    The sign of a mall on its last leg. Kiddie rides, massage chairs, GMC, and occasionally you bump into a guy wandering around shooting something with his camera.

      Brian Fantana, it's weird how people who outlet malls which are the same but don't have heat/Air conditioners! Also the only reason why the mall is there is because of Boscovs which it pretty busy on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday!

    The Mall held it's own all through the 90's and into the 2000's. I would estimate that online shopping and Walmart were Steamtown's demise but this place had a very active foodcourt and there was a coffee bar where I saw John Oates and his family when Hall & Oates were performing nearby years back. The demise of the Mall was within the last 8 to 10 years. I still think Steamtown can be used wisely but finding the right idea is what is tricky.

    Aaaaahhh, another great video. So nice that there are more than one "Dan Bell" here on YT, I need my dead mall fix :D
    A big thanks for making the video more stable, or perfecting your technique to get as stable video as possible. I do like the ambient sounds, and you mixing in commentary. So much better than talking while you are filming.

    Alot of video artifacts. camera issue or render issue? ( It seems to be a render issue. when rendering it try not to do anything on the computer and just let it render. doing other things can cause extreme artifacting. hope this helps a bit and hope you get it fixed / figured out. awesome video as always :D Edit: just finished the video .alot of shaking later on which cant really be caused by rendering. odd issue for a camera to have though unless it was dropped at some point.)

      Hmm, if the main file is totally fine when you play it back then it may have gotten corrupt when being uploaded. very rare but it does happen. If anything do a test upload but keep it unlisted just to see if it fixes the issue and if it does make it visible / replace this video. ( im not 100 up to date with youtubes upload system now so it may be easier then that lol. )

I think the Viewmont Mall is up there still, but I have not been there in ages. I would love to audio fub over this and tslk about that mall in its prime and what are some of the changes it went through and will be going through. Thank you for this update video!

    The mall has even less in it now than it does in this video. I heard the few stores that were still there left because the rent was raised. The food court is completely gone. They put the marketplace thing there, but it’s never open and most of the vendor booths are empty anyway. They also started making you pay or validate to use the parking lot, so now even people who are going elsewhere in downtown Scranton won’t park in the mall and possibly stop in. Boscov’s is still there, but not much else. I know the Gertrude Hawk and the Bath and Body Works are both gone.

  • @VivianMakin
    @VivianMakin Před 6 lety

    I was there on 5/17/2018. The food court was never revitalized, but some vendor stalls have been added in the center of the floor. The former BonTon is now part of Luzerne County Community College. They're adding an aquarium over a large part of the downstairs. It still has a fair amount of vacancies, but it stands a chance at surviving a revitalization and seems to be benefiting from the college area. Might be worth a revisit once the aquarium opens.

    I don't know how far you go out, but if you're ever near Oklahoma, Crossroads Mall in south Oklahoma City is a near dead shell, and it was once one of the largest and most modern malls in the country. Heritage Park Mall in Midwest City, OK is nearly as dilapidated and depressing as Rolling Acres, but smaller. It's worth a look.
    Thanks for your uploads!

  • @dzy01

    Have you been to any malls in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) as you are in Buffalo which isn't too far away. A few local malls to check are the Shops at Steeles (Steeles & Don Mills), Dufferin Galleria (Dupont & Dufferin), Parkway Mall (Ellesmere & Victoria Park), Lawrence Square (Lawrence West at Allen Road), Bridlewood Mall (Warden & Finch East), North York Sheridan Mall (Wilson & Jane), Yorkgate mall (Finch West & Jane), East York Town Centre (Overlea Blvd), Golden Mile Mall (Victoria Park & Eglinton East) and the Peanut Plaza at Don Mills Rd. south of Finch Ave. East. There are scores more in the suburban areas. High Park Plaza on Dundas West south of Bloor West is down to only an LCBO and Loblaws after the smaller stores left and was turned into a LCBO and Zellers closed. Just up the street from High Park Plaza is the Crossways mall and appartment complex at the northeast corner of Bloor St. West & Dundas St. West across the street from the TTC Dundas West subway station - it was a dead mall years ago and poorly managed at the time - I haven't been there in a long time - I think the new owners upgraded the mall. The sad Honeydale mall is gone, The long dead Bathurst Manor Plaza is being torn down to make way for townhouses and I hear that Promenade Mall at Bathurst St. and Centre St. has just been sold and will be either torn down or modified once Sears leaves and is to be turned into a forest of Condo towers ranging from 10 storeys to 35 storeys. But there seems to be more malls thriving than suffering in the GTA like the PATH system in Downtown Toronto, Eaton Centre, Yorkdale Shopping Centre, Yonge-Eglinton Centre, Sherway Gardens, Square One (Downtown Mississauga), Hudson's Bay Centre, Fairview Mall, Scarborough Town Centre, Dufferin Mall and Eglinton Square to name a few. I guess the low Canadian Dollar is making Canadians shop more at the local malls as opposed to the ones in the Buffalo area like the Walden Galleria, the now in trouble Boulevard Mall in Amherst as well as the nearly dead Eastern Hills Mall in Williamsville.

  • @BoratWanksta
    @BoratWanksta Před 7 lety

    I'm loving your dead mall series of videos, keep them up! Wow, this mall looks so very 90s like on the inside.
    And I'm impressed Starbucks opened here, in a mall that has a noticeable number of vacancies. Usually at malls like this, you only see Gloria Jean's at best. Though they have access to the outside to from what I see, so probably that's why they were less reluctant to open here. Honestly(I live in the Chicago area btw), this mall is kinda like a smaller version of Grand Ave. Mall in Milwaukee, WI. That's a downtown mall like this one, only that Grand Ave. preserved historic buildings and built around those when it opened up. And that Grand Ave. Mall is taller(2 stories, 3 stories around the center court and food court area). One difference I can see(vs. Grand Avenue in Milwaukee) is that they have more remaining food court tenants, but not so many regular shops. It's definitely starting to die at Grand Ave. sadly, since Culver's closed there not long ago.
    I don't know if you'll head west anytime soon to the Chicago area or nearby areas, but for dead malls I recommend visiting Charlestowne Mall(now The Quad, but most signage still says Charlestowne) in Saint Charles, IL, and of course Grand Avenue Mall in Milwaukee. I also think you should detour over to Benton Harbor, MI, and see The Orchards Mall. I would've also suggested Marquette Mall in Michigan City, IN, but that's now sealed up. For Indianapolis, check out Washington Square(eastern side of Indy) and Lafayette Square(northwest side). I want to say both these 2 malls used to be owned by Simon, but haven't been for years. Gary, IN I believe has a hybrid shopping center and very small interior mall called The Village that's mostly dead, except for a Rainbow store based on research I did. Plus a friend of mine posted some Flickr pics, of that mall/shopping center.

    You should explore the Westmount Centre or the North Town Mall in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The Westmount has an abandoned theater that you could maybe ask permission to go in there, and do the same to find a entrance in the North Town Mall.

      Scottsdale Galleria opened as a dead mall in the early 90s in Scottsdale, AZ. 3 floors and not a single anchor. In recent years, it became a corporate center due to high demand for office space in Old Town Scottsdale. Now it's completely full. Christown in Phoenix saw demolition, but the east Walmart wing and part of the mall extending south from there were retained. Costco replaced the original 1962 Penney's with mall access and the new JCP has a mall entrance where the former Wards wing abruptly stops. The old Wards was divided up and the former Bullock's wing and anchor were replaced by Target and more strip mall. Camelback Colonnade was converted into a power center, too by knocking down the northern side of the original dumbbell. Rhodes was divided with offices occupying the 2nd floor. Sears was divided up. Small piece of the mall still exists with Floor & Decor occupying the former Mervyns and Nordstrom Last Chance in the basement where it attracts a lot of bargain seekers. Park Central is outdoors, but its restaurants attract a lot of business since its in Central Phoenix. 2/3 anchors are office space for health insurance providers (St Joseph's Hospital is right there) and some of the former shops have office tenants. Desert Sky in west Phoenix is doing well. Mexican mercado moved into Mervyns and brougjt with it the charms of a Hong Kong back alley like you would see in Mexico. Burlington is in former Wards/Steve & Barry. Curacao moved into the old Penney's and seems popular. The Dillard's here never remodeled when they acquired Diamond's in the 80s. Sears is still around.

    • @KoubuPilot
      @KoubuPilot Před 7 lety

      Scottsdale Galleria opened in 1990 or so in Scottsdale, AZ. It opened as a dead mall and sits on 2 blocks connected by skybridge. In recent years it has been successful as a corporate center as office space in Old Town Scottsdale is in high demand. As a mall, it had no anchors. It created this kink in traffic flow on Scottsdale Rd that everyone hated. It sat 1/4 mile from Scottsdale Fashion Square, which at that time had begun a series of changes along with competing Camelview Plaza to become the rehion's largest mall, a luxury mall, and one of the most profitable malls in the US. In fact, the present day Dillard's (their 2nd time relocating!) is in a former Bullock's that was expanded in 1977 as well as pretty much almost all of the Camelview Plaza and is the largest Dillard's in the entire chain.

      Shady Lady, those historic buildings looked like they were going to fall down by themselves anyway.

      A.J. Deutsch Of course they look like they're going to fall by themselves because they were PREPPED for implosion. I don't know how long it was since they were last occupied, but they were probably structurally sound before they thought up the plan to replace them with that mall.

    Sucks that they destroyed those beautiful, old buildings to build this mall that is now failing little more than 20 years later.

    hey man! long time no talk! check out Iverson mall in PG county Maryland... it's pretty damn ghetto... and not safe at all... but it's basically been dead for a long time. All the stores are on short 6 month contracts and no store stays longer than said 6 months. I've seen dogs being sold out of crates in the middle of the mall, kinda sad if you think about it :/ ... their food court has one cookie stand left otherwise that's it.. "customers" only come to sell drugs haha... bring pepper spray, or tell me when you wanted to come and I'll bring mine XD. seriously you can email me if you want to go with some back up, just reply and I'll give you my email! if you plan to go alone... GOOD LUCK LMAO. have a good one... and again you have another like!
