    Former President Trump went on for quite awhile in his interview with Tucker Carlson about how China now controls the Panama Canal, if not out right owns it and how we made a bad mistake in selling to Panama for $1. Your take?

    • @panamawave
      @panamawave  Před 11 měsíci +1

      My take is simple. There is not one shred of evidence supporting any of this for the very simple reason that neither is true. Nothing was sold to anyone for $1. Ridiculous. The US did not own the Canal, it rented the space and couldn't sell it. As for the Chinese, they have never had anything to do with the operation of the Canal in any way, shape, form, or manner. Apparently contrary to the opinion of some people, we are not stupid, ignorant, or fools, and neither is the shipping business. Having worked for a shipping business in the US, I can assure you they would hear about this long before you did and they would protest loudly.
      If you do visit Panama someday, be sure to ask any Panamanian old or young, rich or poor, PhD or high-school drop-out if the Chinese have anything to do with the operation of the Panama Canal. They will look at you oddly but will set you straight in minutes. I certainly don't blame you for asking but the former President Trump needs better information.

      @@panamawave Actually I have visted Panama in 2014, I believe, and had the pleasure of meeting you in person, while on a tour provided by Jackie. I trust your opinion, and knew I could get a straight answer, out of you.

      @larryhanson6674 Well, Larry, that was an easy one to answer! Gosh, nine years ago? Ah, the days of my youth! I was still (barely) in my 60s.

    Well Bob very good report. Looking forward to having coffee with you sometime in mid September, my return date tô wonderful Panamá. CBS had a report on water shortages for the canal and what a crock of misinformation. I sent photos of me flying in a small airplane over the new and old canal showing what’s it like. There will alway be fresh water for the canal. Keep up the good work.

    Okidoki!! Bob: Thanks for the information. I will put on my patience hat again and wait for more maps. If I heard correctly before there is coming a video with some location info like you had not to long ago. You gave the circles like maybe six and spoke about what was there and I believe you are working on another video update on that… Sorry I am kinda tired and hope I am making sense. And which way, thanks as always. Hasta pronto. ❤ I need a siesta!!

      I watched that video again and it was worth a second watch and someday I will watch it another time for full measure; there is a ton of great information in that one video alone. I am well pleased with what you do for us who have an interest in Panamá. Thanks!!

    Can I ask why the US wants to do this with a factory for chips in Panama? I'm curious as to why. It sounds like it will be good for the people but why Panama? Is it because of the canal or something else? Thx for the great report! Coming in October for a check it out visit and we are super excited!

    • @panamawave
      @panamawave  Před 11 měsíci

      In a word, logistics. We are positioned to deliver the chips anywhere in the world efficiently as we are a primary air and sea transportation hub that continues to grow. For example, Brazil has a population 50 times greater than ours, but our sea ports do more business than theirs. In addition, our road infrastructure connects all of the sea and air ports, as well as the storage and trans-shipment facilities at the world's second-largest SEZ (special economic zone, formerly free trade zone). A new SEZ for the use of this facility is a real possibility as we already have about two dozen additional SEZs for specific purposes. Finally, we are a stable democracy with a long history of being a link in the global supply chain. Stability counts for a lot.

    Great summary. I look forward to reading your report.
    The media here is on about the drought again and the increased lineups and reduced draught in the canal. Is that having an impact on the day-to-day? I remember a few years ago a drought hit Herrera hard and they ended culling a lot of livestock. Have things like that been happing? (Mefia here only talks about the canal.)

    • @panamawave
      @panamawave  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Nothing yet on a day-to-day, but I do laundry less frequently and try not to overdo use of water. I keep an eye on my a/c and when I'm comfortable, I cut it off. But this is all voluntary. If things get tight as they have in the past, actions will be taken. For example, government offices will open early and close early to reduce water use from air conditioning. A max temp for stores may be set. Remember, much of our electricity if hydro-electric. That's clean power but it takes water so we just have to hope the rains get heavier.

    Can anybody suggest a website that is English based about Panama news? Google translate is ok but didn’t know if there was an English based site I was not aware of. TIA.

    • @panamawave
      @panamawave  Před 11 měsíci

      In the past, there was (for a time in the first decade of the 21st) a newspaper published in English and also on the Web by one of Panama's major news publishers, but that folded for lack of readers apparently. There are several small sites or sections of larger sites today, but many have a commercial or political bias that upsets some people, so I don't make recommendations anymore. I think many people get their news from Facebook groups these days.
