  • Could Florida State officially declare their exit from the ACC this month? There have been hints dropped from college football reporters and analysts, including Josh Pate from 247Sports, that something big could happen this month within the ACC. Another CFB personality claims Florida State could make some sort of move on July 13th. But what can really happen this month? The ACC and FSU seem nowhere near a settlement or a court ruling. It seems impossible that FSU could announce they are accepting a bid to a different conference without confirming tampering. Could something this big happen so quickly?
Hosts Alex Donno and Kenton Gibbs discuss the latest on the rumor mill. The guys also talk about SMU, Cal, and Stanford officially joining the conference as of July 1st. Kenton takes a victory lap at the rumors claiming the ACC would collapse by June 30th. That date came and went! The guys break down which of the new schools brings the most value. Kenton explains why SMU is the clear choice despite a rich history from Stanford and Cal.

Why do people think that once FSU and Clemson leaves that the ACC is done? Big12 survived Texas and OU leaving. It’s just 2 teams with the most value but there should be enough left to have a conference.

Because it is the big-12 fans promoting that view point to poach ACC teams and to bolster their conference with a reputation of now being more stable somehow.
The other contingent is FSU fans who have been malcontents with not meeing their own expectations for years and want the ACC to bleed to feel important like USC, Oregon, Texas, Oklahoma.
If they can convince the ACC to collapse perhaps everyone gets to poach ACC teams (that they hate so much) for free.

Cal and Stanford are the only schools left that give ESPN access to the state California. UCLA & USC are Big 10 bound remember?
Stanford always had the option of going independent. Stanford is the wealthiest.
The Cal stadium debt has a very low long term interest rate. It comes from geological earthquake issues. Cal literally chose to invest in their stadium. The California government can always insure to take care of it's Flagships be it Calimony or subsidies.
Cal has the most untapped athletic potential since they have to try now. Stanford can fix their issues immediately by just reorganizing the Athletic endowment. Tons of talent in the Bay area that wants to stay home while being power 5.

This has probably already been said, but FSU or any school officially announcing their exit should tell you that they expect there will be a settlement reached to financially execute their exit. Crazy enough, even if FSU settles on $300 million and has to pay that number out in equal payments over the life of the ESPN/ACC agreement through 2036, they'd only be on the hook for $25 million a year. If they joined the B1G or SEC, that would put them at roughly the same amount of money they'd have made in the ACC. I believe sometime around 2030, both conferences will re-negotiate with their networks, correct?
Even with the huge debt, it's still advantageous for FSU to vacate the ACC. The sooner, the better.
Edit: the "sweetheart deal" that ESPN has with the ACC won't be so sweet to them when their meal tickets leave.

Wow - times have change. It wasn’t long ago that fans of ACC schools would have considered it an insult to compare the ACC to the Big 12, and now these same fans keep pointing to the Big 12 as proof that their conference can survive. Even though the Big 12 lost it two most valuable members and the ACC is about to do the same, the big difference between why one conference will survive and the other will not is simply “timing”.
The Big 12 was able to bring in the best 4 available G5 schools and 4 valuable PAC-12 schools after their conference imploded. All the ACC has been able to do is bring 3 schools that no one including the Big 12 wanted in anticipation of losing FSU, Clemson, and UNC. The Big 12 was able to negotiate a 6 year media rights contract that pays them significantly more after the loss of Texas & Oklahoma. Yormark claimed that the “timing” was optimal in the media rights market to negotiate a new contract and so he did. That media rights market has only gotten worse with the networks declining profits and the PAC-12 wasn’t able to negotiate a comparable contract after a year of trying. The media rights market has only continued to get worse making the ACC’s situation far more like the PAC-12 rather than the Big 12. ESPN is not likely to extend the ACC contract without their biggest brands. Like so many things in life, it comes down to “timing”.

I don't know, but ACC/B1G schools share a lot of characteristics on the academic front. This alone would be a reason to bid Clempson/FSU and Louisville (?) adieu to SEC/B12. SEC would be forced to partner with B12 in this scenario which will hurt their private brands tremendously. @johnlane9234 Funny Calford , Notre Dame, Pop Warner story....Calford were the original PAC2 they started playing whoever they could find with institutional parity, they didnt have much luck.due to geographical limitation, Stanford / Washington was first (1893), then Stanford /Utah (1902) both times Stanford used the rails and brought a contingent. 1902 was the same year of the first Rose bowl, the first time Stanford played Michigan, USC was still getting beat by high schools . Michigan (coached by Fielding Yost) pummeled Stanford, and the game was called short. After the Rose bowl, Stanford decided to get their act together. Unfortunately, all that did was terminate in many boring shutouts against the available Western competition. CALford withdrew from Varsity football in 1905 right after they played the final Big Game, which was the next game after Stanford played USC(another shutout) for the first time...Stanford finally reactivated their varsity team in 1919, and by 1924 got their first invite to the ROSE BOWL in the Stadium. The Rose committee wanted to pair Pop Warner's squad against Knute Rockne's favorite roster of his career. So Cal goes sniping in Stanford's ear to refuse the invite because ND is a low-grade institution 😆 . In the backdrop, USC is livid because Stanford played Utah and left SC off the schedule. So, while Calford are deciding what to do, USC goes behind their backs and wire's Notre Dame. They tell them to just come out anyways, and if Stanford backs out, SC will gladly play them. Stanford accepts the Rose. They lost even though Stanford's RB outrushed the entire four horsemen combined, they couldn't find the EZ. Warner was livid. They beat SC the next two years in the Colesium, which led to a Stanford national championship against BAMA. The proceeds from which funded DENNY Stadium in Tuscaloosa. USC used the 1924 ND kerfuffle to start their rivalry with ND. 😆

SMU more valuable than Stanford? Hmm, let's ponder that a bit .....when's the last time SMU beat a Top 5 team ? When's the last time they beat at top 20 team? SMU has a scheduled road rate(SRR) of 2.5, and Stanford's SRR is 9.5. They've scheduled 19 true road games against the eight (.700) teams 19 separate times in the last 20 seasons. I believe only Oklahoma State scheduled higher. Stanford has won 5 of the last ten trips to the LA colesium, which traditionally is the most difficult venue on the west coast.
Eastern football fans think the B1G rejected Stanford, but that's not quite the truth. Every B1G president wanted them, and still do. The problem was Stanford would only join as "football only". I dont know for sure, but my best guess is that Stanford has cold feet about entering into the requirements of the Big Ten Acedemic Alliance required by full members. Such an agreement would be an absoute treasure trove for B1G schools, a value potential worth exponentially more than any crumbs from football revenue. Fox said no to partial membership, and I've heard rumors that the Michigan AD was also against them joining(I have my own suspicions why that may be, it has to do with JH)
MICHIGAN vs. Notre Dame last 33 games 16-16-1
USC vs Notre Dame last 33 games 15-17-1
MSU vs Notre Dame last 33 games 13-20-0
Stanford vs Notre Dame last 33 games (Legends trophy) 13-20-0
Entire ACC vs Notre Dame last 33 games 4-29-0
Fantasy power conference : Oregon, Washington, Washington State, UCLA, Utah, West Virginia, Florida, Maryland, Minnesota, TCU, Baylor, Iowa State vs Notre Dame last 33 games...0-31-2
Stanford vs Nick Saban prepared bowl team(MSU)...38-0
Stanford vs Ohio State Buckeyes 3-2-0
Stanford may be down right now, but I'd stop short of calling them " out", and I dont believe SMU is more valuable.
What might Stanford be with an SRR of 5 like Oregon is used to? BAMA's SRR is 1

ESPN gets better Ratings off the ACC than it ever got off the B1G. That = $
ESPN has Invested $1 Million in the ACC Network and does not start to EARN the big payoff on that investment until THIS YEAR.
To keep the best possible ACC going for 12 more years is worth an EXTRA $2.5 Million for ESPN (plus the rest of the Income).
ACC teams will see their Revenue RISE by $16 Million EACH because they will no longer need to SPEND IT building the ACCN.
The ACCN has grown in Value by $3.5 Million EACH Last year and will grow by at least $10 Million EACH in the next 2 years.
These FACTS are all BUILT-IN and NOTHING can stop them. Not even schools Leaving.

1 automatic bid for the ACC, the other power 2 conferences get 2 bids. The writing is on the wall, and was before this new playoff model was decided. An undefeated ACC team couldn’t even get into the playoffs. Adding teams to simply keep a conference alive, is all a facade. This conference would have benefited with better and stronger leadership.

I am NOT believing some Internet show for two reasons: 1) FSU's been saying for nearly 1 year that they would leave this month (go check the show archives) and 2) NOBODY picked up that $572 million because FSU isn't worth that much money. Think about it: a team that went 3-6 in 2020 and 5-7 in 2021 is not worth that much.
