    Hi mate, just stumbled on this channel, great stuff. I wish more people were interested in Chinese history, it's not easy to find that many good quality videos or documentaries like this.
    I'd love to see a piece on Sui, I think its prosperity is often overlooked in favour of the Tang golden age.

    Coming from Musou games I just discover the history of ancient China and especially the period of the three kingdoms.

    I’ve always been curious if there was anything at all to Lu Bu’s story? In most games he’s always a very useful but easily swayed general.

      I would say Fa Zheng was far more important to Liu Bei during his campaigns.

    after the defeat of Lu Bu, Liu Bei could served Cao Cao and be one of his generals. But his idealism, his dream to someday become the Emperor and Cao's disrespect toward the Han Emperor caused him to betray Cao Cao.

      AGS363 beyond what the above said he was a very inspiring leader, often drinking and pillaging right alongside his troops in celebration and generously giving out rewards to those under his command.

    Talk about snakepit politics. Is there a single one of these guys who could be considered at all trustworthy? For that matter, was loyalty of this sort considered a social norm among the powerful at the time? These guys seem awfully quick to forgive each other's betrayals and take former enemies into their service. Can anyone provide insight? I'm honestly curious.
    Also, amazing work as always, HoC! I love how you're refining your visual style. :)

      Thank you ! About your question, I think Sun Zi's Art of War mentions how you can enlist enemy generals and agents by paying them more and treating them better than their previous employer. Historical China is very different than Japan in that matter, as it was often normal to change allegiance. In more stable periods of Imperial China however, defecting was more frowned upon.

    Happy New Year and thanks for the great video. I wonder why Liu Bei is so often portrayed as a hero? He lost as much as he won and more importantly he was quite partial to betraying patrons.

      I think the reason Liu Bei is often seen as a hero is because he was well liked by the general population, often being easy on taxes and laws

      @@History_of_China Yet his nemesis Cao Cao, brought stability to the North, was generous to his subordinates and had a much greater success in military terms, yet he is vilified in popular culture.

      @@426mak thanks to the brilliant Chinese Manchu Emperors and Manchu chinese scholars who favoured Liu Bei, while actively demonized Cao Cao back during the Qing (清)Dynasty; it is said Cao Cao was as opportunistic as Dong Zhuo, according to Qianlong text, Cao Cao 😈 incarnate. A saying in Chinese : “说曹操,曹操就到” translates to Speak of Cao Cao, Cao Cao appears. Edit: speak of the devil, he appears.

    2:05 this right here.
    Liu Bei listed for power like most warlords of the time. He is not the virtuous, do-no-wrong leader that so many ROTK fanboys believe. The real Liu Bei was just a cunning, opportunistic throne seeker. He betrayed or took advantage of almost everyone he came in contact with.
    Sun Quan and Cao Cao were actually really good leaders in their prime; funny how many people hold Liu Bei in such high regard but view Cao Cao and Sun Quan as evil or traitorous.

      I agree with you. In my opinion, I would say Cao Cao achieved power through logic, Liu Bei trough charm, and Sun Quan through the sense of duty.

      Liu Bei didn’t commit one of the biggest genocides in Chinese history or buried surrendered troops alive. That might have something to do with it. Ya hear that, Cao Cao?

      @@memesa2312 Cao Cao was not an evil man, he was very virtuous to his officers, subordinates and some adversaries like Xu Shu, and Sima Yi. Cao Cao implemented many rice land reform policies that favoured peasantry owning lands. However, during ChiBi he made very arrogant foolish decisions which caused alot of grief amongst the common folk governed population.

      That was because Luo Guanzhong wrote Romance of the Three Kingdoms during the Ming Dynasty in which Liu Bei was deemed as the legitimate successor to the Han Dynasty. He based it on folklore and Chinese operas which supported Liu Bei and disliked Cao Cao. Besides, Luo Guanzhong idolised Zhuge Liang, Liu Bei's advisor.

      Didn't cao cao commits genocide left and right? Did Liu Bei ever commit genocide on such a scale? Liu Bei having ambition as a young man is not a great basis to determine his overall character.

    Another great one! Thank you! Remarkably similar to the "Romance". I think Liu Bei was somewhat of a screw up. Do you have a piece on Cao Cao? I read that in reality he was a pretty good leader, not to mention that delicious breaded chicken dish🙂

      lmao breaded chicken! if you're referring to General Tso's chicken, that dish was named after a Qing dynasty general :) cao cao does have a completely different chicken dish named after him though! ancient Chinese leaders must've really liked chicken

      It's something called Pinyin, literally translating to 'spelling sounds.' There have been romanizations of Mandarin Chinese for centuries, however the current official form was made in 1958 by the Chinese govt.
      It mostly resembles English pronunciation except for the following differences:
      Q = 'ch'
      X = 'sh'
      A = 'ah'
      I = 'ee'
      E = 'eh' or 'er'

    @THOC why start your history segmant with the 3 kingdoms , surely you could start with a Han Emperor Like Wudi , or Guangwu ? Even better from Qin Shi Huang . just my opinion mate .

    I personally think Lui Bei wasn't a good man. He claimed that he descended from the imperial line which I think he just deceived everyone.
