  • This week on the Combat Base Podcast Chris Haueter and Melissa Haueter are joined by long time friend and student Bryan Roig. Brian is a true mixed martial artist who got his start in traditional martial arts 40 years ago. He is a 3rd degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Chris Haueter, a Judo black belt, a S.A.W. black belt, a Luta Livre black belt and a Hapkido black belt. Prior to grappling he was a successful competitive Dutch Kickboxer in Southern California. He also trained extensively with legendary catch wrestlers Billy Robinson, Josh Barnett, Erik Paulson, Yoshiaki Fujiwara and Mike Martelle. He is the host of the internationally renowned podcast Level Up Grappling, the Vice President of USA catch wrestling, and the Head Coach of PCI Jiu Jitsu in Mission Viejo, CA.
    -We discuss the philosophy of training jiu jitsu under Chris Haueter and how training has changed over the years. Bryan even details what it was like trying to find Chris in the early days comparing it to finding Master Yoda in the swamp!
    -Bryan gives a synopsis on what catch wrestling is and what sets it apart from brazilian jiu jitsu, judo, and other grappling arts. He also enlightens us with some martial arts history explaining the fusion of catch wrestling and judo that gave birth to modern day jiu jitsu.
