    Whenever I think Marineford I think Impel Down. Impel Down is honestly one of the most underrated arcs in the Manga. A masterful fast-paced build up that keeps you hooked from beginning to end just to pay off at Marineford. Impel Down is to Marineford what Water Seven is to Enies Lobby

Many memorable moments like Luffy's encounter with Blackbeard, Bon-chan's sacrifice, Magellan's character, and the great escape from the prison. It is definitely an underrated arc, Magellan was a great antagonist.

    I feel that "hype" is an often overlooked/unappreciated part of storytelling. There is a narrative importance in hype (as well as vibe for that matter) that I think sets the tone in a series that makes it stand out

    • @emperorofinception3571
      @emperorofinception3571 Před 3 lety +7

      Hype can be as much of a problem as it is a help. Too much hype can cause expectations beyond what the author may in fact be able to deliver. Too much hype can also cause fans to make assumptions about what the author will do that the author may not necessarily promise. In Whole Cake arc, fans saw the "year of Sanji" as a sign that he would fight, abandon his principles, and a bunch of other things. Having seen such things in the past prove a disappointment, I just assumed it meant that he would play an important part in the events and he certainly did that. Regarding Naruto, I love that anime because it helped me at a time that i needed it most. That being said, I will agree that what the author did with Madara and Kaguya was a mistake. I wouldn't have minded so much if he had allowed Madara to use the full extent of his powers and abilities and then introduced her, but I also wouldn't have minded if she hadn't appeared here at all. To quote a game over in a game I have played "that's it? All that buildup and he just falls over like he's made of sticks". That was a really big mistake, if he was going to build something up for that long then the least he could do is make Madara worth the wait. Thankfully we got the final battle of Naruto vs Sasuke which I had been waiting for so at least that expectation was met. Please keep in mind these are merely my personal opinions, I mean no offense to anyone here.

      @Jordan Vance If Whitebeard never went to Marineford, and Sengoku didn't try to execute Ace, none of them would have played into Blackbeard's hands. But who was Blackbeard to them? Some upstart traitor with no name. The Marines lost more than they gained from Ace's execution. They lost a Fleet Admiral after Kong's response to the Level 6 Breakout, Garp resigned, Aokiji resigned after Sakazuki won, they lost two of the Shichibukai (Jinbe and Gecko Moria), and they lost the balance they worked hard to maintain. Now instead of having to deal with Whitebeard, who was easier to deal with, they have to deal with Blackbeard, who is more ambitious and more violent compared to the old captain.

    @EayuProuxm Před 3 lety +29

    One of my favorite things about this arc is how stressed out Sengoku was in the lead up to the war. Usually, for an authority figure, a fight is portrayed as a break from their vital but tedious everyday job stress. For eg. Naruto, once he becomes Hokage, the daily acts of the job are his stress, and fights are a welcome break from that.
    But for Sengoku, this coming war itself is the stress! From Blackbeard being found at Impel Down to losing contact with his ships that are tracing Whitebeard, everything about it was just stressful for him.
    Props to Oda for doing that.

    Don’t forget, I think the personal weight of this war, Ace’s life, also played some roll. Ace was a favorite character, brother to the main character, someone we only so far got a small glimpse of. I don’t really know about anybody else but In the back of my mind, Luffy was going to save Ace. The more the story progressed though, the more unsure if this fact I was.
    The moment Luffy does save though is such an amazing and memorable moment and made me feel just so much joy. For sure this whole arc was building towards this and everyone is going to safely retreat and the war would be considered a win for the pirates. THEN, Ace turns back, he saves Luffy, he dies. This whole arc, everything Luffy did to save Ace, every sacrifice made to save Ace and Ace is gone. Died in Luffy’s arms.
    The whole build up from the moment Ace is captured to the War, it all came crashing down on me as a reader. It was crazy. I was destroyed.
    For me the pain was not over, when we get Luffy and Ace’s backstory afterwards, it really does kill me a little inside. I feel like if it was a different writer, they would have put Ace’s backstory sometime before the the war, before his death, to make us love him more and see how much he means to Luffy. But no, he puts the backstory after Ace’s death with us knowing he’s gone now.
    Okay I’m sad and depressed now. Sorry this was so long if you made it to the end.

      Oda made a great decision to not include Ace's backstory before Marineford. I had pretty much 0 reason to believe he will die and if Oda showed his backstory to make us sympathise with him more, I might have been sadder when Ace died but less shocked. But by delaying the backstory and playing with the readers expectations, he made the experience much better. When Luffy uncuffed Ace, there was not a single part of me that even considered the fact that Ace would die. But then, it suddenly happened and I was absolutely baffled to the core. It was so surprising that even after I saw Akainu burning a huge hole through Ace, I refused to believe he would die but alas in the next chapter he died, and Luffy, the character filled to the brim with hope and never ending belief in himself, broke. Then when I saw Luffy in Amazon Lily, for the first time in more than 500 chapters, doubting himself by saying he can't become the pirate king, the emotions started coming up as I remembered the very same Luffy in the past, several times boldly state that he is the man who will become pirate king without a shimmer of a doubt. Then I saw Ace's backstory ending with Sabo's death and Ace saying he won't die. That was the emotional pay off for me.

    • @scandalfop2093

      @Ridwon Ahmad The world gvt. isn't that much stronger than an Emperor. If 2 of them ever got together and agreed on a way to split the world into 2, the gvt. wouldn't stand a chance.
      Of course, there is the 'new weapons that will make the Warlords useless' but we don't know how effective those would be against the true powerhouses of the world. I mean, I doubt anything man made could do any sort of damage whatsoever to Big Mom, Kaido or even Shanks, hell even Luffy is probably past that point by now, soo...
      You gotta remember, an Emperor isn't going to go to war just by himself. He'll have allies, subordinates, even entire kingdoms backing him up. One of the reason Whitebeard lost so badly was that he couldn't and probably wouldn't bring all of his allies to help him. Can you imagine how many islands/kingdoms he had under his flag-protection. Probably dozens. If even a few of them had a few powerful characters each and thousands strong armies, you can only imagine how much destruction he could cause if he was the one who planned the war and not his enemies.
      Also, he couldn't even use the full might of his devil fruits because he would just end up killing his own men. A devil fruit that can destroy the world only created like 2 big waves the entire war. Meh...

    Just recently finishing up Alabasta again, I would argue that Crocodile is the first hints that Luffy was going to eventually be very outside his depth. His defeat of Crocoboy is framed as a triumphant fluke. Then Luffy is Enel's weakness. Lucci is a pure brawl that pushes Luffy in much the same way as Arlong but at the next level. Moria takes the whole team, the second hint at Luffy actually being a small fry. Then the events of SA through Marineford.

    • @soulscribe_h
      @soulscribe_h Před 3 lety +1

      Some argue that Crocodile was put too early in the story, and while I tend to agree with it, Morj makes me think that it was also in Oda's plans in the long run. Crocodile pretty much killed Luffy twice and only lost because of his massive ego and arrogance. Same with Enel + Luffy being his natural counter

      @Jordan Vance true. One thing that the Blackbeard vs Ace fight showed us (and not for the first time) is how confident a logia user can get after years of not having to experience how does it feel to take serious damage with a normal body, and guys like Crocodile and Enel suffered from the same mistake.
      I like how Whitebeard, although he wasn't a logia, gave 0 fucks when Blackbeard cancelled his fruit and immediately owned him with his bisento.

    About 2 months ago i decided to read One Piece and as always I had been binge reading it for weeks, then came the end of Sabaody and I really felt that intensity and hype all around MF arc. I was reading at the time 20 chapters at most in one day but when I began reading Impel Down i couldn't stop i just wanted to see and know more and more about what was about to happen and this is what really makes this arc beautiful in my opinion. When I was done (chapter 580) it was 5:30 am in the morning. And i found that i almost read 100 chapter that day! Damn. My first thought was "This, is how you write a war. what good story telling is all about, is learning. the reason enies lobby and marineford are so insanely good is we got to learn firsthand, what the potential of the world of one piece is like, in enies lobby luffy had to evolve physically to stand a chance to beat the world as we saw it then, and in marineford we just saw how far ahead the world was still, how many secrets and powerful characters there are still that luffy cant even begin to beat yet, and the journey on is the strawhats discovering those secrets and evolving again to beat the insane challenges, and we as readers are learning all that, we are really addicted at learning more about the world of one piece, thats all that matters and the reason why one piece is so successful
    if learning at school was half as good and entertaining as learning in one piece is, we would all be astronauts wouldnt we
    but i think slowly we are going to get there, already theres research in gamification of learning

    What I love most about Marineford are Ace’s last words and Whitebeard telling to the whole world that the One Piece does exist 😭😭.
    Edit:
    Sabaody Archipelago is where Luffy realized he’s not strong enough to protect his crew, hence be a true leader in his eyes, along with the whole crew feeling useless to their captain. So, many reasons why I love Sabaody, but the decision each individual takes after the split is just amazing, all for their captain who they know can be clumsy and goofy, but yet strong and reliable as a pirate. The man who once saved them and now the man they chose to follow as the future Pirate King.

      A friend of mine, new to the story, was complaining about the "lack of consequences" to the Straw Hats after everything they had done before Sabaody and in retrospective, with this video, I'm sure that that was Oda's intent, to make us think that Luffy would somehow win and get away with his actions again just because he's the protagonist. Starting with Sabaody (not counting Amazon Lily), Luffy took nothing but L's and/or had to run most of the time, from Kizaru and Kuma till in the war itself.

    Don't gloss over Don Krieg man, he legit pushed Luffy to his LIMIT. Arlong didn't push him that far, only Krieg did, before they hit the Grand Line. Though you could also argue that Kuro pushed him as far if not further than Arlong considering all the cuts and bleeding.
