Americans basically only eat grain fed beef. It's weird. Since I started working in the caribbean I've only been able to eat imported meat from America. Idk what it is about it, but the steaks at the grocery store are like $30 and taste flavourless. It's definitely the grain fed stuff. Also the meat is a different colour, it's not as dark. Like the meat is a paler red/pink colour vs the steaks in the UK that look more burgundy/darker red.
It depends on the area. In VA you can find cheap lamb- not sure why but maybe it's just more popular? But I've lived in several other states in the North and South where lamb is harder to find and is more expensive

Ive found lamb chops at walmart and more lamb selections at whole foods (too expensive). I actually prefer the gamier taste but dont have it often since its expensive
You could probably buy directly from a farmer and get a lamb processed by meat processing facility. Just make sure to have a big enough freezer or go in together with friends/family. We did that for half a cow. Hoping to do that next for pork with local farmers. I should go see if some of the local sheep farmers sell lamb. You can often find them online or at local farmer’s markets.
The gamey flavor is one of the reasons lamb is my favorite meat. It's way more subtle than other game meats like venison, but you still get a bit of the funk.
People just generally don't commonly eat it in the US, but before you go 🤓☝️ "uhm ashkully" yes you are the expectation congratulations, therefore they don't know what to do with it or never really think about wanting to have it. I never had it growing up so I never wanted to or cared to have it, but had it once and it's fine I mean I'm not going out of my way to find it, though if someone cooks it I'll finish it.
Lambs not really a gamey meat tho, gamey meats tend to be hunted, hence game, meanwhile lamb has to be farmed. “Gamey” is just a descriptor that essentially boils down to less fatty when comparing the same species, IE farmed duck vs shot duck
@@allthebanter9316 Lamb isn't a gamey as some meats--mutton is much more so, but there's still a definite "funky" element you'll get whenever eating any sheep or goat. For myself i'm used to it, and a lot of ethnic cuisines that cook a lot of goats and sheep know how to mask some of that with potent herbs and spices. Still, I would say that Lamb and Mutton are still "gamier" than some wild meats like Venison or Elk.

I love it...more than goat but eat a lot of that to. It's an easy and very cost effective livestock option for meat on small acreage. So we eat a lot seasonally even though typically it's only available around Easter/Passover Holidays in commercial grocery stores. Because we ranch privately it's a much bigger seasonal ingredient just like garden produce.
If you dislike the gaminess, then you can also let the lamb “marinate” in milk overnight (we do it often in greece) After that pad it dry and use it as wanted. It won’t smell or taste gamie 😊

I do that when i shoot grouse, i soak it in Milk for 1-2 hours, i still like the taste to be a little "stronger" or gamier. Season to flavour and throw it on the grill, baste it all the way through cooking with butter. Amazing.
Lamb is a staple in my household. I went to restaurant depot yesterday and I bought a whole Australian lamb and a 50lb of lamb shank box. The gaminess isn’t a problem. Just soak it in a water, salt, and vinegar solution for couple of hours, wash it with cold water, pat it dry, and it’s ready to cook.
Here in Australia . Cut them into lamb cutlets ( here we buy them as cutlets). Season with salt, pepper and rosemary dry or fresh and olive oil then onto the bbq. Absolutely delicious.
I agree, just a few ingredients are all you need to roast a great lamb. Alternatively in the oven with white wine, rosemary, bay leaves, juniper and thyme. 👌
I get lamp chops at Costco. They come in a pack of 8, usually under $20. I just use s & p, then sear on all sides(they're about 2" thick), then I'll throw in some rosemary & butter to baste.

That looks amazing! I'll definitely be trying your recipe, thanks for sharing.
im an American whose favorite meat is lamb problem is it's expensive. and thanks for tips
It’s better to find a farmer who sells whole or half lambs it’s cheaper that way if you’re eating it often. Even better if you have friends that would want some haha
@@Rose225. why thank you very much I'll try to keep that advice in mind.
It's not really THAT expensive tbh and Lamb is my second favorite after Beef
yeah I can get wagyu ribeye for cheaper than lamb shanks 😂
@@Weimerica8841 what??? 🤔🤔 Where? I found lamb to be cheaper than I thought
As someone from the U.K., lamb is banging and why the hell wouldn’t you want it grass fed
Right!?
Yeah grass-fed is superior 🌞
Americans basically only eat grain fed beef. It's weird. Since I started working in the caribbean I've only been able to eat imported meat from America. Idk what it is about it, but the steaks at the grocery store are like $30 and taste flavourless. It's definitely the grain fed stuff. Also the meat is a different colour, it's not as dark. Like the meat is a paler red/pink colour vs the steaks in the UK that look more burgundy/darker red.
Exactly it's the best way.
I mean it’s all an opinion neither of them are objectively better. I’m sure if you grew up eating grain fed you wouldn’t like grass fed either
I don't have all of that. Now redo it with just a skillet, rice cooker and blender. 😭
used to work in a restaurant that served rack of lamb, they used rosemary in the crust and it was an amazing combination of flavors.

It depends on the area. In VA you can find cheap lamb- not sure why but maybe it's just more popular? But I've lived in several other states in the North and South where lamb is harder to find and is more expensive
The grass fed taste is literally why people would eat lamb instead of beef or something.
Most Americans don't like lamb because it tastes like a big squirrell. So gamey and tough even when cooked "right" as people say
I tried Lamb at a friend's house and I was surprised how much I liked it.

Lamb actually IS my favorite. And I'm from the US. Although, its literally impossible to find in the stores near me or for a good price so it's a rare delicacy for me
Ive found lamb chops at walmart and more lamb selections at whole foods (too expensive). I actually prefer the gamier taste but dont have it often since its expensive
Costco, Sams Club, or Trader Joes
You could probably buy directly from a farmer and get a lamb processed by meat processing facility. Just make sure to have a big enough freezer or go in together with friends/family.
We did that for half a cow. Hoping to do that next for pork with local farmers. I should go see if some of the local sheep farmers sell lamb. You can often find them online or at local farmer’s markets.
Yep

As a South African I'm so confused about lamb being called gamey. I'm sure the Australians and people from New Zealand are also confused.
Like you don’t know the term “gamey”? Or you don’t think it tastes off? It tastes to me, like a barnyard smells…it’s pungent and hard to stomach.
I’m quite surprised too. I’d understand maybe if this was about mutton or goat, but lamb? Gamey?!
I’m from the uk and I’d say our lamb just tastes like a beef mixed with pork just abit more juicy, fatty and salty than regular beef
I'm welsh and same here
Lamb tastes like im sitting in the barn and smelling the animals. Yuk!
The gamey flavor is one of the reasons lamb is my favorite meat. It's way more subtle than other game meats like venison, but you still get a bit of the funk.
Me my husband & our 3 boys have eaten Lamb since 1984!!! I make a Leg of Lamb for Easter each year! We love Lamb Burgers as well!!!!❤😊

Lamb isnt gamey when you cook it with a ton of garlic. No one likes gameyness except people with stank breath and stank tastebuds
@@King-SherrySpeak for yourself
Which by the way can't be done.
I love lamb in barbacoa, it’s really expensive to make though so I mostly have it when I travel to Mexico.
I love lamb that actually tastes like LAMB. Most lamb sold in the USA tastes like nothing at all now, that New Zealand "gamey" taste is how lamb is supposed to taste and was how lamb tasted when I was a kid in the 1950s & 1960s.

It's an easy and very cost effective livestock option for meat on small acreage.
So we eat a lot seasonally even though typically it's only available around Easter/Passover Holidays in commercial grocery stores.
Because we ranch privately it's a much bigger seasonal ingredient just like garden produce.
If you dislike the gaminess, then you can also let the lamb “marinate” in milk overnight (we do it often in greece)
After that pad it dry and use it as wanted.
It won’t smell or taste gamie 😊
@@miguelsilva9085 I wouldn’t call it stink, but I’m sure you know what I mean.

Cheers, and as OP posted, enjoy lamb 🐑
I marinated my lamb in milk, not overnight but an hour and a half cause I was ready to eat, and it got rid of the gamie taste
