    An epic trip, thanks for sharing and for all the cool educational information. Can't wait to see them at Aqualand. The build in Japan would be incredible, can't wait to see what you come up with.

    Actually working with Shintaro would be an amazing opportunity for all those buyers to see the fish living in a real system

      Because that doesn’t occur in nature and a lot of that rock was cast concrete

    Another great video!

    This was awesome! It’d be SO COOL to do a build at Shintaro!!

    Thanks for sharing! Are you allowed to take samples of the water and bottom soil so you can see the breakdown of the different elements that make up the mud pond?

      I’m sure I can if I asked,
      Maybe on my next trip I can bring the appropriate instruments for testing?

    • @lawrenberghanson4401

      That would be awesome! Seeing a glimpse of the environment underneath that surface that contributes to the health of the koi would be fantastic!

    Ed, you speak of the substrate necessary for growth and health. Why do a clean out? Only to need a substitute bicteria.

    • @TheBarefootedGardener
      @TheBarefootedGardener Před rokem

      Could be a couple things. Usually if aquatic plants don’t get cut back, poor water circulation which allows leaves and other detritus fall to the bottom of the pond will make muck; that can be anaerobic. You don’t want excessive amounts of nutrients in the water.
      The second reason is people like “clean” looking ponds, as if they were finished last week, and the clean out makes it look like that. But it does set back the filter, to what degree, that’s past my knowledge (for now) Of course if I missed anything, I’m sure Ed will elaborate.

      Natural Ecosystems(ponds, streams, rivers) will be flushed through heavy rains and snowmelt, we’re just flushing the system periodically, I have features that will never need cleaning and others that are heavily stocked that will require yearly flushing…..

    Ed, we have wild ( human release) koi in the Saginaw Bay near my house. Some HUG mosters

    That garden is nothing special actually. There are many great gardens all over Japan. Maybe you want to check out bonsai for inspiration. Come back to Japan soon.
