  • It's a busy time at Lalande as I create bed curtains out of vintage toile de jouy to add to the antique bed crown in my bedroom, Ian the Plasterer starts in the downstairs loo and Andie chooses frames for her beautiful watercolours of the chateau bedrooms. But we also have to deal with some sad news...

My uncle is a farmer and he raised pheasants. He also has peacocks that are free to roam at will after they are big enough. He built a large, walk in aviary that housed the birds until the chicks were big enough to defend themselves against the introduced predators we have here like weasles, stoats and hedgehogs (that eat the eggs). The aviary also had quail being raised in as well. May be you could build an aviary down by the chicken house because it would also protect any chicks from predators. The mama birds and the chicks would not need to be long in the aviary and then could live free.

💐 Yes, I agree about an aviary. In my rural equestrian portion of Los Angeles, we have lots of 🦚 peacocks & predators.
Most ppl set up a large aviary for the peacocks to stay in safely @ night 🌝. There are always risks with freedom & roaming, but they typically only allow the adults out during the day.
For 🐔 chickens, it's not so free range. The great number of raptors (hawks, kites, falcons & owls) flying regularly overhead alone would deciminate them. Some ppl create moveable 4 sided cages that can plonk down over the top of them. It can be easily moved around to eat the grubs🐛 in the yard, but someone must still be outdoors to supervise them. 🐺Foxes, coyotes & mountain lions can find a way in those contraptions easily.
🐱Sad fact is that outdoor cats don't survive here long. 🐶Even leaving most dogs unattended outside during the day is not wise. 😱Most canines aren't smart enough to avoid confronting snakes, raccoons, skunks〰️let alone a truly serious predator.
🚨Small dogs need to stay near owners. My neighbor barely got there in time to save their Yorkie being carried off by a coyote in their backyard.
📍Fun Fact: Audubon Society has a link for 5 distinct owl🦉 calls in North America. We recently learned my neighbor has a couple of "screechy" barn owls atop his trees, while we have a bunch of "who-ing" Great Horned Owls on our side. 😉 Trust me, the former might be prettier, but the latter has a much more civilized greeting.
💌ps FrancoPhiler: That's a rather gross exaggeration. Have a heart. No use being evil toward LaLanders for this loss. They clearly want to give the birds their best life🎊. It's not nice being locked in a tiny enclosure 24/7 for sure. 🥺The peachick's ultimate sacrifice while heart-rending 💔 was not in vain. In the end, predators gotta eat too. 🔄Cycle of life.

Her crown is lined with fabrics fine,
    to rival any royal.
To place it where it does belong,
    the servants had to toil.
They scrambled up to lofty spheres,
    to lift the golden dome.
And screwed it to a sturdy wall,
so it won‘t start to roam.
    Looking at it from below,
    with extreme delight.
Only fabric from Jouy will see you through the night.

Poor wee little chick. It’s life as it’s meant to be. It became too independent because it was an only chick. I think shooing them into the walled garden is a great idea with a shelter for them. Their mum won’t wander away from them. People will just have to be super careful to close the gates.

@@TheFrancoPhiler don’t be ridiculous. Baby chicks don’t always survive. They’re perfectly well cared for. I lost many chicks and even full grown chickens to a fox who would strike in broad daylight with me right in the yard. Hawks kill them. Cats kill them. You can’t prepare for a neighbors dog to savage your birds. My dog got attacked by the neighbor’s pit bull TWICE before they got evicted. That wasn’t my fault. It was theirs for not keeping the thing on a leash.
Animals die when they’re in the world. Especially when you give them freedom to live natural lives.
Don’t try and pull your bullshit with me. Obviously you know nothing about letting animals live the way animals are meant to live and are trying to find a way to turn people against Stephanie.

Raccoons can open latches on the coop door if you don’t lock it. Hawks swoop down on free range chickens. The hens tolerate it … it’s just for a short while. To get the hens to go into the enclosure easily you must work with them a few times a week for months by feeding them in there.

Love all your toile de jouy fabrics! Hot decorators tip for using lots of toile de jouy is pairing with a plain stipe or gingam check in matching colors. It brings calm and structure to a room with lots of ”toiles” and is beautiful also as backing on cushions, on tabourettes, or seats. Makes all the patterns (especially a collection of different ones) less overwhelming, and gives more structure and elegance than using plains.
I like to think of it as a balamce between the dainty curvy feminine and masculine linear structure of a space.
Also have a look at bed canopy design drawings from the past. What would look perfect if you don’t want to have the lengths encapsulating the back bed frames sides is to bring them out on the wall right and left just a bit, and fasten with the type of decorative brass fixtures used to hang drapes at windows (can’t think of the English term sorry).
The canopy will look it’s best if the back of the bed is framed by the fabric and the eye can follow the lengths to the floor so the lengths aren’t stuck behind the bes frame itself and chopping them off.
Just an aesthetic thing, since you tucked them all the way back, which was a pity with all the work and beautiful fabric.
So sorry for your little Petit Pois! 💔
Unfortunaley you must really keep chicks when they’re very small underneath chickenwire or plastic mesh or the prey birds will swipe them one after another. It’s free luch to them. Lots of various falcons and even eagles in the French countryside, and it’s the sky you need worry about, (not foxes or cats so much) or you’ll lose most of your chicks unless perhaps you have good yard dogs around which birds of prey will tend to avoid.
Which is something I always wondered, why don’t you have a dog or two? A herding type/ farm breed perhaps? That will be happy with birds prancing around and off lead.
No chateau without a pair of good dogs, I say.
A couple of retrievers, any of the mountain dog breeds like Pyreneese or Bernese, Spanish Mastines, all very sweet animal tolerant dogs that won’t run off and will stay on the grounds and be good protection for chicks and any other small animals you may add later on.
    Great episode!

Oh I'm so sorry about Petit Pois! Poor little angel :( On a brighter note, you've done an absolutely magnificent job with the bed crown in your room. It has transformed the room into a sumptuous chateau bedroom! Bravo!

Always impressed by Philip's talent and devotion to you. He's a dear friend. Must say when I knew something sad had happened I thought of humans and pets and became quite nervous inside until hearing the poor little pea chick was missing. It was a good vlog with creative projects, my favorite. The mats and framing are beautiful. Andie is such a lovely part of the creative Lalande family.

A Rooster house in the garden is on the list to get them away from the Hens. The hens have a stone hen house and run in the garden. The peacocks can fly over the wall so they don't go into a shelter (where the wood and Jaguar are) unless they want to.

The bed crown is stunning..stunning and stunning. I took a photo of it and kept looking at it. I cannot have enough of its beauty
I am like you keep loosing my scissors. People loose their socks in the washing machine, i loose my scissors in my work room. I make curtains and upholstery and bought 6 scissors that kept in every corner of my work room, but still manage to loose them.

Rest in peace, little Petit Pois, you had a good life and one bad moment. That’s what our farmer grandfather taught us grandchildren. Your Couronne de Lit is magnificent, Stephanie! And I love how you complete, complement it and the bed with different toiles. I did the same in my bedroom, using an antique 19th century toile valance with the original ball fringe and matching side panels. I found a pile of quilted toile at an antique market and I had enough to upholster a small bench and slipper chair and covered a long bolster. Sewing and seeing it come together is so much fun! I am glad that it helped you cope and lift your spirit despite grieving for Petit Pois. He is definitely over the rainbow. I am keeping Isabel and Percy in my thoughts. Godspeed all around!

The bed crown is exquisite! You did a lovely job of it and your helpers, also. Phillip is a very special helper that becomes your springboard for wonderful ideas....you both compliment the other! It is a pleasure to see it all evolve! Thank you!💝

Stephanie I see you were all trying to understand the amount of fabric of the toile curtain panels. I have had a curtains made for a few rooms in my home and they make each panel 3 times the width of the window to create a full look. I do like the look much more however the price of the purchasing so fabric... not so much?
