  • Two great radios, both with awesome receivers. How do they compare?
I know, I'm sure no one has been laying awake at night, thinking about this, but here it is anyway if you should ever be in doubt.

Being mainly a CW person, I REALLY appreciated the comparison. Not many videos (or any for that matter) doing such a head to head. THANKS!

With the Yaesu FTdx-10, it feels like you're listening with your ear to a well!

I have a KX2 and its close to the KX3 and its wonderful for portable. I got the K4 and both a friend and I have and he moved from the FTDX101. The DSP is better now on yaesu but since Elecraft is a small company they are working on improving the DSP noise reduction from thier engineering group. Its rare to see yaesu update were Elecraft does.

Thank you for this. Haven't seen another comparison like.

Nice comparison - reminds me how good my KX3 sounds and that Marshall speaker really helps. I am a long time Icom user but not locked in to a brand. When I was looking to move from my 7600 I really wanted to go to either the FTDX10 or 101D, but current antenna situation requires the AH-4 remote tuner, so went with the 7610. I am not disappointed, but I’m still liking these Yaesu rigs.

Liked your comparison between the two rigs. I have a FTDX10 and an Elecraft K3, with all the filter slots filled. I agree with your comparison; my K3 acts very similarly to your KX3. I can always hear CW better on the K3 and I can almost always hear SSB better on the 10. The DSP on the 10 is amazing. I’m keeping both rigs.

I think the age of the rigs I would have expected the DX10 to be better, in fact its shows just how good, the longer in the tooth, the KX3 is. I own both rigs and while I was tempted with the IC705 and it's super piece of kit my KX3 would have to be surgically removed and it just does the job I want. The speaker on the KX3 is pretty dreadful. Thanks for your comments.

Loved the video. What would be another interesting video is showing your set up for APF on the KX3 regarding pulling out low level CW signals. Maybe explain how you came up with your preferences on the APF settings. Again really like the videos you produce. Maybe explain the APF variable and the BW variable in the KX3? Again, love these videos!!! Dwight (WM5F)

The limitations for those of us without antenna farms are our antennas! Fantastic tat we have such great selections of commercial rigs to choose from!!!

Perfect example of how advanced elecrafts rxer have been. I use the 10 but the k3s is definitely less fatiguing on Cw.

I found your video very useful. The KX3 is my only HF radio but at some point I want to add a more powerful transceiver. The ftdX10 is certainly a candidate. The KX3 is a hard act to follow, receiver wise, but your video shows that ftdX10 has a comparably good receiver. I note also that the ftdX10 is rated near the top of commercially available receivers with the KX3 still close behind. Thank you.

9 places lower in the listing is not ‘close behind’.

@@johntyler4222 The difference is imperceptible. It's too thin for human to realize other than a measuring instrument. It is the signal processing afterwards that makes the difference by ear and is not tested in the receiver lists.

I used my KX3 bare on all bands also as base station for some weeks in two occasions while my FDM-DUO and my DUO-ART 60 were being repaired. Not bad at all.

Well done test with identical, filters, pitch… not the case with so many test on YTube. Yes KX3 is one of the best RX. K4 has similar audio (unlike K3). Please note the KX3 has a low sensitivity (like K4), just enough for HF and this may also explain the behavior of the AGC making sound of band noise poping up with the FTDX10 (and some part of the ringing). That said, APF test is eloquent…

I have the ftdx10 and audio is very good. The elecraft is a nice transceiver though. Also I had same noise on 80m and found that my outside garage led light was causing the issue.

I think you mentioned that you have a KX2. I’m thinking about ordering one. How does that compare to the KX3 and to the DX10 for SSB and for CW? I realize there’s fewer bands on the KX2 and that it’s designed for SOTA and POTA. However, I hope that the KX2 performs close to the DX10 and KX3, and hope the DSP is good too. Thanks in advance for your opinion.

In order to make a comparison, you actually need some "calibration" signal. S9 on both at the same input level, then go to a noisy signal to evaluate the Dynamic range on both. The KX3 usually needs the preamp 10 dB to show S9 at 50uV. Quite many contest operators prefer KX3 as their first choise.
Your broadband QRM sounds like a switching power supply without any EMC-filter. Can also be a LED-bulb.
Fun to hear a comparison though.

The KX3 without the pre amp turned on will be even worse than the Icom 718 when it comes to signal height.

Předpokládám, že v testu není použitý pro každý TCVR stejný reproduktor, test je tedy neplatný pokud nejsou jeho předmětem interní reproduktory.
