houses come to life. also, the overlook hotel is jack's own little hell because he is always resurrected, becomes an alcoholic, possibly abuses his kid(s), becomes the caretaker of the overlook, loses his mind, kills his family-although not this time around because of danny's psychic powers, and dies of a horrible death, only to be resurrected again
Fascinating discussion guys. I cant wait for the documentary. Kubrick is definetely the most original filmmaker in cinema. Nobody even comes close to what he has done. His movies are for the ages.
NO. He admits stealing a lot from Ophuls, Lynch, Ozu, and others
they showed this for 1 day at cineworld 1 day only . cant beleive it
Ok! Now you really have me geeking out and wanting the see this movie.
if you're referring to the film he made getting him ousted, I've seen the movie and it's a great comic twist, he also wrote a response to the article. Anyway, none of that matters to me, the guy is amazing at breaking down subliminal themes in films, especially Kubrick.
Actually, the owners of the hotel wanted Kubrick to change the room # from 217 to 237 because they were afraid no one would want to stay in it. The hotel has no room 237 which is why they were ok with that number.
Good stuff. Thanks for posting!
Oh we did go to the Moon alright, it just wasnt broadcast...They played us Kubricks version instead. But our guys were certainly up there, doing god knows what.
Audio is perfect for me.
agreed, Ager really has some great insight to this and many other kubrick movies. these guys are dancing around every question.
Ager is OK but clearly selling some absurd theories for money.
Thank you, Netflix!! :) Room 237 doesn't pussyfoot around with the standard questions like "omg, what's that blob by the elevator?" I have to say, having seen Room 237 twice now, I've started to look at Vivian's short "documentary" and I'm convinced it was made early in filming to test out the technique of forward/reverse viewing. Kubrick's duality of man nonsense actually comes alive before your eyes - no pretenses - all thanks to the young Kubrick fans remixing and re-representing the master
Wendy is reading "Catcher in the rye" while sitting with Danny who's eating a sandwich.
Would definitely like to see 237.
I discovered my own quirk about THE SHINING: Jack's VW car is yellow because serial killer Ted Bundy's VW was also yellow.
Cheers for the info. Much appreciated. I knew it was shown in the UK during October but that was pretty much all I knew. Not much to go on sadly. I will keep my eyes peeled for On Demand. Thanks again
that's your opinion and that's cool, everyone's entitled to have one. whatever resonates with you.
Kubrick movies have so much details that it makes me doubt that he thought all this through
To all of the people saying this documentary is bs, just remember Kubrick was much, much smarter than all of you. Even smarter than the people trying to figure out the film. I'm not saying I agree or disagree with the theories in Room 237, I find them interesting. But keep in mind that anything is possible.
I think its half and half. Hidden messages but which ones is hard to say. Will do a video on this soon.
around 30 minutes in these guys start talking about Jack reading a 1978 Playgirl in an early scene. The interviewer says maybe something on the cover eludes to a theme in the Shining. ive never noticed it so i searched for it and thought I found the right one. A 1978 cover with John Ritter and some chick on it. One article is called "Why Men Chase Women Who Run". HAHA no kidding. but its not the correct cover. agh.
It was a playgirl mag not a playboy.
You must mean "radio documentary."
👏👏👏👍
Great documentary! I saw it at the ICA in London!
Could not disagree more. Kubrick is a truly astounding visionary...he managed to improve upon the novel of the shining in so many ways. Many of the shots in this film equal those from 2001 (if you watch 2001 and cannot see Kubrick's talent, then I really doubt your ability to critically assess art).
Jay Weidner cracked it. Deal done. I dont think there's much to add to Kubrick's Odyssey part 1, I just wonder how the hell he figured it out!
Kubrick didn't create the film effects in his movies himself. For "2001", for example, he had more than 20 special effects experts working for him, among them Dougas Trumbull, who also worked on "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Blade Runner" and who also directed "Silent Running" and "Brainstorm".
Kubrick created beautiful sceneries and directed people. He didn't create special effects or direct any Apollo landings.
I think the idea is that it’s the same team on 2001 and the moon landing stagings-a creative economic carte blanche and a twofer
@@thehanker5347 Why would it be ”the same team” on 2001 and NASAs moonlandings? Any special reason?
@@YDDES As I remember it the same techniques were used. But who knows…
@@thehanker5347 Supidity. In 2001 the Lunar landskape was either models or glasspaintings. In the real landnings, the astronauts walked around in a real landscape. You haven’t given any reasons for Why You believe NASA has lied about the Lunar landnings. You watch the conspiracy sites too much, but they are all different. Some say the astronauts never left Earth orbit, while others say they never even got into space. 😂
That actually might be the reason the Overlook was able to get into Jack's head so easily.
Sorry to the filmmakers, I meant Room 237.
Good call.
Overlook is a Baal Temple (July 4th "Ball"). In the final photo in one of the open doors is the head of a demon
as in, Shelley wants to protect Danny from this? I haven't read 'Catcher (etc)' :s . but this does sound like a correct analogy. Cheers
Just saw The Shining Code, about an hour ago. Very disappointed that nobody is allowed to post their opinions. What a shame. A horrible shame.
Let's get together to comingle as soon as possible.
does any one eles notice the carpet pattern where danny is sitting looks like a stick figure with the toy cars as arms and how theres a stick figure on either side of danny like they're the twins and hes playing with with them?
It's implied in the film that it's something passed down through genetics, so perhaps.
The difference in time is done purposely; that is not Jack at the bar, but his father. Just like the difference between Delbert and Charles Grady; it's all about abuse cycles.
I assume the Del/C thing like Jack - is a Jack clone. Perhaps through the mirrors. Good catch - most people don't notice the "two" Gradys
the same carpet pattern is in sid's house in toy story...
Once invoked He requires human sacrifices
Not a documentary THIS IS PEOPLE DRIBBLING CRAP.
You seem to offer no other justification for saying "Kubrick was a lousy Director" than just that he doesn't seem to take the most amount of care in continuity or trying to avoid being able to see cameras/shadows. If that's what you think makes a director any good or not, you should probably start watching something other than movies- technical show-reels maybe? They'd probably take more care in that side of filmmaking rather than the creative side. Nicholson was incredible in this movie.
I have money waiting to buy this. Where is it? I don't have and don't want cable, so please make it available through Amazon, Vudu, Netflix, iTunes or anything else other than cable. Thanks.
It was available from IFC - I assumed they replay it. You should be able to go to their website
love the film and your doc thank you
Yes.
We've got all kinds of different futures laid out for you and it's up to your decision making. Who will you be and when?
Clara, where is your reducepoops side? With your Russell in Valley Forge?
Where is your buzzpoops? How about your ElasticPoopsRez and nightpoopss? And your pater?
CHECKOUT THE SHINING CODE IT WILL ANSWER ALL YOUR QUESTIONS.
Where can I watch this Doc?
Once Baal inside the hotel is housed in room 237 (SET inverted, another name for the devil), there appears as a young and old woman, because a demon is an infernal spirit, can acquire any form in our dimension
Does Jack or Wendy have the ability to shine?
Clara, I'm home.
That court case was fun though. Remember? ;)
Not sure what the deal is with this film's distro, but it's disappointing and frustrating not being able to find it. Not exactly helping fans of the original, who you would think were the target audience for this film. The studio and film maker have to be losing out as well as the fans? I don't get it. I hope all becomes clear before long and something is sorted.
It got picked up by IFC - here in the States - don't know about other countries
forget jimmynortons comment. The audio is 10/10 . He probably needs a hearing aid.
How much do You actually know about how to create film effects (I know how every effects shot in "2001", "Star Wars" and all pre CGI movies were made)?
And, how much do You know about space flight-, radiocommunication- and TV transmitting- technology? I've worked with the latter and studied the first for decades.
Kubrick filmed no Apollo landings. If You believe so, please tell me how he filmed that vast landscape with sunlight, black sky and vacuum on Earth.
Oh for fuck's sake X 2.
There are people out there really buying in to this shit?
Baal is the God of storms by that invocation rituals are not made in summer, it is in winter. When Jack is looking petrified upwards, it is because this seeing what has invoked, Baal that came with the storm, Through the window

Your obsession with this Brian fellow is bordering on the obsessive old bean. Do you get treatment for your OCD? Jim O'Reilly and Micky McEvoy, 2 self hating Irish men filling their days with threats on YT, brings a tear to your eye!
237 is Set inverted, Set is an Egyptian god of Evil (in reality they were all evil) SET corresponds to Baal or Baalzebub or Beelzebub, it appears in the Bible when the Jews tell Christ if he cast out the demons with the power of Beelzebub . It's the devil. He arrived with the blizzard with his entourage, Jack invoked them with the typewriter mantra. The demon stayed in room 237. They require sacrifices from Jack
luna is moon in spanish
It could mean that he was showing his beliefs though. Not actually involved.
hahaha no, your misinterupting my analysis for rudeness. i was turned off by the lack of confidence in the man's response. concluding to lack of character of my liking. as i watched more of the video, i realized my analysis was correct, as they are rather unsure of themselves among answers and untidy as 'experts'.
but on that note, i do appreciate ur reply, and the effort of indulgence and interest into such symbolical meanings. personaly would do same with movies such as 'fight club' or such.
YMS brought me here
*during and after '2001'.
That's exactly right. Well done poopy.
Why?
Nonsense. If anything, that court case improved your life!
Ah the irony of accidentally clicking the vote up thumb as I was about to troll you for your scared/sacred typo...
PS Are you still at pre-school ?
Come play with us, Jimi.
The child, Danny has no powers, is another sobrenatural spirit , like BAAL, but it is not evil. This spirit entered him when his father caused him severe traumas
Jon Ronson did another great film about Kubrick not his films but his thousands of boxes. Called "Kubricks Boxes" Ronson was asked to go through Kubrick Barn's by his family after his death.
Like all Ronson its (Them,Men who stare at Goats) funny and poignant.
Damn, every nut in cyberspace has shown up in this discussion!
Lol the minotaur theory is almost stupid. Especially with that woman's complete blindness. The skier does not look like a minotaur his legs just looks a little small with the angle. Without that it almost falls apart.
Kubrick made a film, Killer's Kiss for yes Minotaur Productions. You may be right but there is evidence deeper meanings are in the film. Will do a vid on this soon.
I tend not to take Ager seriously after finding out stuff like his previous political activity - google "Rob Ager UKIP" to see what sort of person he really is.
LOL Never took ager seriously. But he does good research in SOME cases. But in other cases is just playing "expert" for money
"MR ONO"
uh... Yeah, that gets the pass. I'll allow it.
"NO"
nah, not good enough.
Great party, isn't it Clara?
first 30 seconds:
"its called 'room 237' right?"
"yea...uhh...thats the working title"
-_- i cant watch this.
eric, you're right about the youtube thing but come on we're talking a horror book. topiary animals are no more stupid than zombies or vampires.
Hello my friend!
Jay weidner is a little radical!
You're not getting trolled. Look up randomlaughingman.
What the hell does the fucking title have to do with it?
Yeah something like that.
