    Only in South Korea does the headline of the killer's perfect CSAT score come before his admission of murder. What is wrong with Korea Now and South Korean culture that a test score is of more importance and interest than the fact that he killed a person??!!! May she rest in peace and may her family find their way to overcome this horrific tragedy.

      Maybe because it shows how dedicated his family was to his success and was offered every chance to become what they would consider an example to society: medical doctor, surgeon, lawyer, etc. So the blame falls on him, not the family, not society (poverty, orphan, etc). It also speaks of the immense pressure for years of studying potentially 12 to 15 hrs a day and having less time to socialise and relax.

    • @erinlee5936
      @erinlee5936 Před 17 dny +21

      The CSAT score also speaks on the South Korean culture, which emphasizes academic excellence above all to get a good job with a high salary and a high status in society.

      Murder is common, like it or not. But the striking point in this case is the person who committed it. The score emphasises he was no random hobo on the streets or some uneducated loser. He was a person who could have contributed greatly to society. He was destined for success and yet he threw it all away. A wasted potential. It sets an example of people who, even after all their education, never learn how to be a human.

    • @chibiusa
      @chibiusa Před 15 dny

      You're misinterpreting the point of the headline. His perfect score is only mentioned to point out that he had everything going for him, so it was stupid of him to throw away his bright future. Plus, the news is certainly not "appreciating" his intelligence; it's doing the opposite by shaming him, though it would be hard to pick up on if you don't understand Korean culture. To Koreans, a person who works so hard to get a perfect score on a difficult exam is generally assumed to be a law-abiding citizen (a goody two-shoes type) and not the type that would ever commit such a heinous act. His perfect score also automatically gives insight that he grew up in a good environment with supportive parents who made sure he would succeed in life. He doesn't fit the description of the average murderer, which is why the news is pointing it out.
      Also, just FYI, many countries/cultures emphasize superficiality but in different ways.
