“How do two brothers get into the nail care business?” This is the single most common question people ask us. There’s a long and rocky version but we’ll give you the short one. We have our fearless and unconventional mother, Young Salo, to thank. With a single-minded entrepreneurial spirit, she decided to start her own business at the age of 49. She had a passion for the nail industry and we did everything in our power to support her. In the end, this is a family business.
Greg, the older brother, became a licensed nail technician after switching gears from fire fighter’s training. He is energy personified and has a true passion for developing the best professional nail care products and education. Habib is the younger brother. He jumped in a few years later; taking a detour from medical school and a life in music. He brings his own creative mind for business, marketing and strategy. Unexpectedly, we are a perfect team.
Today, more than 20 years later, Young Nails Inc., is a professional nail care manufacturing company exporting to over 40 countries worldwide and distributing domestically to over 3000 stores. We’re respected for our next-level product innovation and education. Our mission is to bring you the best quality products and we’ll show you how to use them with incredible results. It’s really that simple.
Welcome to the Young Nails family!

The example at 6:00 is great bc once that person got their first set from the walk-in salon and liked it, they probably kept coming back not even thinking about the price breakdown. They got what they wanted for a price they felt was worth it. If someone wants to pick their services based on the price on the window and can’t fathom paying more, they are settling for what they can afford. Which is fine. But don’t be upset if someone like that doesn’t come to you. Stay competitive because you 1) don’t wanna be “the cheap nail tech,” and 2) don’t want to cheapen the rest of your peers by under-charging.

Thank you for this overview. I am currently in a tough situation running my own salon suite and building quickly in a small town. I'd say my application skills are intermediate and now I'm adding a LOT of advanced nail art to my services. I'm having a very difficult time quoting art as it takes me awhile to complete and I price the art lower because I'm still perfecting things. I've had to start adding a day or two every week & I've always wanted to get to this point in my career - but now I'm struggling to manage it all!!! I am currently booked out about 4 weeks.

I’ve spent thousands more annually to ensure that my technique and skills are current, sanitary and effective. Only the BEST for my clients and they know this. They know that I charge accordingly. I also take my time to do my job correctly. My services are not fluff and buff.

Great advice! Even though I’ve been doing nails for 32 years there are so many people that are coming out of Nail school or even DIYers that do way more beautiful things that I do. When I got out of nail school, all we had to do is a simple manicure we didn’t have to even do an acrylic nail so I do do acrylics ,gels ,Dip, pedicures, but I don’t do any nail art so you’re right longevity doesn’t always mean better.

I'm not licensed because I have nerve damage in my hands, so I can't do this all day. But I'm good, and if I did get licensed, I would be charging for my skill from the get-go. I don't make beginner nails even if I were technically a beginner in the industry. On a side note, I used to pay $40 for a full set in 1996. I can't believe some people charge that little still!

8-10years ago any time I’d get my nails done I would go to a salon in my area but more into the city.. & for the longest they were charging $25-30 a full set.! & 5-10 for a tip.! For the summer I’d alwayssss get a classic French. White tips w/pinkish clear acrylic & gel top coat. My go to. about 5yrs ago I went in and after He finished my nails & he said the amount I owed)they finally up’d their prices.. so that same set I always got now cost me $50.. not including tip 🙄😑🙆‍♀️ so after that I started to do my own nails lol 💁‍♀️

I just started booth renting like 2 months ago. I did a lot of research, but how I really claimed my price is with y’all’s “you only need one” bit 😂 I’ve never built a clientele and I’m scared and totally unsure in my ability to build a business. So I figured as long as I can get one client I better be able to pay my booth rent. However now I want to figure out how and when to raise my price to be $20 more…. 😂
I should’ve thought it out in a bigger picture 🧐

I have been told my prices are high but they are average to the other day spas in the area. The people not from the neighborhood that I am in complain, they also think we are a walk in nail salon too. The people in the neighborhood with the average income more then the surrounding area don't care what they pay as long as it is good. I do monthly promos and sales.

  • @catpride1323

It's easy to set prices per item, like full set, fills and for art items like: decals, stones and color or glitter can be a per item price.
But how does someone price time?
Something like doing portraits or an art item you'd have to make in advance.
What is a fair price, per hour that you should charge?
Of course that brings to mind, that you might get faster after many sets or items...
Can you give any advice in this area of pricing??
    Thank you, 😊

    • @youngnailsinc
      @youngnailsinc  Před rokem

We recommend pricing all of your services accordingly so that you are making the same "per hour" whether you are doing a full set, fill or art. For example, if a full set takes you 60 minutes and you charge $85, art that takes you 60 minutes should also be priced at $85

    • @catpride1323
      @catpride1323 Před rokem

@@youngnailsinc Thank you for replying, I was really hoping someone would... :)
But if you are new or a returning tech - then your slower.
So in the beginning a full set/ fill may take 2+ hours. Before the art... :)
Later you'll get that down to an hour or so, but until then how exactly do we do that??
Like, I wanna make/charge 85. per hour, so until I can do it in an hour, I make 42.50, or whatever it works out to be for your hours ??
And if I try and put the a la cart menu together, would I charge someone for a decked out set like this:
Full set (any product) 85. Add length 10. Extreme shape. 10. Mix of colors and glitters (3 of them) 15.
Hand painted portraits ( takes 1 hr) 85.
      Total is $ 205.
      - taxes and tip is on top of that... ??
      Does that sound about right?
      Is that what your saying?
Because some of those incredible techs, who do a full hand painted scene across all nails, have said it takes anywhere from 20 to 35 hours to paint them. At 85. per hour that's just under 3000.
I think she said she charged 1200. (1500. max) which works out to 35.30 per hour....
This is why I thought I would ask your guys opinion, as I know your position on, charging your worth.
Which I agree with, but in the same breath, it's hard to have that work on the peoples, when it costs $3000.
Maybe it's just me and I have hidden lower self-esteem syndrome, but I'd be terrified to tell someone it's 1200. let alone 3000. .. and yes, of course I know it's a conversation for before not afterwards.
When I was told how long it actually took for these nails, that's when I started going, well wait, how do you charge for this?
To make it reasonable, so people will buy, you gotta drop the hourly rate. But someone, somewhere is gonna do the math, (there is always one who does)
And she'll ask why are you 85. per hour for these services, but only 35. per hour for art...??
Sorry for going on and on about this, (your probably saying, my god its art, stick on a sticker and be done already... lol)
But you can see how my head is spinning and going back and forth...
Cause you also don't want to be the idiot tech, who is ruining it for the industry standard ...
Thank you again for responding and for the lengh of this reply..
Pricing is actually really hard to do and causes a lot of stress, for so many techs, lol
Look who I'm telling that too...
I've just never seen a response to the, buy the hour question.
      😊

Hey, it might be contact dermatitis. If that is the case, you'll notice that once you completely remove the product, it will heal within a few days. I experienced it when I was using cheap acrylic products, but when I switched to hard gel it stopped. So maybe switch to a different kind of nail enhancement and use quality product even if it is for practice. Try your best to not allow the products touch your skin during application and you should be good. This is from my experience dear, not an expert.

    • @youngnailsinc
      @youngnailsinc  Před rokem

We always recommend seeing a health care provider at the first signs of a reaction and then to keep all products off until you are completely healed.

I have a few questions, and I'll ask in separate posts.
If in your area the common practice is to price a la carte, should you do the same?
I always did one price for nails and then art extra.
But out here they do acrylic price, gel price, add on shape, length, french, etc.
Should you copy rhat so the customer understands??

    • @youngnailsinc
      @youngnailsinc  Před rokem +1

We don’t recommend different pricing for acrylic and hard gel. You want to be able to use what you think is best on each client depending on what their nails and lifestyle need and not have them pick one or the other based on price.
We definitely recommend charging for art and some of your art may be more than others, that would be up to you. Also, we personally would have an extra charge for length and certain shapes. For examples, stilettos would be an extra charge because it takes more skill. For length, your base price can be for just active length or you can make a decision on what the max is before anything longer begins to cost more.

@@youngnailsinc So then I am basically doing, as I always did before.
I never cared if it was Gel, Acrylic or Combo, Full Set, is Full set, Fill is Fill.
Add on for lengh and art.
Add on for 5, 6, or 7 weeks in between fills.
Customers in this area are not used to that kind of pricing, which is why I was asking if we should copy the locals...

@@youngnailsinc thank you. I did visit your online store before I sent my last text. I will purchase the UV lamp, the efile, and the " debris particle sucker" . I'm getting ready to start school for licensing in Calif. Am planning on buying basic inventory little by little while in school so it doesn't hit me all at once with the expense. I'm interested in the simple basics you use:
Regular nail polish of many colors ( OPI ? )
      Replacement bulbs for the lamp
Regular lotion or oils for legs and hands once nails are done
Supplies like cotton balls, polish remover, acetone, paper placemats or towels, small little fans for drying Regular polish, toe separators for pedicures, instruments like clippers, dappen dish, brushes, alcohol, bits, nail forms-tips-guides, pre-made designs and decals, embellishments, tools to place embellishments. So many basic supplies...I'm hoping there is an online supplier or websites that are cheaper than most.im I'm hoping that some things don't really vary in quality and can be purchased at Target or Dollar Store ( like alcohol, cotton rolls and balls ).
I don't know what I don't know. I feel kind of foolish bothering you with this. I want to save Every penny I can, but I don't want to compromise quality on things that matter. I trust you and I'm so grateful for you.
Is there a Generic brand you tens to use for supplies? Is there a supplier or online supplier that you use?

At the end of the day, you got to do whats right for you.
My question is, are your teachers local?
If yes, then they are telling you $26. for a reason.
And like Tracy said, being new doesn't mean your not good..
So if your good or great, charge the $26. your work will speak for itself.
Your regular price could be $26 but run a special for $16 for the 1st month.
But like she said, its hard to go up, once your down...
Besides, people love a deal, a special, a coupon... you can run the special as long as you like.
One month it 20% off, another month its $8.00 off, and another its buy one get one 50% off.
Your still collecting around the same amount for the full set. And you've never charged full price once.
When your ready too, no special that month, or the special is now, on nail art. ..
New sets get free glitter, now your getting the $26. But giving away $5. In glitter.
I hope all of that made sense and hope it helps.. 😊

I gave each client 5 business cards, I put their name on the back of the card.
The new client who brought it to me, got $5. Off their new set.
The client, with their name on the back of the card, got $5.00 of their next fill.
So it was a win, win for both.
They want to hand out your cards, cause it saves them money.
It helped me build my clientele.
Clients were always asking if so and so came in, wanting to know if they earned a reward... lol
I always made sure to ask my clients at their next appt. do you need more cards??
Some were passing out so many of my cards, and for free.
Advertising/promotions that didn't really cost me anything.
Plus, you keep track of how many $5. discounts you did in a year, and thats a tax right off.
I always saved the business card with both names on it, wrote the dates they were given, put them in an envelope and gave it to the accountant at years end....
      Hope that helps 😊
