    Thank you for the detailed review. Some of the issues you experience have possible solutions listed below:
    #1 The access port flaps are fastened with velcro so they can be removed and readjusted. It might take some adjustment to make it completely lightproof.
    #2 The mask's weight is a complex problem to solve for us. First, I would try to tighten the head strap on the top (the middle head strap). This makes it, so more weight is supported by the head strap and not your nose. It is also possible to clip on weight on the back leather part of the head strap to alleviate the weight on the nose.
    #3 The padding is also fastened with velcro, so adjusting to keep the rough edge away from the nose is possible.
    #4 The price is set because of our patented lens technology that projects the full phone image to each eye. As a result, you get a higher resolution than if you split the phone image in two and send one picture to each eye.

      The access ports should be sealed with nylon brush instead of neoprene flaps. The brush can be attached at one or more edges and will move aside for your finger and spring back into position when your finger is removed, similar to what happens when you poke your finger through a paint brush. High quality commercial rolling steel doors use this brush astragal for guide weatherstripping. It blocks light, conforms to irregular surfaces and will spring back to its original position whenever it's not being displaced by something (like a finger).
      I will expect a generous royalty on the sale of Dronemask 3 with this feature.

      I doubt that adding weight to the back of the strap will help with the comfort level on the nose. Maybe experiment with more comfortable padding and shorten the overall length of the apparatus. I don't see the $200 dollar value either, at most this maybe like a $75 mask..

  • @beechlinbeauty
    @beechlinbeauty Pƙed rokem +3

    I don't understand the choice of "Velcro flaps" to solve the access to screen problem, to me it's sort of obvious that these will never settle back into place when used. (you disturb the velcro seal and then can't reseat them). Personally i'd have gone for access holes (circular) seald with a soft rubbber disc, split evry 90 degrees or every 45 degrees from the circumference to the middle. These would allow the user to insert their finger to access the screen and self seal when the finger is withdrawn. Call it a simple self sealing valve, if you like. The issues concerning COG, heavy phone placed far forward of the face, should be solvable by a bettter headstrap adjustment and larger soft pad at the back of the head and possibly lighter materials?
    I love what this system offers, an FPV experience without the enormous expense of added electronics. A simple and elegant solution because every drone pilot is also going to own a phone, for me the purchase price is still too high and i'm sure it prevents many more prospective customers from commiting to purchasing.
    It's great to see that Dronemask is listening to customer's and trying to improve it's product, reducing the price would be the only direction to go in my opinion. Instead of including USB cables (who doesn't have a ton of those arround the house already!), drop the price to a more affordable level and maybe more people will be tempted to give them a try.

    • @JohnCuppi
      @JohnCuppi  Pƙed rokem

      Yeah, these are some excellent points. DroneMask could be a great product for the right price, but unless they go beyond making a D-grade effort to actually listening to customers AND improving things, is never gonna happen.
      It seems so obvious that velcro seals were not a good idea. We're just a couple of drone hobbyists here in the youtube comments, and we figured it out. So it begs the question, how did this ever pass to make it to production? They did not do enough testing in my opinion, or they had bad testers that told them "everything is great." This is not rocket science, and it is not hard to figure out. I get it that they're a small company, but this is not an excuse to give them a pass.
      DroneMask should actually look at what DJI did with their new Integra goggle that I just reviewed. Adding a head pillow/pad and a lock strap mechanism that stays in place, and helps pull the goggle up off the face.
      By the way, about the cable... I agree that if they were just going to raise the price to include retail cost of cables, then they shouldn't have bothered. You would probably be surprised about how many iPhone users in particular simply do not have a USB-C to Apple lightning cable. As an iPhone user, I have had no real need to buy one. đŸ€·â€â™‚ïž

      Phantom 3 advanced actually has a modification you can install to the transmitter to get HDMI output. Search up Phantom 3 advanced HDMI out. It is not going to be cheap, I think $100 for the radio mod. For goggles, there’s Skyzone Cobra S which I believe accept HDMI input on 800x600 resolution. Those are $160 though because they are also real FPV goggles with an included analog video receiver too, if you have any interest in doing FPV with other drones. I’m not sure about any cheaper options, that’s quite an expensive setup but if money isn’t an object then it would be superior over the DroneMask.

    I am using the Drone Mask 2 and for the price is... pretty OK. Reasons:
    ordinary cheap VR glasses need an app that DOES not work with DJI apps, only with Litchi. So most of VR glasses that cost less or close to this ALSO have to be with phone inside, which means MENU is totally unacessable. So Meek. After trying to "make the think" I didnt suceeded with VR glasses there is NO alternative to do that for DJI drones that DO NOT support FPV Gogless.... Fly app does not give anymore VR option, so an external screen means you need extra cables and connectors in order to connect it with.. some sort of gogless with built in screen. Most of the gogless you cnow ...they cost a lot more. A lot of apps even for games do not work with VR apps. I think for the price that costs it is pretty good product. Since it is a SIGNLE lence I dont see any other way this to be with less weight except if they dont make it only from foam ( there was a similar product with foam only and for some reason it dissapeared and people ware actually complaining that it weights even more than DM ). I am using this product with Autel Nano, DJI Air 2S, Mini 2, and Inspire 1. With a phone 6,5 inches ( Samsung A52 ) - work phone only to controll drones it is enough. I belive if the product gets popular the price will come down.

      The best you're going to do is a $20 dollar phone-holder VR glasses, paired with litchi app that lets you split the image and fly drone. You have to quickly take it down when something happens and take it of the holder, so it's not as nice as the drone mask but it's FAR cheaper. Litchi app is $30 and you can get the VR phone glasses for $20 bucks anywhere. You will have a lot of the same problems though with a heavy phone that we did no matter what. There is really no way to have a "great" experience with any of these solutions.
      I would possibly reevaluate exactly why you want to fly the DJI Air 2S with Goggles in the first place. If it's to improve your visibility in the sunny conditions for example, I think spending that money on the DJI RC with the FHD display is much more worth your while. That was the main reason my friend Patrick bought the DroneMask, but since the RC with FHD was made compatible with the Mavic Air 2S, he decided to get that instead.
      Unfortunately, as you said, DJI has not made the Air 2S compatible with any of their official goggles. If, for whatever reason, you MUST fly this FPV and the cost does not matter, I'm afraid the dronemask is probably your only option if you want to stick with the official DJI Fly App.

    A very simple solution would be for the flaps to be on the outside rather than inside with a magnet to hold them into place. Then you could easily and quickly open it with one hand to stick your finger in and the magnet would snap it back into place automatically. And as for the weight we have to be fair, most of that comes from your phone. Any mask where youre basically wearing your phone on your face youre going to have this issue even with the regular insert vr goggles. Theres nothing the company can really do about that. But yes i agree it should definitely be a lot cheaper. Its not much different than the $20 vr goggles it just has a single lens that doesn't require split screen vr apps. I think these are a much better product as far as a movie mask, but if I had to guess, it probably has not sold very well marked toward it. It sounds like they tried for sure....but not everything that looks good on paper turns into a well functioning product, lol. The flaps are a great idea, but I agree that if they were smaller and maybe used rubber rather than thin material they would sit much better once your finger is removed. Also, that weight is wayyyyy higher than I thought it would be even without the phone. I just tried mine out for the first time. I picked up on all the comments these reviewers made, but IMHO, they really aren't a big deal. A little light will come in after a flap is opened to change a mode, say from record to picture, but not a lot. I can solve that easily with some velcro attached to the flap(s) so I can pull it shut and tight after opening it. Easy Peasy. I agree when changing modes, the flaps can cover the control, so in a way you're doing it blind. But for my purposes, the only setting I will ever be changing once I start flying is a picture to record. Whether they're overpriced or not, I can't answer because I haven't tried all the others. But it serves its purpose, I'm not fighting to see my iPhone screen on a bright sunny day, and it's worth the price to me. PS, I prefer just to run the cable through the zipper.

      Happy they worked out for you and great comment!
      It’s been a while since this review, but I think my frustration with them is that half of the issues we had with DroneMask2, are just poor design decisions that could possibly be corrected. Functionality, accessibility, and fitment could be improved if DM wanted to listen.
      We were also kind of excited to unbox the “prototype” dronemask2 and see what they had done. The changes from dronemask1 were a major let down. The solution was a very lazy “V2.” Better than the first, but could have been so much more

      @@JohnCuppi I understand. I've thought of ways to reduce the flap issue and you might have hit on it. They probably don't need to be nearly that large. Just enough to get a finger through. It looks like they tried to make some improvement to first version of these goggles. The flaps on the side to access your screen was a good idea, but needed to figure how to do it without adding light leak. But I don't know they solve the problem of todays larger cell phones adding too much weight to front of the goggles. And these goggles still seem a bit overpriced for what your getting. Great review by both John and Patrick, thanks for sharing.

    What is the alternative? I guess I'll take your advise, save the money, stick my Mini 2 in a drawer and spend $6 or $800 on an FPV drone. BTW, how does that save money?

    • @JohnCuppi
      @JohnCuppi  Pƙed rokem +1

      Actually, it's the DroneMask that will end up in the drawer unused. After you take it out for a few times and realize it is an annoying as hell experience, you won't want to use it. The Mini 2 will still be the great camera quad it was intended to be, though.
      We are not alone in our take on this product - many have literally purchased it, saw our video having run into similar issues, told us they wish they had watched this first and they didn't waste their money.
      So, look, if you want to fly your Mini 2 FPV that badly and that's your ONLY goal, then go ahead and buy it. You are informed about the flaws we encountered, so if you buy it knowing that, and are willing to deal with it, I see no problem.
      An alternative? Well, just because there isn't a cleanly package alternative does NOT necessarily make a poorly executed product worth buying. Best of luck, who knows, maybe you'll be happy with it. đŸ€ž

    I don't know why you are so worried about having to constantly click on the screen and thus completely peel off the covering layer of those holes. After all, I set it up before the start, and I fly, I tune the rest with the controller, after all, no one flies in the air for an hour straight to need to constantly tune something. After all, we have a controller where you can set a lot of commands to the click. I admit that the price tag is high, but if you take the phone classically or in this way, I choose this one.

    • @JohnCuppi
      @JohnCuppi  Pƙed 2 měsĂci

      I change EV bias a lot as well between shots and I don't know if that can be assigned to a button or not on the RCN1. I literally do this via the option in the lower area of the screen to make sure subject isn't improperly exposed by the automatic settings.
      QuickShots / MasterShots are also really useful to me, and this setup makes them a pain. Circle mode, for example can rotate around an object more accurately than I can on the sticks. You can get to them but you need to guess where they are, and some of the lower options are blocked unless you scroll.
      Which is another point: for the most part, you're right, I won't change my actual video settings from 4k @ 24 or 4k @ 60. But if you want to access cool features like the dolly zoom on the Air 2, you have to be in 1080p. So there may be a point that you want to switch out to get to that.
      If your plan is to just set everything in auto and fly, then sure, that'll work, but the clunky access to change settings on a camera bird is indeed a deal breaker for some. And the sad thing is, all they had to do was come up with a more creative idea than throwing down some floppy fabric straps.

      This is a good idea, actually, and is probably one of the best options for having control over the screen.
      But, it also means that you are stuck ensuring that you have a flat, level surface to put a mouse on.
      And, if you’re going to just use mouse then that right there is another reason to consider not paying for DroneMask and buying cheaper goggles. At least half of the appeal of DroneMask 2 is the access flaps to get to the menus without needing ANOTHER device. Well, it’s supposed to be, anyway.
      Great suggestion though, thank you for taking the time to comment. 👍😎

    They still missed to check the product BEFORE releasing it.
    Now it has improved but still too short.
    The weight in the back is not solution until you might replace the strap over the head with a kind of helmet but I doubt .
    I do still have and fly a Mavic 2 Pro with the DJI goggles racing edition and that has such helmet style ring and battery weight in the back of the head but still heavy.
    The finger touch must work well, so they need a kind of curtain and a more balanced version cause otherwise it will not work.
    But the core issue is the high amount of mass far away from your eyes (depending on the weight / size of your phone) and I had tried some of these 3 or 4 years ago cause my best screen is usually the phone. Regarding touch control there could also be a way of a kind of remote in theory that could be used to jump and click through the menus and get back (ESC), but that would require a good bt remote cause a USB connected remote would not really work cause then the whole thing would become a mess with such connector on the phones edge.
    It needs quite more thoughts and prototypes to get that right and useable but I bet there is a market for 2 big reasons
    * phone has ususally best screen
    * people with glasses suffer from mosts of the other goggles cause they need box styled goggles like this one
    Good work and review and the best starting point they could get to build version 3 but hopefully this time as beta for testing and sharing.
    If they do it on their own without a test clinic or you as beta tester then it will takes ages to get a useable product.
    Good luck - and now I have to check where Missouri is cause the only things I know is the Battleship Missouri and that you are flying along the Mississipi so I have a glimpse where to look: somewhere in the middle most likely south of chicago / Illiiinois cause relatives have emigrate over a century ago to St. Louis and had written in their letters about Missouri and Kentucky.

      DroneMask reached out to me on October 4th to send a pair to test and provide feedback, but the reality is that DroneMask 2 at that point was already set in stone. The product was not going to change since they had set a launch day to be today. Had they contacted us months in advance to field test this, all of this feedback could have been provided to them to make an actual change BEFORE the launch. We would have loved to get the opportunity to send this feedback for them to make improvements. I am wondering if at this point there will even be a DroneMask 3, if after almost a year this is their best effort on the 2.

    Nice concept, but the price is outrageous. I might buy it for $20, never for $179. Btw, now you can buy a Bluetooth mouse controller for your phone, so you don't even need the flaps for your finger to touch the phone. BT works with the dronemask 1, too.
    P.s. buy the BT mouse controller that you hold in your hand n use your thumb to move the tiny joystick on top. Make sure you use a lanyard to attached it to your wrist. Not your regular table top mouse.

      It does a sub-par job for what they're asking for it -- that's probably the biggest issue. If they went back and addressed the issue with the flaps / light leak, and dropped the price by about $100 then they would not only make more sales but the experience would match the price for the product.

    I would advise anyone serious about FPV to not waste their money. I've been flying drones for years including Phantoms, Mini 2, Mavic Pro, S800 and Inspire using different headsets and found the Drone Mask 2 to be overpriced and flawed. The view straight forward is pretty good but the division between the two sides of the lens will block the view to the edge of the screen from the far eye. Phone used was a Galaxy S8. What's worse is "customer service" didn't respond to two emails for 3 weeks until I filed a PayPal claim. Now they want me to send it back to Norway from the United States. The shipping cost would be horrendous. Then they did the Chinese trick of offering a 50% discount to keep it, even though I explained to them it was worthless to me because of the design flaw. Just a lousy experience.

      This is one of the reasons we lean so hard into criticism of this product, and some people don’t understand that. I agree with you.
      If they charged no more than $80-$100 USD shipped with cables and everything included, then ok - if they fixed just a couple of the flaws with it like the crappy flaps.
      I could let go of the heavy phone issue, but when they’re telling me I should try to put even more weight on my head to counter balance the damn thing
 at this price, come on
