Upgraded laptop RAM and CPU:
CPU: AMD Turion X2 TL-66 2.3ghz Dual Core
RAM: 4GB
Could not see a way to upgrade the graphics card on this laptop it seems like it's not removable. If you know it can be done please let me know in the comments section bellow.
New Processor has a higher TDP than the old one so it would tend to overheat if the thermal paste is not applied correctly or if the thermal compound is not very good quality.
Final thermal paste used, Arctic Silver 5.
Bios download from Acer - search for Aspire - 5100
Bios version 3.13 was the last one.

@@silvamar233 for bios, check the Acer support website. Search for your model exactly and see in download section.
Oh I had one of those things.... I made it last for EVER. It paid for itself. Taking it apart is A JOB. I threw all kinds of upgrades into it. Got it to do Windows 7 with all drivers. I added that ridiculous little bluetooth module that was supposed to come with these that everybody said would never work in it... You press that switch up front it would holler "No Bluetooth Device" Well worth it. So you actually got the thing to take the TL-66? I thought about this but never got to it. People said the BIOS would not take it. We had to find a registry entry for that darn DVD optical drive though. To do the 4GB x64 we had to go into the BIOS and set the video to 256MB or it would stay at a black screen. Will these go to 8GB or above? Oh well. Thanks for posting memory lane!!!
4gb is max i tried, won't take 8gb.

I didn't try at all.
Sometimes it does black screen and long hdd flashes but its rare and a restart fixes it.
It started when I added more ram.
Ssd is a much better upgrade and I tried with a IDE adapter to sata /m.4 but it didn't boot from it so I left it.
@@IONHowTo They had an undocumented *quirk*. To get the 4GB to work you have to increase that memory usage in the BIOS to 256. I put the bluetooth chip in. FUN....

Ar putea fi un canal care descurajează cumpărarea de calculatoare noi, când poți să le îmbunătățești pe cele vechi- un fel de anti-consumism, sau mai clar, un fel mai înțelept de a-ți folosi banii/timpul generând și încredere în propria persoană.

CZcams plays great, you can even use the Android tv version and works fine

Look on the screen for hints of what to press.
I'd press all F buttons and del until it works.

Very nice video! I have the same laptop and I'm in a current upgrade mode of it. I want to upgrade the processor with the TL-64/66 or 68 versions, but do I have to necessarily update the BIOS version? I bouth a 2GB RAM last week and the guy from the PC store advised me to change the processor, but didn't mentioned nothing 'bout the BIOS. So, any thoughts about this topic? I read some material in the internet, but as always ... it's a 50/50 situation.

It's always a good idea to have the latest bios, the process is not difficult and even though it might work with the older bioses(depends on your version) it would work better with the latest.
It's easier to update the bios now than to open it again and swap the cpu back.
You know the usual, full battery, no power failure if battery is dead, the usual :)
It's a 2.0 version. Now I see you added a link for the BIOS. I might try it!
Just make sure your laptop is the same or get the bios for your laptop.

The TL 68 is almost a ghost I found one seller on Alibaba and he wants $108 US for it. The TL-66 is cheaper but not by much and varies in price on ebay lowest I saw was $48 the highest was $84

I don't know, on wikipedia they usually have nice comparison tables. You should use the latest/strongest cpu that is confirmed to work in your laptop.
Also keep in mind, TDP gets higher with more power and cooling is limited so about 35w tdp to max 40w is the limit here. The one I installed was the best price to performance cpu I could find then. Get that one.

We used it a few times and it feels like a normal laptop now. :) the laptop doesn’t have sata as far as I know and we’re not storing files on it. SSD speed would be nice though :D

The hdd in mine is PATA and I even got a msata to pata adapter to make it work.
Dont wanna buy a pata ssd.
Msata in sata usb adapter works fine in windows as an extra disk even in bios its there but... with the ide adapter it starts and then windows freezes during startup.
Tried gparted cloning, reinstall...
Nothing worked.
Maybe the adapter is bad. Maybe i'll try later. 😅

Oi Lucas, tenho um acer 5100 que infelizmente deu pau na bga, guardei o guerreiro!! Não sei se vou ajudar, mas a freq. de barramento da MB entre processador e memoria é de 667Mhz, embora o processador seja de 800Mhz. Da mesma forma que o processador trabalha normalmente, memorias de 800Mhz também irão trabalhar. Comentava-se nos tempos do barramento 775 que num cenário 800-667-800, poderia haver uma melhor performance do que tudo em 667, não creio nisso. De qualquer maneira, uma memória de 800Mhz irá trabalhar nesse circuito a 80% de sua velocidade máxima, o que pode torná-la mais estável e durável.

I have an Acer Aspire 5113WLMi laptop, bios firmware version 2.70, I want to flash version 3.13 as you have in the video, I tried from under Windows, but because of the x64 version it does not work in any way, it remains to flash only from under DOS, formatted the USB flash drive for FreeDOS, threw the file phlash16.exe (firmware program) and the cw51313.rom file (firmware file), started, the laptop made a squeak, and a red sign appeared that there was some kind of problem with the firmware file, and the firmware script did not even start. I used both the program and the firmware file from the official acer website, there it is assumed that you can update the BIOS from under Windows, but only if you have an x32 bit system. I really want to know how you asked for the bios, I understand that the video is already 4 years old, but please remember.
All info is in the video but your model is different so you need to make sure you have the right file for your bios.
This going wrong can make your laptop unusable.

I'm more worried about the hard drive problem. It uses an pata/ide connection. Nobody makes pata hard drives anymore. What do we do about that?
Check the other comments, someone says they were able to use pata to boot and m.2 for os but I didn't try that myself so can't say if it works or not.

I remember the price on this cpu was very cheap too, try a better one if it's still at dirt-cheap level. :)

Infelizmente deu o famoso problema de falha em soldas BGA. Estudo se vale a pena o conserto, tanto pesquisando a troca da placa MB, quanto o reballing, mas está difícil um técnico que aceite fazer o serviço, até porque o custo pode chegar a metade de um notebook novo, com ddr 4, socket FCBGA1356, sata III, usb 3.1, etc.
Não gosto de admitir mas acho que tenho um valor sentimental nele!! KKK
Enfim, gostaria de saber se ficou satisfeito com o upgrade!! Pois eu encontrei uma MB com a GPU dedicada, mas precisaria desse dissipador do chip de vídeo que o seu ostenta!! Eu não sei se daria certo adaptar o meu cooler, então o certo é trocar o cooler.
Também tenho interesse no upgrade do CPU, caso não esteja utilizando, que tal fazermos negócio?

The Laptop is old and we only use it for CZcams, web browsing and simple workstation tasks.
Comparing before and after the RAM and CPU upgrade, the difference really is noticeable.
It's pretty much usable like a modern medium range laptop.
SSD would really make it even faster but the MB got only a PATA controller and don't want to go so far and put a PCI-X Sata controller in there.
There are problems with drivers of that Radeon x1300 graphics card. They don't support it and are pushing to throw the old hardware away....
Had to use hacked drivers to make it work with windows 10 but it works eventually.
I'd say if it gets to BGA reballing, it's just not worth the money. If you could do it for fun it is but paying half the money of a new notebook? Not really worth it :)
Won't be selling the old CPU or current one but there are many super cheap on eBay.
Why is TL-66? Its TDP is 35 watts, and the MK-36 has 31.
Wouldn't it be better to take the TL-60 of the first revision?
It was what I believed was best, you can use any of the series even the more expensive ones.
I had a TL60... Ran kinda hot. I don't think you can go higher than the 66 but I could be wrong.

Checked now 1080p 60fps cpu 99-100% won’t play smoothly.
Plays unedited nikon d810 1080p 30fps high quality video smoothly but not 60fps.
From CZcams, It plays ok up to 720p 30fps.
The screen resolution is 1280x800.
No 60fps! 😅

run a memtest just to be sure.
If memtest is ok, try to re-apply thermal paste and make sure the 4 screws of rhe cpu cooler are tightened enough (not too much).
Could also remove the cpu and check the pins and make sure after putting it back, the cpu locking screw should have the screwdriver tab parallel with the cpu. It should be tight and locked.
Could also try a linux distribution on a usb stick just to make sure its not a windows problem.

Guido Utsunomiya mine was overheating with the seller's paste but was still working just at reduced speed.
The heat coming out of the laptop will be more than what it was with the old processor.
Make sure you put the cpu cooler properly and it has good contact with the cpu.
Windows can be 7 32bit due to graphics card driver issues.
But you should try testing with Linux see if that works or gives more info.
How you understood, that this processor compatible ? Is there any table, can you give link ?
It was more about the price than compatibility.
This CPU is the same socket and slightly higher TDP than the old one.
It was a risk buying it and trying this.
The better ones were more expensive than I was willing to risk.
From what I remember there is a TL-68 that could work but I didn’t try it and I’m not sure i remember it right.
The TDP difference should not be too much because the existing cooling needs to handle the new one.
Just get a dual core but same AMD code Turion X2 TL-XX
There are websites that let you compare specs of any processor, look it up.
I’d recommend this one any day unless it became more expensive in the meantime. 😅

@@jacquelineshawdeyoung6918 You can run Windows 10 with 4GB. It's not ideal, but the operating system will only take about half of that, leaving the other half for programs. Just don't open dozens of browser tabs, and try not to run too many programs at the same time.
Also, a good OS to put on older laptops is Linux. Kubuntu is my favorite...looks beautiful also. Linux has much less overhead than Windows, often running in less than 1GB RAM. It's also faster, and does not require the extra overhead of virus/malware software.

Chiar nu stiam ce sa fac cu aceasta vechitura.
A fot tot timpul inutitizabil, in mare parte din cauza HDD-ului de 5400 RPM IDE, ce se misca execrabil. Nu merge pe el SSD cu adaptor M.Sata. BIOS il vede, dar Linux si Windows nu il vad, deci chiar si cu acest upgrade de procesor, tot ca o rasnita se misca si suna. Pacat de el :( Frumos tutorial, totusi.

Salut Corneliu, trebuie sa faci un stick usb cu Dos bootabil. Copiezi fisierul pt. update si il pornesti de acolo dupa boot de pe stick.

L-am facut acum multi ani. Din cate imi aduc aminte e un program de la HP care face disc bootabil pentru Win98.
Folosesc mereu acelasi stick.
Cred ca o sa fac un video nou cu asta.
Trebuie sa fie Win98 startup disk, parca asa ii zicea. 😅

@@guidoutsunomiya3849 manow ainda estou tentando fazer o up mesmo dps de um ano,comprei um processador dual core e fiz a atualizaçao de bios e mesmo com esse processador nao deu video,no meu caso ainda nao tenho 4gb de memoria somente os 1gb originais,pode ser que por conta disso nao tenha ligado o note ou o processador esteja ruim,uso o windows 7 ultimate

I can't remember if it works with that but TDP should not be much higher so there is no need to change cooling.
Checked now, only difference is better speed for 68 so you could try it if price is not much higher
