This was my experience growing up-solid student, had nice game too as a point guard; but my younger brother was a high school basketball superstar, tall and light-skinned… it gets much deeper but let’s just say, ninety-seven out of a hundred times, the academic route pays in the long run.
Nah, it's more like 99.99925 out of a hundred times, the academic route pays off in the long run. An average high school class in the US will have 1.1 million athletes. Out of that 1.1M, only 853 on average end up going to the pros. That means only ~0.00075% of HS athletes end up getting paid to play.

I'm the same way, his brain is focused on more important matters. Not to say sports are not good. Just that there are things more important. He is a good son and a good man, a True Blessing. In the end sports and grades are good. But being a kind, empathetic and compassionate human being is what true success is.
Charles Barkley brought this up as an important talking point of American Black Culture…
That there’s too many black parents trying to push their kids into becoming athletes or entertainers. And not enough parents encouraging them to enter medicine, law, computer science, corporate management, etc etc etc
The odds of becoming a successful athlete or entertainer are slim to none. But through hard work and determination you actually can enter into a modest career field. It may not be extremely glamorous but it covers the bills, puts good food on the table, can help support a family, ensures a safer environment and provides more opportunities for your own future kids…
Just a thought.
Charles Barkley is not an expert on anything but basketball; he certainly isn't educated on the subject on which he speaks. The guy speaks in stereotypes with no actual facts or awareness of wider societal factors at play. Just because he's black and well-known doesn't make him an expert on the black community. The problem with your mindset and Charles Barkley's is that a lot of black people in America are born into segregated neighborhoods where schools and resources in general are VERY poorly funded. Black school districts receive about 20% less money than white ones. Many black kids are born into neighborhoods where medicine, law, and computer science are all just as unreachable as the NBA. This is due to the aforementioned inequalities in education funding in segregated/black neighborhoods. Many kids who graduate from schools in segregated minority areas do NOT graduate being prepared for ANY of the fields you mentioned because the schools that they graduated from were not equipped to prepare them for those fields. They can't compete with the kids graduating from other school districts.
Many black kids graduate with good or EXCELLENT grades from their poor/segregated school, then get accepted to schools like University of Michigan, Ohio State, University of Illinois, etc. When they get there, many of them are overwhelmed and can't keep up with the coursework. It's very confusing for them and makes them feel less intelligent than the other students because they did so well in high school and can't understand why they're struggling so badly, while the other kids aren't. Unbeknownst to them, it's not because they're less intelligent than the other kids; it's because they were just not exposed to the same material in their K-12 years that the other kids were exposed to. Their poor/segregated school did not have the resources to adequately prepare them - particularly in STEM areas - so there's much material that they've never seen that the other kids saw in high school. It's not that these kids CAN'T grasp the material - it's that they were never given the opportunity to do so, and now it's too late because you're supposed to already know that material before you enter college. Also, the resources have also not been there to provide training in trades, so even if a child doesn't do 4-year college, they're not prepared for a trade either.
So, the parents did their due diligence and pushed for academic excellence in K-12, and the child achieved excellence in K-12, yet the child still ended up failing college and not being prepared for the job market - all because of the school district where they're from. It's a HUGE problem. This is PRECISELY why the ghetto is so hard to leave, and why sports has been such a huge deal in many of these communities. Hard work and academic achievement in those areas often does not mean success. Again, it's a HUGE problem. It's an American societal failure. It's not an issue with those black people's mindsets. They're only acting based on their reality and actual statistical facts.

What I hate so much about this situation is that when they all move out it'll be the non-sport focus kid expected to then care for the parents while the rest get low paying jobs after sports doesn't work out with them. "You need to bring that 92% up" was too real for me. I would literally bring home all A's and my dad would always look somewhat disappointed and say I need to bring them up higher. No Bs, my lowest grade would be a 96% while my brothers highest was like an 85% and somehow I'm the one getting a lecture about how I need to apply myself more. I did this while doing Track, Indoor Track, and cross country so I was participating in a sport from August to May and it still wasn't enough. Like I understand being strict and wanting your child to achieve more but you can't be significantly harder on one child versus the other. And my brother played soccer which my dad resonated with more so maybe that's why my brother got the better treatment who really knows.
Don’t even try make you’re dad proud. Even if you got all 100% he’s gonna be like ‘ok, I kinda don’t give a shit’

Where would be now if I had 20 years of pure dedication to my craft in art.
I would probably have my own tattoo shop or have my own independent comic book company right now. Smh. Good luck to the next young artist. Stay dedicated to your craft even if you're own family don't believe in you.
Every time I hear "early 2000s" I think of Flightreacts NBA videos. That besides the point, art is one of the most skillful talents in the world and I definitely believe you would have made it if you continued. Sad that people don't appreciate your talent unless you become successful rather than supporting you to begin with. Great message at the end of your comment and you're a man of culture. W DBZ art
Basing ths reply off your comment. Getting encouragement from family is a bonus, but its not the end all of the situation. Them not caring and them discouraging you are 2 different things.
