  • In this video, Bob Paulinski, Master of Wine discusses the new wine releases from Costco under the Kirkland Signature label. He tastes through and provides buying advice on six wines, plus one additional wine that is not under the Kirkland Signature label.
    The wines are all under $20 per bottle, some under $10. As is typical with Costco, both prices and availability may vary by market. The wines in this video were purchased in Northern California.
    2023 Kirkland Signature Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand $7.49
    Pale color, green tinge, fresh, bright, zesty, lively acidity, medium intensity, crisp and clean. I've had many better Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, but the value is here is very good. Crowd pleaser. Good availability.
    2022 Kirkland Signature Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina $6.99
    One of the my favorite Kirkland wines for value from last year. The new release is also a great value. Medium deep color, purple hue, good ripe fruit character, well made, nicely balanced. A wine to buy by the case. Good availability.
    2021 Kirkland Signature Bordeaux Superieur, France $6.99
    This is a so-so vintage for red Bordeaux. Medium depth of color, muted, light aroma, well made, but a simple, one dimensional wine. There are better options for a value red wine in this video. Seasonal, limited availability.
    2019 Kirkland Signature Rioja Reserva, Spain $7.99
    30 months in oak, six months in bottle prior to release. Medium deep red, showing some slight oxidation, pretty aromatics, smokey oak, good weight, solid complexity. Mature and ready to drink now. This is a solid bargain, especially for those that prefer subtle, nuanced wines. Limited availability.
    2020 Kirkland Signature St Julien, Bordeaux, France $17.99
    76% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, not a typically for the Left Bank of Bordeaux. Good depth of color, round, decent weight, black fruit, cedar, very refined, soft styled red. A good wine from start to finish, there are better Bordeaux on the market from less prestigious appellations for the same money. Limited availability.
    2021 Kirkland Signature Gigondas, Rhone, France $13.99
    Grab it while you can! A textbook southern Rhone red, made from mostly Grenache with some Syrah and Mourvedre. Medium deep red, wonderful aroma, red and black fruit, savory, superbly balanced, a complete wine from start to finish. Limited availability.
    2021 Headline Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma, CA $12.99 on promotion through April 28, 2024.
    Classic Dry Creek Zin, medium deep color, red raspberry amount with spicy, savory note, full, robust, big styled red.

    Thank you for doing the video! I went out and purchased four of your recommendations - the 2021 Gigondas, the 2021 Headline Zinfandel (and also the Cabernet Sauvignon), the Rioja Reserva and the Argentinian Malbec. The only one I was disappointed with was the Gigondas. It lacked the body and balance of similar Rhone blends from 2021. The surprise for me was the wonderful Headline Cabernet Sauvignon. Headline is a new winery for me. It was fairly fruit forward but with nice tannins for its young age. I will put this one down for another year or so. Thank you for the recommendations!

    Just finished a three evening enjoyment of a Kirkland 2019 Rioja. Amazing value that I would recommend to my wine friends. Buying and cellaring wines for nearly 5 decades, finding an inexpensive quality wines to share and recommend to others is where I find enjoyment. But I did also pick up a few bottles of 2020 Lynch-Bages at Costco just to keep some classics on hand.

      I’m glad you found my channel. The use of French oak reaches much of the wine world. French oak is sourced from the center of the country. Highly regulated. The grain tends to be super tight. It leads to a very subtle oak character. It’s largely become the industry standard.

    Would the odd growing pattern of Zinfandel be tricky to pick as well to get the perfect grapes for the wine?

    • @bobpaulinskimasterofwine
      @bobpaulinskimasterofwine  Před 2 měsíci

      First, the odd growing pattern is not a given. It depends on the vintage, age of the vines and vineyard management. Second, the odd growing pattern is not necessarily a negative. Many Zin will have a ripe, sometimes jammy character from the ripe and over ripe fruit. Some underripe fruit will lend acidity to counter the riper fruit. It’s all about balance.

I'm waiting for the latest vintages of Gigondas and Bordeaux Superieur so I can taste them and compare with your notes later on, but they're really far back (even the Bdx Sup which sells quite well). I've been hesitant to attach scores to wines in my videos. A score represents a snapshot in time, as the wine aging, it'll change, plus many variables comes into play. A score also provides little value without a broader context. There's also a hefty dose of subjectivity. For me, the Gigondas and Zin were the top two wines in the video. ‘22 Malbec, no change
      ‘21 Bordeaux Superieur, slightly more aroma, but negligible
      ‘19 Rioja Res, it drinks well, from the moments it’s opened, holds together well with aeration
      ‘20 St Julien, improved aroma, more expressive and pronounced
      ‘21 Gigondas, very good right out of the gate, gains more range and intensity with aeration.
      ‘21 Zin, develops well with aeration, gains intensity, the wine was a bit softer as well.

      Thanks…. I am a big proponent of carafing especially screw tops and young wines. I’m in San Diego and the Costco in Carlsbad usually has all the “good stuff” because corporate HQ is close. We use the CA Chardonnay as our house wine 🍷

    I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment of the Kirkland Bordeaux, but we will have to agree to differ on the Rioja (BTW, the "j" is pronounced like the "ch" in the Scottish loch, please don't perpetuate that mispronunciation). I am no MW, but I have been a serious student of wines of the Iberian peninsula for decades. Palates vary, sometimes quite a lot, but I was bitterly disappointed in this Kirkland Rioja Reserva. Weak nose, little taste, decent tannin and dry, but no finish. Just watery and uninteresting IMO. And, I bought a case.....

    • @bobpaulinskimasterofwine
      @bobpaulinskimasterofwine  Před 2 měsíci

      Yes, palates do vary. I respect all opinions. I popped a second bottle of the Rioja a couple of days after making the video. I’m staying with my opinion, it’s a solid wine for the money. Have you tried more than one bottle? Is it possible your first bottle was corked? As for the pronunciation, I’ll try to do better 😂 Thank you for commenting. Cheers 🍷
