I am white, I have naturally curly hair that tends to friz. Maybe some would call it bushy. My mom did not understand my hair either. I was made fun of a lot growing up. I did everything I could to make my hair straight. Around 35 I decided to let my hair curl again. Best decision I ever made. Friz and all I am finally me. I have not had a bad hair day since. Just be yourself. Best advice ever. If someone doesn't like it, they are not for you.

I have Native American hair from my paternal grand and great grandparents. I have always been jealous of black girls because of all the amazing and beautiful things that they could do with their hair. It got to a point where my mother refused to do anything with my hair because it doesn't hold a curl no matter who does it, it never stayed in place, and it was always so "silky" from the natural oils produced by my hair and scalp. I, to this day, love watching black girls do things with their hair and wigs irl and online because it still amazes me every time that I see it. You are beautiful and I really wish that everyone thought that way about everyone and themselves.

As a child I was conflicted, I mean I was literally watching the marches, King being hurt during them (they don’t show y’all this on TV today but I remember it as a child on the news) I listen to Malcolm X speeches, I had family members that was in the black panthers, I remember when the SLA was finally extinguished. It was a conflict in time for me to see how badly bad people were treated but yet we always got white dolls for Christmas and our birthdays and we had to see a white Jesus on our church wall or at grandmothers home. Did not appreciate my 4C hair until I got to college. Wore my afro for 12 years until I got a Jheri Curl. Had that style throughout the 1980's until I went back natural and have been natural ever since. I am 70 years old and I can appreciate that black women have a choice to wear our hair in all kind of styles--braids, locs, silk pressed and relaxed styles, the whole gamut of hairstyles. There is no such thing as "Bad Hair." Not as long as it is clean and neat. Love the hair you are in my sister's.

I now realise how lucky I was, I grew up with my mum diligently taking care of and styling my natural hair. Around 12 years old I began begging for a relaxer because my school friends had relaxed hair. My mum didn’t want to do it but eventually gave in to make me happy. She continued to take care of my hair. At 19/20 I big chopped and now at almost 32 I still have natural hair. I feel like the memory of my mum caring for my natural hair made it so much easier for me to love and accept my natural texture. I now in turn look after my daughter’s natural hair and will absolutely never put a relaxer it. I believe she won’t ever ask for one because of the amount of the love she has for her hair at such a young age 🥰

@@maryfrances1307 that’s amazing, it makes me happy to know that good natural hair care wasn’t completely non existent across the board. Me too!! I was told I had good hair and even while relaxed I had grown women digging into my hair to feel my scalp for tracks because they couldn’t believe I was a black girl with long hair 😳. I too believe it was testimony to my mum because my hair care went down the drain when I went to uni, I burnt off my hair with relaxer’s and dyes. I suffered with edge loss and breakage all over. Since going back natural and looking after my hair properly my hair is very long and thick again as it was when I was a child. Nothing to do with good hair in my opinion and everything to do with diligence, love, care and good nutrition.

Same here. My Mom has been natural for most of my life and has had locs for over 15 years at this point. I went natural again in my 20s and now (late 20s) I have very healthy, relatively long 4B hair. I’m so glad my Mom both modeled and helped me to appreciate my hair.

That was my imprinting as a little girl, unconsciously I have been replaying this message in every hair choice I have made. I too have recently been owning and facing the harsh truths you raised in this video. Thank you for putting this out there. My one school teacher who was black always had something to say about it. And asked me one day why don't I get someone to do my hair. I was in the 3rd grade at the time. I remember as a little girl when my Black friends told me I had "good hair". I didn't know there was "good hair" or "bad hair". I told them that I had "bad hair" because it just hung there on my head, dead. But they could do so many things to their hair. They could braid it in so many different ways and they could wear jerry curls (it was the 80s). They looked at me with the realization that they had " good hair". It was the adults that were wrong. We were in second grade. Imagine being told that you have "bad hair" as a child. What is wrong with people? Different hair is not bad. Who sets the rules? We do. Black hair is good hair. Take care of it. Don't put chemicals in it and be free and natural. People should conform to your hair---accept and love it or keep it moving. No one will love your hair if you don't love it first.
On another note, my son has wavy hair like me and cried once because he wanted an afro like his friend. You see? Your hair is beautiful.

I never had this experience, and only once saw it happen to someone else(an older lady said my sister would be so pretty if she didnt wear her hair natural). To this day I love my hair and how versatile it is. Silk presses, wigs and weave are fun, but nothing compares to playing with my fro. Even when I'm tired of fixing or or crying over the lack of definition, there's always a new style to try and so I still LOVE my hair.

Still a bit intimidating. I'm still not sure I'm doing the right things. My hair is so soft and it get tangled a lot when I do two hand twists. I have to pull them apart and bust my hair every time. Wondering if I just go in the shower with them and then try to comb it out??? If that would be better cause my hair keeps getting shorter and thinner. I know cause the twists never look the same as before. When I first twisted them, it was much longer and fuller. Been thinking I should just twist and loc them up using micro twists but...I never got to do things with my hair. I want to eventually be able to do wash n goes and all these beautiful styles I see you do. I know there is plenty with locs as well but...I just...I dunno 😌 My hair gets frizzy and messy very quickly too so I end up doing the twists over a lot. 💆I'm a work in progress.

If only youtube was around back then. I wouldn't have gone through the amount of turmoil I went through with my hair and image. I have no females around me to help or be like a sister but I have you.
