What a find!--when my dad was young, he loved both Russ Columbo and the Boswell Sisters (especially Connee)

Talk about a summit meeting: Russ Columbo and Constance Bennett, along with Connee, Vet and Martha Boswell. We still are not worthy. Absolute, utter perfection.

Here's a cool technical note. Note the aspect ratio is almost 1:1. Also note in the opening credits, they're off center. This is because the sound track was not originally on the filmstrip. It was a separate 16" record that was mounted on the back of the projector. The turntable was geared directly to the projector and it would be synchronized.
Later on new technologies allowed the sound tracks on the film, eliminating the need for phonograph records, which ultimately would wear out and break or get lost. This is why we have many old films without soundtracks or sound without film.
When updating old films to optical sound tracks, there wasn't room for them so a few millimeters of left side of the screen frame was sacrificed to accommodate the sound.
It's good this was done. If not we might be watching this film silent!

My Grandfather in law made an early short musical film using that technique in the UK, but God knows what happened to it, I tried searching online but its no doubt lost to history😢

As to the Boswell Sisters trying to sound coloured, see Laurie Stras, "White Face, Black Voice: Race, Gender, and Region in the Music of the Boswell Sisters" (2007).

The chorus does tippy-tapping in the coy, girly manner which thankfully was about to be blown away by Eleanor Powell. She disliked it so much that her contract with MGM stipulated she would never have to wear little white socks.

The Boswell Sisters are trying to sound ever so COLOURED!

ummm, they were born and raised in New Orleans, so.....also, Ella Fitzgerald said Connie Boswell was her ONLY influence as a singer, so I guess they succeeded

@@illbebad People tried to imitate the Boswell sisters from the Andrew Sisters, Ella and more. They are sui generis.

The Boswell family grew up and lived in New Orleans. It's perfectly normal for them to have sounded as they did.
