  • I hate everyone. How dare they do this to baby Rei??! The trauma keeps getting laid on thick. Will there be any hope or healing for this kid?

7:42 When Kouda asks Rei "Do you want to play more shogi?" in the dub it is arguably a valid interpretation of his intention but it is not a literal translation. In the OV Kouda aska Rei "shogi wa suki ka?) which means "Do you like/love Shogi?" to which Rei answers yes. And that was his lie. No Rei didn't like playing shogi in particular as a game. The only reason he played it in the first place was to spend more time with his father, who was busy managing that stupid hospital he was forced to inherit by his own father.
Also the relationship between Kyouko and Rei is some of the most interesting part of the series for me. It is such a wild storm of feelings that is all mixed up.

@@TheRubyDanger this is the first anime I’ve watched that actually portrayed depression very well. Rei has little to no emotions but when he does show emotions, it just makes you cry even if it’s happy.

It's no that Kouda didn't want to adopt Rei just to help him, its just that the easiest and quickest way with the least amount of questions and judgment was to take advantage of the mentoring system certain fields have in Japan. If he's just his shogi disciple Rei can live with Kouda with little to no problem but Rei would have to be willing to live playing shogi, that's why he asks him if he actually likes shogi first.
I can understand being put off by Kouda's cold attitude towards his children shown here as well, but you have to frame it under the frame of training professionals instead of training your children. It's not an easy lifestyle to make money just from playing a board game, so if you don't have what it takes it's best to just focus on school and a more standard career. He's cold about is of course, but there is care in there with him knowing that his children would be suffering losses for no gain.

But thats just it...he's treating his children not like children, but like he is a professional mentor. He's treated them all like that their entire lives
