  • One of my favourite Walton episodes. In this scene Lyle Thomason, played wonderfully by Dennis Kort, is a college student genius who scandalises the devout Baptist family with his views on religion. Very funny.

I was raised in an abusive home. I started watching when it first came out. I never get tired of either. I'm 67 now and I still watch them both.

It’s funny when they do a tight 3 shot of Elizabeth, Jim-Bob and Ben it looks like they are a mile away from Michael Learned but when they do a wide shot they are sitting together so closely. Makes you wonder if she was even there when they did the 3 shot of the kids. It must take a lot of time doing these table scenes between the master shot, tight shot & closeups of each character. All that said, that was a great scene. Grandma was beside herself.

    Quite an outstanding scene. An episode set right in the heart of that deeply conservative and religious, god-fearing era. The episode actually highlighted Lyle's lack of social skills (probably Autistic). I wouldn't say they were attempting to show "good arguments" regarding atheism. Rather, Lyle's inability to "read the crowd" so to speak. John Boy's epilogue: "Lyle Thomason came back to stay with us several more times, and we enjoyed his visits very much. He did indeed prove to be a decent, kind, and very likable human being. But what pleased us even more, was that after that weekend, Lyle spent almost all of his free time visiting his own parents."

    John-boy is correct. Noone can prove God exists or not. Unless YOU were there and witnessed an event, everything MUST be taken on faith. This applies to creationism and evolutionism. Grandma Walton is also correct. Some things must be taken on FAITH. Every idea and belief and viewpoint, every worldview comes down to acceptance on Faith.

    • @naejimba
      @naejimba Před 3 lety +7

      No, Lyle is correct. That would be trying to prove a negative, which is impossible unless said negative is logically contradicting (for instance, we can say with certainty that a four sided triangle does not exist, since triangles by definition have only three sides). Faith is simply believing something without evidence, in the case of a supernatural claim one in which it would be impossible to prove. Supernatural phenomena is something which would be outside of natural phenomena; if we had a way to observe something that was considered supernatural, it by definition would be a part of natural phenomena. This is an important distinction, since if someone demanded empirical evidence for a supernatural claim, that would be the logical fallacy known as a category error. If something supernatural were to exist, there would be no way to meaningfully observe it... meaning there can be no evidence and therefore no valid reason to believe the claim.
      As for evolution, the mechanism by which it takes place has been observed empirically. How humans have changed the crops we eat over time or altered the appearances of dogs through breeding is proof that such a mechanism exists. Given a long enough period of time, and environmental pressures, speciation occurs at the point in which the differences become so great that the two groups could no longer mate and produce viable offspring. There are also a number of instances of observed speciation (talk origins has a page listing them). We are also able to look at DNA to see both the differences and similarities between species, and compare that to what we find in the fossil record. The fact that both of these line up is strong empirical evidence to the validity of the theory. There is empirical evidence for evolution, but there is none to support creationism... in fact, all of the available evidence shows the latter to be incorrect.
      In any event, one who makes a claim would carry the burden of proof. Empirical evidence is the most reliable form of evidence we have, so this is why one claim is considered valid while the other is not. One has a wealth of empirical evidence to support it, and as of yet no empirical evidence exists that disproves it. The other has no empirical evidence to support it, contains embedded within it claim of supernatural phenomena which would be impossible to meaningfully observe (meaning impossible to prove or disprove), and the empirical evidence we do have disproves it. Not only is there no valid reason to believe the latter, the evidence we have that is at odds with it is a valid reason to be skeptical. The most logical position to hold is to abstain from belief until evidence exists... if it is impossible to obtain any form of evidence, there can be no valid reason to believe. To have faith is to believe without evidence, or in some cases in spite of the evidence. If I am honest I do not think this is a virtue. It is quite possible to live your entire life without faith... you can simply say you don't know, or consider the probability of a claim. No one enjoys uncertainty, but I feel it is the most honest way to live.

      @@agemoth "all you have is evidence of changes between individual kinds, not changing from one kind of thing to another, eg changing from a fish to a man, for instance."
      First, a fish wouldn't "change" into a man. These are very small changes that naturally occur over incredible lengths of time and environmental pressures determine which characteristics make any individual more or less likely to survive and reproduce. As I said previously, there are a number of instances of observed speciation and talk origins has a page listing them.
      www.talkorigins.org/faqs/faq-speciation.html
      It covers the topic in an objective manner and lists all relevant studies. In biology, the definition of species is a reproductive community, thus, if there is enough variation between two groups to the point where they can no longer interbreed and produce viable offspring, then speciation has occurred. It would take many such changes over a length of time far beyond our lifespan for an individual to personally witness such distinction as you allude to. Because of the length of time, to witness something as you describe would be impossible since it would be longer than our own species has been around. However, the process of speciation has been observed a number of times, and the method through which such changes can occur has been demonstrated.
      There are multiple forms of evidence that further support this, from DNA to the fossil record. There are any other number of instances where we can prove things occur that take too long for an individual to directly occur... such as how stars or planets form, continental drift in plate plate tectonics, the movement of glaciers, the formation of mountains, or how erosion can create something like the Grand Canyon, and so on. One doesn't need to directly observe the Grand Canyon being formed, since the process of erosion has been demonstrated, and there is supporting evidence in the various rock layers which can be dated and match up with other similar layers elsewhere in the world. It is the evidence of such processes, and the processes themselves being demonstrated to exist that proves it, not direct observation of it being formed.

    • @naejimba
      @naejimba Před 2 lety

      @TheDay HeMade "People did not manufacture God." That's not really the claim I was interested in, but for the sake of argument, there are a large number of religions from all over the world, most having one or more gods. Since they cannot all be true, this means that at the very least most of them were created by people as ways to explain phenomena around them they did not understand or to answer questions they did not have answers for. I'm certainly open to the possibility of a god being real, but as of yet have no valid reason to believe one exists. You should also be open to the possibility of any or all gods being created by humans... whatever particular god you believe in would be the exception if it were to be real.
      "Just because he is incapable of proving it to be so does not make his conclusion that it isn't so a fact."
      This, again, would be trying to prove a negative. Also, the burden of proof is on the one making the claim. There are many things that cannot be proven; you could imagine any idea you wished and there would be no way to disprove its existence unless it is logically contradicting. That in and of itself is not a good reason to believe in its existence though; some sort of evidence would need to be provided if you expected anyone else to believe in it.
      "And John Boy is wrong as well, because the proof of a Living Creator is all around us but it is the short sighted among us who cannot see this because they cannot push their pencils and pens around it."
      Where then is said evidence? You can't just claim it is there without providing it and then insult other people by calling them short sighted. You would have the burden of proof in this instance, and to place an insult in place of an actual argument would be an ad hominem attack. Furthermore, what I can gather from the comment about not being able to "push their pencils and pens around it" I take it your conception of god is supernatural? If that is the case, then it would be impossible to prove its existence, since the act of proving it would place it in the realm of natural phenomena which can be observed. That would also mean that you, nor anyone else, would be able to observe it. These two concepts are not compatible with one another and you are not being logically consistent.
      "No one has to prove there's a God."
      No, of course not... but if you want other people to believe in it or at least take the idea seriously then yes, you would. I can admit the character depicted in the show was rude in his response. Can you admit that it is rude to be upset with someone for not believing in something you do, especially when no evidence is provided? It would be on the person who wants others to believe to present a valid reason to believe.
      "The proof is evident."
      No, it is not. Otherwise no one on the planet would ever be having this discussion, there would be no other religions, and there would be no non believers.
      "If you don't believe there is a God then it's up to you to humble yourself and search whether it is true."
      ... and I've found no valid reason to justify belief. That doesn't seem to be enough for many people though, and they seem upset at me for doing that very thing.
      "The fact is that there are MANY highly intelligent human beings who believe in Creationism and a Creator."
      How intelligent someone is who believes in a concept is not a valid argument for said concept. Also, you could just as easily find examples of intelligent people who believe bizarre things, whether it is Isaac Newton practicing alchemy or David Icke's shapeshifting reptilians.
      "And the more you actually study in your field--whatever that field may be--the more you will come up against the fact that there is no possible escape from the reality of God Almighty and this realm, this matrix we call our reality, is fashioned for this purpose, that Man might reach for Him."
      I don't find this to be the case, and the fact that there are any number of people who are either not religious or do not believe in your particular god shows this not to be the case. Again, if it was so evident no one would have this type of conversation.
      "Every person has faith. We all have the choice in what we decide to invest that faith. For some it's Science, for some it's Self. But those who are truly wise will place their faith in the One who is over all."
      No, this is not true. Faith is to believe something without evidence. I can think something is probable or improbable, but it is evidence that shapes my belief and not the other way around. I do not have "faith" in science; the only reason I believe in anything that comes from it is that they provide evidence and have a stringent method by which said evidence is obtained. There are some who have a religious like zeal for it, but I'm not counted among them. There are also a number of crisis in modern science (including deliberate tampering of data such as "p hacking") which can make results or conclusions incorrect. Beyond this, there are any number of things that they have gotten wrong and are corrected when new evidence presents itself. The best way to describe it is it allows us the best possible picture that we currently have; certainly nothing set in stone as any new discovery could change much of what we think we know.
      So, no, I do not have "faith" in science, myself, or anything else for that matter. My beliefs are shaped by the current evidence I have and always subject to change in light of new evidence. I admit when I don't know something, and there is more that any one individual doesn't know than what they do. People don't want to admit this, as uncertainty is uncomfortable, but it is the most honest way to live (plus there is that humility you mentioned).
      Also, why is it "wise" to believe in something without any evidence to support it? I find the opposite to be the case that it is folly. Certainly most modern conceptions of a "god" are centered around positive concepts and treating others well, but there are just as many examples of cruelty done in the name of such beliefs. I'm assuming you are christian based on this conversation, and if so, you can find examples of this within your own holy text. If you were of another religion, you could be off killing non believers and this concept of "faith" would allow you to feel wonderful about doing terrible things. I would much rather use reason and empathy to determine which actions are moral or immoral, and no, I don't think I would be better off to advocate moral responsibilities to some ideology; religious or secular makes no difference. I also am willing to bet that you yourself use reason and empathy to determine what actions are moral or immoral in your everyday life, and that you do not simply blindly do whatever an ancient text commands. So how then is this concept of faith considered a virtue?
      "and Lyle was wrong about his having no reason to go to church. I think his lack of table manners or social grace is a good enough reason."
      There are many places one could learn manners and social graces... in fact the entire point in the show of being sent to stay at their house was for this reason.
