Don't forget to control the indoor environment quality, ie the IEQ. That includes thermal comfort, ie heating, and cooling. The air quality, Ie a ventilation system. But almost most importantly would be moisture control inside the structure with a dehumidification system! Water is the number one killer of buildings, hence why the flashing and installation details are so critical. I know you haven't got into building science on the channel, but make sure you take a look at that before starting.

This is really impressive. I must say I can't totally agree with the "anyone can do this" message 😅 let me qualify. Maybe the actual building part worked, but you brought up some details in the planning, especially around heat retention that laypeople just wouldn't be familiar with or consider. Still massive respect for pulling this off. Lived in the countryside where everyone I know built a shed and it's exciting to see a true professional have a go at it.

I just built a home office in my backyard over the last 3 months - wish I had had this series for inspiration first, but I'm really excited to see how yours turns out!! I did a similar split use for office space and bike/ tool storage. Fortunately where I am in the US, there's no height restriction, but I did have to pour a concrete foundation which ended up about half of the overall cost.
Does your current shed have electricity or internet running to it? I had to dig a trench to bury electrical and internet cables. I love that you're including the budget aspect of this as well since that was something I always ran into - great idea to do the fixed window, I should have done that! It would be super cool to chat about the process with you and I can't wait to see what you do next!

So the base should be 15cm above the ground to avoid water splashing up onto it? What if you build a small splash guard around the outside to protect against it? Essentially a waterproof skirting board for the outside of the building... or have I missed a key feature something along the way?

Why wasn't a dual pitched roof or other chosen?
3:19 / 3:29 shows that you have a max of 4 m overall height to work with such a design.
The head room might not be enough in this case, but within the main part of the structure you would have sufficient headroom to play with.

It’s lovely watching this. My partner and I, a services engineer and illustrator respectively, built my studio and garden store in lockdown. It felt daunting to start but breaking it down into stages made it possible. We were joining to an existing garage and needed planning permission and listed buildings consent. We designed in autocad and sketch up also. And gained loads of skills from construction to laying tiles in roofs. It’s in my main channel if you want to see? Gregory Makes. I’ll find this comment and link it there for you. We’re in Ashford, kent if you want to pop over and see.

Hi Daniel. Just a thought but would you consider something like a lightweight aluminium structure? The cost upswing from the timber would be noticeable for sure but you could easily manage a 3m Roof span with 100x50x6 aluminium RHS Members with centres of 400mm that you are utilising (roughly speaking from experience, would need a sanity check). At floor level you could opt for a light gauge galv steel frame to sit directly onto the slab with a minimal increase in height with support shims, so you could claw back some head height from the floor deck also. I also appreciate that beyond the cost factors there are environmental considerations etc that you may not want to increase the carbon footprint of the build by using such materials. Failing that you could just consider increasing the density of centres at the roof for your timber joists alone and likely claw back some of the roof depth (although without looking it seems you are already circa 400mm centres down the long span of the building so that may not be viable). Finally, if you do not mind having a primary support member running centrally within the room you could reduce the joist profile size substantially with the trade off that you would have one large central beam within the room volume itself running from above the glazing back to the dividing wall between the office and storage area. Needless to say these walls would need more consideration for their load bearing capacity etc. Just a few ideas for your ruminate on anyway! Best of luck with the project, look forward to seeing the end result.

Thought about strengthening the roof? Having a stairway up gives access back to the footprint and covering the roof with an upgraded material allows for wear and tear. I’m abuzz about this as I just submitted by dissertation for QS, and I got time on my hands.

Daniel, quick question. As a designer of spaces, how do you deal with proper measurements and scaling?
I'm not a professional designer but when I do have ideas for my room, I always tend to underestimate or overestimate the size of furnitures relative to the space. I end up going back and forth, keep measuring things just to make sure that the space is well-utilized but is also open enough to have breathing space.
