    Congrats on the three month run. It's easy to get bogged down in all the details about Linux this and that. Been there myself several times. Seems your having fun with this one. I think that's the way to go. Wishing you a safe and stress free move. Catch ya later.

    Good to hear, I am still on 22.04.4, waiting for 24.04.1 to update.

      Why are you still on 22.04.4?

      @@bhargavjitbhuyan9394 because I am usually not in a rush to upgrade and almost always wait for a point release. that way I avoid most headaches. Not all, but most of them

    I'm a sophomore linux user. This is my first time upgrading Ubuntu. I regret it now, I should have waited for the 24.04.1.

    I'm glad it's working for you. I'm still on 22.04 waiting for the point release to make the upgrade. Same as you mentioned, since Ubuntu has given me no troubles at all, I see no point in changing it

    Good luck with the move Nigel.
    Wrt snaps, for me, its not functionality that is the issue, but as I recall in one of your own video (I think?), the potential for a 'bad actor' ( I hate that term!!) to introduce some form of very detrimental malware that is more difficult to do as flatpak, appimage, and definitely the distro's own curated repository by way of the installed indigenous package management system in use.
    Your new laptop is also capable of making Ubuntu 'fly'. My own hardware generally speaking predates archimedes, and is not so comfortable...😢...
    Best wishes and stay safe.

      All true James, all true. I'm going for the vanilla experience here but endeavouring to limit the snap apps to the bare minimum, choosing debs where i can. Most of the snaps are canonicals own ones, so I'd hope they have had proper scrutiny. The only 'wild' one being mahjongg, which, like yourself i really enjoy. IIRC there wasn't a deb option for that.

      Hiya matey, on this machine it's working out really well after some initial niggles. Now i'm pretty happy, but will be sticking with MX and pure Debian on the desktops.

  • @johanb.7869
    @johanb.7869 Před měsícem +1

    Good luck with the moving. I'm still on MX, but the one thing I don't like about Debian is that Thunderbird 115.12.0 still didn't get the update to 115.12.2 which was already released 2 weeks ago. Why does it take so long?🤔

    • @stationsixtyseven67
      @stationsixtyseven67  Před měsícem +1

      Never fear Johan, I too am still on MX on my main desktop pc, with Debian on the secondary desktop and the other lappy too:)

    Cheer up mate. 😜 Interesting video i have been thinking of swapping over but always get put off almost immediately after installing any distro as i need to spend like 10 hours just getting the basics to work correctly.

    if you don't like snap you can remove all the snaps and snapd, i use ubuntu 24.04 without snapd and gnome work just fine i use flatpak for some gnome utils.

    I would have stayed on Ubuntu if it weren't for me unable to install .deb packages from download, then unable to install the gdebi snap because I couldn't find it in the software manager. Also, I'm not much of a fan of the feel of GNOME, as a Linux newbie. I thought I'd try other distros that simply work with a familiar interface (Windows like) so I tried Linux Mint. It works okay but it still lacks some important features that should be built in instead of downloading third party softwares or extensions. But after the installation I remembered that there are also Kubuntu and KDE Neon or also Zorin OS ... Well, I have installed myself and made my distro comfy so be it.

    Snaps are shit in ubuntu

    • @stationsixtyseven67
      @stationsixtyseven67  Před měsícem

      Yes they are and it's a real shame, but there are some work-arounds that you could try if you give it a google search.

  • @DevrajBhadoria
    @DevrajBhadoria Před měsícem +1

    Try removing snap packages they are much slower and take more memory, use flatpak instead

    • @stationsixtyseven67
      @stationsixtyseven67  Před měsícem +1

      Did try that a few years back when they first appeared and yes it can be done, but I'm going for the vanilla experience this time. Thanks for watching and commenting. All feedback is most welcome.

    Hello from Russia! Pls tell me Sir, do you have problems with preview pictures and pdf file in nautilus? Nemo and another file explorer doesn't have problem with preview

    • @stationsixtyseven67
      @stationsixtyseven67  Před měsícem

      Regarding preview pictures in the file manager yes, I do miss them on Gnome compared with Thunar on XFCE but I can live without it on this machine. Thanks for watching and I appreciate your feedback matey.
