  • In this episode Eli the Computer Guy talks about the basic concepts for designing a virtualized infrastructure. He goes over why Type 1 Hypervisors are important, SAN's (Storage Area Networks), and why each instance of a server should do as little as possible to educe vulnerabilities.

You should add more keywords in your description like in your last year classes. It gives you a better visibility. That's how I found your videos in the first place.
By the way, great subject. It would be great to have software administration classes like how to remotely automate FTP and database backups over the internet.

Mysql can always be accessed/attacked if apache was exploited since if apache connects to mysql through php, theres going to be a connect.php with all the credentials in there. so locking down mysql to even listen to localhost only on another box is not more secure than putting it togher with apache

  • @buckonotthedog
    @buckonotthedog Před 11 lety

the instance will be started and booted on new phisical server. it will not be migrated in working state.
it's is HA -- if you loose a server than it comes back.
but if you have 2 PowerSUs, than the server will still be running and you can setup a script to migrate all working instances to a new server and then shut down this compromised one, then all this instances will still be up and running all the time...

How exactly does a running instance get switched over to another physical hardware server when there is hardware failure? That is the only part of this I am not sure about. I thought the OS was installed to the Hypervisor. How would the Hypervisor know there is a problem and be able to migrate the instance if it no longer operating? Is there a copy of the OS also stored on the computer where the management software is installed and the management software moves it to another server?

No, however you would not use a normal SSD. Also you can think about it as RAM but less volatile. It is better to use SSDs in a server that is doing a lot of paging. Such as a picture server, DB server, Trade Sever, or your front end server. These would be taking the most user hits. You wouldn't really use SSDs in your storage servers unless your company just has a lot of money.

Also, at 19:30, when you're talking about layering the MySQL server underneath the webserver, that's not going to secure you against an injection attack. An SQL Injection attack isn't an attack against SQL, it's actually an attack against PHP. Not saying that you didn't know that, just that your analogy was a bit misleading.

Agreed that we can migrate the instances of OS to other servers with the help of Management Software, even when one of the server fails to work, at ease.

Your ISP is in charge of that. In my area you can pay about 20% more and they will give you a static IP. Or you can buy a business line.

    Hi Eli,
your wor and classes buddy. wondering if you can setup introduction ans practice intl these classes below:?
    - A network scenarios with servers, PC, 2 x switches and modem router. All on physical host.
    - Another is install type 1 MS hyper-v core and manager
    - Using type 1 or type 2 can you please explain and simu late how the different VM servers interace with eachother within the box? like the traffic?
    - Are you able to simulate or practice on a type 1 virtualization class on
enterprise level with few instances that can be bounce around in other server in that cluster like you talked about.?
would be exciting to when you do a class pract on setting up the convergence.
do you have classes for the various types of protocold?

every SSD has a maximum number of write cycles to an address block. That means, that you can not make more writes to a hard drive than it is aloved. Drive it self spreads writes arround, so that blocks are similar in writes. Once all the writes are taken, then this HDD goes into readonly mode.
another thing what to consider is, that this technology is still new and i have seen a lot of IBM and HP enterprise SSD failing -- so, Yes, they can die. And when they do, they probably die in groups :D

Hello ELI, your vids need no elaborations about how great they are. However i just installed VMware vSphere esxi 5.5 hypervisor on my lenovo think-center machine with config: i5, 3.2gHz, >300gb SATA HDD, 6GB ram. After successful installation I receive "ERROR 1962: NO OPERATING SYSTEM FOUND". I've tried 'formatwithmbr' and tweaking some of my BIOS setting like changing boot mode to legacy, auto and UEFI one after another, putting boot preference for HDD first etc. But none seems to work. I think BIOS and its settings are completely ineffective when it tries to boot, and I am not even taken to the esxi 5.5 hypervisor menu. Kindly help.
PS- The machine had windows server 2012 as running OS while installing esxi 5.5.
