  • When I first saw that this movie was coming out, I was interested to see how (and why) they'd play this out. Many of you messaged me to see if I'd watched it, and I hadn't at the time. But now I have. Here are my thoughts on 'The Secret: Dare to Dream.' And it wasn't what I thought it would be.

I haven't seen this movie, so I can't base any opinion on actually seeing it... But I feel that a lot of the time the "subtle" things can be the most dangerous. Because if you aren't really looking for these things or aware of these things they can work their way into your head and potentially draw you in without being aware of it. And the title itself subtly leads you to the book The Secret.

Click bait, oversimplistic and not spiritual were the 3 words that jumped out at me from your review. I agree with you this movie was click bait to reel in people with this oversimplistic philosophy that is very SPIRITUAL. The idea is to draw people in, not to overload them with this demonic idea but make them curious and see how wonderful it is. This is how the devil plants ideas in our heads. If he was in our face, we would easily recognize him and avoid him. But subtlety is key! You can find these demonic ideas in every movie. 😲

This is a little late... But I just went back and watch this movie recently. Then, decided to watch this video again. I think the movie itself has a very good "spiritual" message. If you come from a Christian mindset and have never read The Secret, what you get is a message of "trust in God", "trust that there is a plan" even when things seem dark, and helping others with no thought of "good karma" or a quid pro quo with God. I even like that Bray is on the look out for what I see as subtle "Holy Spirit nudges". As for the whole magnet metaphor... Having been a "glass is half empty" thinker, I can tell you looking at the "glass is half full" does lead to better responses from me which does influence the world in a positive way. And speaking of New Agers...
In reading my Bible the other day, the following verse (courtesy of St. Paul) literally jumped out at me:
"While people are saying, 'Peace and safety,' destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape." (1 Thessalonians 5:3; NIV).
In other words, even "feel good" romantic dramas cannot protect those who do not believe in salvation by grace.

The fact is that such men are pseudo-emissaries: they tell lies about their work and masquerade as emissaries of the Messiah. There is nothing surprising in that, for the Adversary himself masquerades as an angel of light; so it’s no great thing if his workers masquerade as servants of righteousness. I watched this movie with my family, and didn't see the title beforehand; they just started watching it. In that pizza scene or in other scenes where the guy was clearly saying things that were in line with the law of attraction or word of faith, I commented to my family that this is a new age movie.
I was just surprised that we were even watching it.
My feelings at the end were what a lot of people have commented, that this is a type of gateway movie. Though my parents are strong Christians, and they are in the Word daily, they wouldn't have recognized the law of attraction and new age doctrines interspersed throughout the film right away. It's a feel good film that glorifies, and almost deifies, positive thinking, but since it's good to be positive, most people wouldn't give that idea a second thought.
For me, I went to a church that preached this doctrine in a subtle way, and I would have believed that doctrine completely if not for being in the word and being warned through apologists like you on CZcams. Subtlety really is the weapon of the evil one, but the clear and concise truth of God's Word is the shield against him... That's why I am so encouraged by you and others like you on CZcams who bring deceptions to the light through pointing out what God actually says in His Word. Messages like that are what the Church needs to hear and proclaim every day.

They will make more. The title shows that. For example, The Secret: Dare to Live (or something like that). They will be able to add more and more of this concept into each movie. I agree with the other poster, it’s a gateway film. Thank you for the review! I watched this and was immediately aware of the new age concepts although I’ve never been an “intentional” new-ager.

Can you please do a video on Theosophy, its goal of a universal religion, and it’s relation to the United Nations? From my own scant research, I was even able to connect a current Bethel pastor to him speaking at a Theosophical Society talk many years ago. This runs into the new age philosophy that is within the Christian churches now.

I had to watch the movie first before seeing your review. I can see how it could be dangerous for untrained minds, but I thought it was just a cute romantic movie. I put the rest of it aside. I think it's no different than watching movies with the "spirit" of Christmas or where Santa claus grants a wish. Usually if I'm watching something like this with my kids, I would point out the fallacies or the sneaky way "they" are trying to program us away from God. The funny thing is I didn't realize I do this until my daughter did the same about a month ago and said, "moma, that's something you would say". Anyway, I had a few eye rolls through this movie but found their secret message so subtle that it didn't ruin the movie for me.

I would agree. I actually watched this movie not knowing anything about the Secret and before I saw this review. I just thought it was a nice romantic drama with some "silliness" but nothing to get me to turn it off. I thought the Mother In Law was brilliant but wrong in forcing her into a relationship with Mr Moneybags. I also thought the (angry) reaction when Katie Holmes found out that he was being subversive about why he was there was realistic and not really over the top. Maybe thats me. There is usually - it seems - an undertone to most if not all movies you see as they are made in the image of the creator wherever that person is coming from, we have to focus on God and if it is offensive to us then either don't watch it or if you start it - turn it off or walk out.

I watched it with my mom and sister one night I while back when I thought it was biblically sound (my mom explained it as another term for faith) but I still had many doubts and it didn’t seem all that right. I am glad that I don’t believe it anymore, but my mom and sister still do (along with other new age ideas). I feel really alone with no one to confide in (my dad now believes divorce is okay and is divorcing my mom). Now that I see the issues of LOA I can see the issues of the movie, too.

Haven't seen it other than previews myself, but I agree with you about how the all positive approach can be toxic and insensitive. As someone who struggles with "invisible" issues in my family/kids/self like anxiety, OCD, ADHD, ASD, depression, etc. people who say to just change the way you think are very annoying. Training one's brain to choose one's thoughts (biblical) is a different idea than just "toss out the negative" (think positive) because a lot of life is in reality the result of a fallen world. Love your content--keep it up Melissa.

  • @rockandsandapologetics7254

Jack, you took the words right out of my mouth. Melissa, you've been on both sides of the law of attraction. At one point in your life it was the go to philosophy, but then you met Jesus and all that changed. This movie wasn't created to be an overtly law of attraction movie, but it was to have enough in there that people who were seeking some truth to live by and didn't know Jesus, they would be drawn to this, and being drawn to it, become enslaved by it. Doesn't this remind you of another similar movie, Miracle on 34th Street, where a replacement Santa, who just happens to have the name Kris Kringle, has this same giving attitude. He and a bachelor work on a single mom and her daughter. Both are hard nuts to crack, but the daughter holds out for the house she asked Santa for (I mean Kris) and when does she get that house? At the end of the movie when the bachelor and the single mom are taking a different route through the suburbs and see a house for sale. The girl tels them to stop. They figure theire's no harm in looking at the house. They go in, find Kris' cane, hear the girl's squealing about it being just the house she asked for. It's then these two adults decide to get married and give the girl the house. It's almost an exact duplicate of The Secret: Dare to Dream, well updated and you have a stranger who isn't Santa, but you get the drift. Now people all over watch Miracl on 34th Street because it's a great Christmas romance movie. But what are they buying into in the process?

Although it feels very subtle that is the danger as I feel it was more in your face people would have been turned off by it. This is just a law of attraction about how to get a relationship but done again very subtle way if you notice every thing is by chance she starts thinking differently and her life changes when her thoughts change. The secret was what he had in the envelope as didn’t have that seal with an s on it. And how the check was the exactly the same amount as her debt

Kevin Rider - They're taking lessons from the Christian films, like the Love Comes Softly series. Give people a good feel good story they can recommend to someone else that doesn't seem too weird propagandaish, but sprinkled with a message and connected with the symbol of the Secret which will bring up all it's connected internet cookies and who knows possibly a sequel that delves in even deeper. May be that free movie they play at movie night at the libraries. I wouldn't recommend it or speak of it in a way that may stir a desire in someone to watch it, like it, and recommend it. Too many people when talking about movies they like may mention it and possibly someone may be drawn into it's teaching. The only thing the rabbit sees before it goes into the trap is the carrot. The same happens in churches and with music , it's all in the draw and the subtleties.

Your right about the hollywood clickbait it is that and it's most likely licensing. The film studio/ production company probably had a licensing agreement for the I.P. and per agreement they had so much time to produce the film before the license laps. So they quickly push the movie attached a director, script actors etc...the script could have been a recycled script adjusted for the secret theme/ I.P.

    Melissa! You’re missing it....
But you helped me see it in this description. I haven’t seen the movie but think about it:
What does everyone want? A happily ever after.... it’s sprinkled because it’s suggesting this is WHY the happily ever after happened. Usually when you have a Romantic Drama, there is no “solution” posed to the watcher on how to GET those things.... it’s usually just like a doe eyed sigh and dreaming mentality at the end of this kind of movie.... but it’s toxic. Think about it: it’s not ignoring the law of attraction... it’s showing it at work. Bray is a “Jesus character”... he’s the savior in it. He has the secret to all of their problems. It’s not sprinkled... it’s woven!! I would assume (since I haven’t seen the movie) that throughout the movie as he’s trying to give her something positive.... the solution to ALL her problems... she is too focused on her “negative thinking” the whole time... so the envelope blows away or it’s not the right time... or whatever....but as her and her kids learn to “think positively” things start to go the right way. AND it’s targeting the children!!!! Any kid who starts to believe when they are younger that you can do something expecting... it’ll happen. I think back to the move with Whoopi Goldberg (don’t remember the name of it) where she blew at the traffic lights and they turned green. I thought for most of my childhood that I could do that... or walk through walls or move things wirh my mind and that I just wasn’t trying hard enough. This movie is a subtle introduction to the secret. I would assume especially on CZcams that people will start seeing ads on the secret and get introduced. This is the most subtle and effective intro to it. It plays with the emotions. It’s more of a romantic drama bc it has to be about all the “feel goods” and what you can GET. And then it plays it out through the whole thing. Like the “vision board” essentially when the little girl draws her pony over and over and always wanted it... a desire of her heart that hasn’t left. Now there’s a way to get it. They know about their critics... they wouldn’t be so blatant now.

I use to study gurus like Bob Proctor and law of attraction, theosophy stuff like “The Science of Getting Rich” by Wallace Wattles (former FreeMason).
I have to say… they can make self improvement mystical and wax poetically… but they say things that seem profound that truly aren’t.
They championed the idea that they meld “science and religion together” which makes the whole field attractive to truth seekers.
Bob proctors formula was a little different, he taught: change your paradigm, through changing thoughts you change beliefs, which change action, thus creating you as a new person.. therefore it *seems* as though the things you wanted begin to materialize in your life, but that’s because you changed yourself.
Visualization, yea useful too, sports athletes do it often, but if they didn’t do the other 30 fundamentals *action oriented* things that make them great, it would do nothing.
The secret/law of attraction/paradigm shifting is a small piece of a goal setting pie, they just sprinkle mystical new age language around it.
