- Hey everyone! Quite a long video this time, with about 18 minutes of riding footage. It’s mostly cycle path cruising, with some mud and offroad stuff sprinkled in there.
Hope you enjoy!

Hey everyone, hope you enjoy the video! Bit of a re-build on a bike I’ve had for a bit so not much of a restoration, more of a repurpose!
Have a great day, take care and happy riding 🤙❤️
I have the same bike, but an '87. Ditched the steel seat post, bars, and stem for used Nitto stuff. Installed 1.5" slicks, a Brooks B-67, some deep cleaning and lube, and it's one of the most comfortable and reliable bikes I have ever owned in 40 years. Love the BioPace chainrings on the hills around here, too. Flattens 'em right out.
Sold off my touring bikes for these things long ago. They're just stronger all around. Get one that's tall enough and you can't tell where a touring bike ends and a MTB begins. Early MTBs were actually made for "mountain touring' and have the same frame geometry as tourers, as well as many of them having all the rack and bottles bosses, too.
I avoid the later MTBs with straight tube forks. Instant road shock transfer to the hands. Get the earlier ones with the long rake tapered touring forks.
City bars on old 3x MTBs is my jam. I have a '97ish Bianchi Lynx that I did this to about a year ago and it just rides the dream.
Man, your style in bikes is terrific. I always enjoy seeing what combo of parts you can come up with. I've done maintenance on bikes for years but this year I started renovating bikes as well, it's been a ton of fun!
Thank you! The next couple builds will be fun, too. The Bridgestone on an earlier video is getting some mods and I have a Kona Lava Dome that’s getting a re-do (with a 1x but it’s not a full resto-mod build like the Hardrock. Retro-mod?).
Oh sweet! Cool to hear you’re giving bikes a new lease on life, too 🤙
It’s so much fun, creating and repurposing old comfy bikes!
My favorite build of yours so far! They’re all great, this one just speaks to me. 👍 Well done!
This one was really comfy and I loved this setup! A lovely path racing commuter. This style of build is right up my alley with priority of practicality and comfort with a dash of speed and agility thrown in. The Albatross bars were a great fit for this, it handled beautifully!
So wonderful to see vintage bikes treated with such care and given a great second life! I have a Trek 800 Antelope that was an awesome climber but fell out of favor when I purchased a full-suspension bike that's now obsolete.
You've inspired me to reconnect with my Trek!
That saddle moment was HOT!
Hahah glad you liked it! 😂
That slow mo saddle moment 🤣🤣😂😂
Hahah had to 😆🤌
Great job! I’m looking to do something similar to my ‘97 Trek 800.
That bike turned out rad to the MAX! 👌 I love that bar/stem combo.... Actually I love all of it! Well done.
Thanks Michael!! 🙌 yeah the bar is really what makes this bike for me, along with the other parts it makes for one of my favourite setups ❤️ friction shifting is so great!! Haha can’t get enough of it
I have enjoyed your channel for sometime. Today there was a surprise. The bike you featured was sold just a few miles from my home in North Carolina. Indeed it is a small world. Love what you did to the bike.
No way! That’s cool to hear, thank you! Glad you loved the bike, if the store is still there and you’re ever there let them know how a bike they sold in the 80s made it to New Zealand haha. It’s a lovely bike and is still being loved with its new owner.
Thanks!
The same old thumb shifter as mine, love it❤️
"after throwing the cone spanner on the ground..." 😂😂 Great work as always and cool to see that RD back in use again 🥳
Time to make this the official type of bike for the Tours,so we can get back to pure skills...THIS is riding a bike, tassles, horn, basket, all of that..ride this up those hills for 200 KM and we will see things change..
I like the swallow tail bars wrapped. Don't know why I haven't thought of that. I am a big fan of 80-90s MTBs. I do think the 26" rim brake wheel is best for all but specialty bikes. 650B for single track and 700c for road racing.
That bike looks great and it can move 👍🏾
I didn’t think I’d watch the whole thing but here we are. Well done.
Haha thank you! Glad you liked it
Thumbies are great! I have had mine (Shimano XT, 3X7) for the last 30 years and they function perfectly. They're simple, require virtually no maintenance, are indestructible and simply work in all kinds of weather.
I like the Dutch style comfort bars especially for my bad back intact I have these handlebars in my collection at one point i rode them on my electric bike these bars change you bike from a mountain bike to a Dutch style cruiser 😎 👌
The original red paint looks great. Even with all its age. These 90s cro mo bikes are getting popular now. Everything is Aluminum these days. Good video.
Thanks for the video, and especially for the little ride around after. Nice to see other countries from a
Pedal point of view.
Thanks for checking it out! I love seeing rides from other places, too. Will hopefully have a nicer gopro to come for future videos, too. 🤙
Yeah. What a beautiful trail !
I Love you trek 820 😊👍❤
Cool video!
Great job!
Noice build maate.
So strange seeing this being pulled apart! It’s done well there😂
I just bought a trek 820 I've only seen pictures of for $20. Thanks for the inspiration
Nice build ! Perhaps a bell is a worthwhile addition, as you scared the shit out of the pedestrian @ 27’
Thanks!
I don’t ring my bell at every pedestrian, I tend to ding if they’re old or blocking the path. More often than not, if I ding at someone who’s on the correct side then they’ll change side or become more of an obstruction by turning around to see what’s happening.
Subscribed.
Great channel, right up my street.
Regards from NE Thailand.
Thank you for subscribing! Glad you like the videos 🙌🙌
Greetings from New Zealand!! 🥳❤️
im hoping he actually brings it back with him. glad he went for the brooks and the pannys
Nice one! I went for a ride along basically the same route last week, Craigavon park and the cycleway through Mt Roskill. I like the tip of modifying a rear rack to put on the front, because front racks seem crazy expensive.
Would that be adding a rack in addition to a rear rack and do you run a front rack only ?
@@davidwhocares3293 I do my grocery shopping on a bike, and I think with a lot of weight you're much better off using panniers to keep the weight low down. I've tried carrying heavy stuff high up on the bike and it makes things very unstable. (anything above 5 kilograms will majorly affect your bike handling, so you have to be strategic in how you carry it). So a rear rack is better for me. A front rack is good for when you're just carrying a few things, slightly more aero than rear panniers and easily accessible while you're riding. Having both is good if you're touring.
Here for the bikes. Stay for the legs.
I’m going to have to look out for some of those Gravel Kings. They look 🤌
Hahaha will make sure to put leg clips on for ya, Mark 😁❤️😆 🦵
They’re lovely! A nice, speedy, reliable and pretty dang capable 26” tyre. They turn in nicely on all surfaces 👍
Can’t justify Gravel Kings cause they’d cost more than what I paid for the bike.
@@jp93309 haha that’s the story with most of my bikes, bars and tyres are normally the biggest cost for me
Just gave my daughter my 1992 920 bought new.. less than 100 miles.
Really like the bike. Could not follow everything you said, but great.
Ultrasonic cleaners for bike parts take up not much more room than your plastic tub, deffo worth the money, you can do other things while it's cleaning.
Although they are a bit noisy, I stand mine on an old towel to dampen the sound a bit.
Nice video... 👍🏼
Ooh that’s a good towel tip, thanks!
Glad you like the video 🤙
It's unfortunate that you have to deal with rust! I live in a desert so I don't really have to worry about it but I do have to worry about dry rot!
Sweet👍
nice retro bike😊
I love it! Just got myself a Trek Antelope frame, hope you don’t mind me copying the idea 😅
love this build, looks exactly like some of my builds. top notch.
Looks👌🏽
Checked in with the phone number associated with the original selling bicycle shop. Indeed they have gone out of business but the number is to a current bicycle shop. They were intrigued by your story!
Friction thumbys are great so much more reliable then the rapid shifters especially the early ones
super toasty
Hey toasty. Currently buying parts for a daily commuter/gravel build im planning for a mid 90’s cannondale. Not quite sure which bar setup would be better between this bike and the blue Bridgestone you made a video on (thumbys and normal levers vs. bar ends and hooded levers). Any advice? Bike will be ridden daily and graveled on weekends. Cheers
I’m debating on buying a fairly good condition white Antelope locally. $200 US though which is a lot more than I normally spend. Also no fun if it’s too nice. Ok talked myself out of it now.
Haha fair enough, hopefully a cheaper and rougher one shows up 😎🤞🤙 I like the ones that are a bit beaten up, too!
Great build! Love it as a commuter. Sorry if I didnt catch it- what's the gearing of this bike?
how did you manage to get the cigne stem on a quill stem? looks great and i've been thiniking about a similar set up, but vo say it's not possible? thanks!
That's a nice color for '85. My 820 is garish, '80s purple and pink. I am putting a dynamo in the front for the dark season, because riding to work and home are in the twilight or dark, and what's a pound of hub compared to buying batteries?
I love purple and pink haha. Oh nice!! It’s also a pain charging up lights, dynamo’s make life a lot easier 👍 enjoy the light side of riding!💡 🤙
Tops
The crank arm taper gets bigger each time you tighten it with grease. its fine till it's not.
My Trek Antelope frame was made in Taiwan? I think mine is a 1990 or 1991. Its black with the bright green and blue decals.
What was it like cycling around tight corners with the Nitto Albatross bars?
My Nitto Albatrosss bars arrived and I tried them on my old MTB bike. The upright position feels great, but I'm slightly worried about turning on this thing because of thigh/knee strike... is this thing kind of normal and do I just compensate by going slower?
just use a bell when you pass someone, it´s not only good manners but much saver
I have had people yell at me with and without using a bell. It should be safer, yes.
But as you can see, there was no bell installed so I couldn’t “just use a bell”.
Which instance were you talking about, anyway?
I get best result from Autosol by smearing it on, and letting it dry, then buff.
So clean. Love the bars and wrap. Which bars? How do you feel it compares with the Bridgestone you rode?
Panaracer tires? Look Sharp!
Hi Toasty, nice build and great vid! Just wondering what model SKS guards they are? P65? Looking at getting some good coverage on my 2.1" GK's. Chur.
how much does this bike weigh? Thanks
What stem did you say you used in the first setup?
it's hard to find 26x2.1 of this panaracer gravelking sk+ :( idk if it's a bit related in size with a 700x50c?
first :)
Haha you beat Gary 😯😆❤️ thanks, Ashley!
Which brand of grease did you use? Thanks!
Hey! I use a waterproof wheel bearing grease from the auto store (SupercheapAuto in New Zealand&Australia). Has been great for me
Nice Looking Bike!!
Can i ask you what handlebar is that?
Thanks
Nitto albatross
What’s the rust converter you are using please?
Is it Hammerite Kurust?
Hey, it’s CRC Rust Converter. The Hammerite one probably does the same thing but I’ve never used it
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Hello, Commuter or ATB the category? Thats not the most important, but as i know the commuter bikes have narrow tires (?). A saw same bikes with Maxxis DTH tyres, on an other website, there them called "ATB" bikes. What is the difference?
Adam you need a bell
It’s not my bike haha 🔔 🛎 50:50 whether people would hear a bell, anyway. People get in their own lil world 😆
I think Harry is putting a bell on, though! 🔔
What bars?
Whats with the obstacle course
Like from me . Thanks .
What size frame is that? I believe the old treks are measured in inches. There should be a sticker on the bottom of the frame post that the seat goes into.
The tube you’re talking about is known as the “seat tube”, did you watch the video?
Yes
Wild
I was wondering the size. I have a trek 850 and the wife has an 820, I need to check the sizes but mine is much larger than hers. I was thinking of converting one of them to a bmx cruiser style.
You have the bike but are asking the size of mine in a different setup, why?
I’d normally convert the smaller one to bmx bar, it’s easy to whip the stem out and throw some bars on to mock it up.
If you have the bikes you can measure them, but regardless of what they measure as I would mock them both up. If you have a bad back then use the taller bike.
Is that soft red? I got one and it looks pink as hell!
Yep it’s red, they came pink too I think! Would love a pink or purple one. Firetruck red isn’t my favourite colour for bikes haha
I possess a savoy frame 26 I would like to repair it
But no time for it
Hi, what size is that trek
Hey, I happen to have the measurements still haha. Trek Antelope Red TT: 57 ST: 56-22” (c-c and c-t).
The new owner has taken it to the UK, but I believe he’s still using it in about the same setup 😄🤙
You need a bell.
What kind of camera
This was on an iPhone 11 Pro, newer videos are on an iPhone 14 Pro Max
did you invent #26inchlifestyle
Haha
Use Fluid Film in the US to rust proof inside Wankers
i though i was listening to Elon Musk.
I know you're from NZ so you can be forgiven, but its pronounced MaRIN.
