    That was a lot of information all at once, but when you break it down and cover things individually like you did, I wasn't so lost.
    I have a tiny Harbor Freight system that I need to expand a little to run my motorhome thar I live in off grid. But I don't need 1,000 's of watts, just a few 100's.
    I like to see what others are using and see how it works & if needed, how customer service works for my future homestead.
    Thank you for taking it slow and piece by piece to make it more understandable. I know some info but I like to learn more a little AR a time. I'll probably revisit this video a few times in the future, and send others to check it out too.
    Sam & Angela. Great video.

    Looking really good so far. If you’re going restart the inverter again make sure to have the inverter breaker on before you turn the batteries on. That way the batteries can go through their precharge sequence first. It would be really sad to blow the capacitors out of the inverter before you have a chance to really get things going. Good job on this one.

    I've got a 15kW Enphase system (panels and microinverters) and 20kW worth of batteries. Double wide mobile home, heat pump, aerobic septic, well. When the temps get down in the 30s that 20kW of batteries don't get us through the night.
    It's a lot harder to go 100% off grid than you think, unless you are heating with propane or wood. I'd need to about double my battery capacity, and increase my panel production either by adding panels or optimizing their placement, or both. In the winter panel production decreases some.

    Hi Sam, looks great, I like your ground mount setup. Gave me some good ideas for a smaller version for a cabin setup. One thing I would recommend is to get some plastic grommets to thread on the top of your metal electrical knockouts in the Lux inverter. It’s code and helps reduce any chafing of the wiring coming into the inverter . See you on your next video.

    Almost all connections on inverters, batteries, and DC breakers have a specified torque. I got a 1/4 inch torque ratchet set and a digital torque screw driver. Some have to be tighter then you think and others not as tight. With the right tool you do not have to guess.

    In case anyone is interested. On sunny cold days I power my heat pump with my inverter. I had to add parallel inverters and increase my inverter's capacity to it's maximum of 16 KW in order to supply the inrush current needed to start the heat pump's compressor. Note that you can not parallel inverters unless they were designed to do so or you will have a dead short, which means you may have to replace your inverter to get one with higher output. The metering in my inverter showed over 300 amps on startup but I am sure it was much higher because the metering was not designed to measure transient current. So don't expect to run any electrical motor on a 12KW inverter that has a high inrush current even though the rated power of the motor may be well below the rated capacity of the inverter.

  • @Madsci-zy8wm

    Great video but the next time you choose the components for an off grid inverter, I would suggest spending less money on your battery system (All Chinese made, UL certified LFP battery packs offer pretty much the same quality, performance and life expectancy) and spending a little more money on a higher quality, safer, true heavy duty, higher peak power, transformer based low frequency inverter, instead of the low peak power, shorter lived, high frequency inverter that you chose for this installation. A hybrid,12kW high frequency inverter doesn't need to be built into such a big, heavy metal box such as this. All of the electronics could easily be built into a metal box, half this size. This Chinese manufacturer just wants to give the visual impression that this is large heavy duty inverter when it's actually not. This unit only offers a 1.67 X surge capacity when most low cost high frequency inverter offer a 2X surge capacity. And a low frequency inverter offers almost twice this inverter's surge capacity ar 3X. Surge capacity important for starting and running high inductance loads such as AC units, microwaves, refrigerators and power tools.

  • @clydedecker765
    @clydedecker765 Před 6 měsíci

    Sam, I've watched several "off-grid" set ups and the one thing that seems glossed over is the battery voltage selection. Some work with 24V some work with 12V and as inn your case, 48V.. In specific, Red Poppy is 24V, Acorn to Arabella is combo 12V and 24V, as does SV Seeker, Mountain Maple is 48V I think... In all cases there are varying degrees of 120V AC and some 240V AC. Let me guess its the initial investment cost for choosing 24V vs 48V? Or is it the specific Inverter/battery combo?

    Are you going to use a switch like a backup generator switch and use your grid connection as a backup when/if needed? I have a 10kw grid tied system, and want to add batteries and controllers to cover the peak use higher priced hours and peak conumption fees. Also want to upgrade our ground mount so we can change the N/S angle winter and summer to get the best summer performance diring AC season.

    • @sam-and-angela
      @sam-and-angela  Před 6 měsíci

      Yes, we're completely on grid right now (home + workshop buildings). Our home has a low number of circuits to change over so I'll be installing a Reliance Controls Pro/Tran 2 transfer switch box in our home. The 10 slot box will handle everything in our home minus clothes dryer, stove, and water heater. I considered doing a critical loads panel, but available space inside is very low -- our hands are kind of tied on what we could really fit inside our mobile home on panels and hardware. I'll be sure to explain this and more in the video showing the transfer switch install.
