"This was, sort of, stepping out of our spacesuit and coming down to Earth and putting on a pair of Osh Kosh and digging the furrows ... we would have to bring the music in, to support the texts: Hunter's Holy Grail" - Mickey Hart
The three-CD set featuring the original album with newly remastered sound, plus an unreleased complete concert recorded on February 21, 1971 at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY.
The show was mixed from the 16-track analog master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Bob Weir’s Marin County TRI Studios and mastered by Grammy® Award-winning engineer, David Glasser, along with restoration and speed correction by Plangent Processes.

this is my favorite Grateful Dead album.
It's considered to be the best studio album ever made by the dead. I AGREE. Best live: Anthem of the sun. (Although sound is low).
One of my favorites too. The other is American Beauty
hmm...
I had to play the whole album 😎✌just stumbled over it a few days ago👍
@@mnmountainman9343 Tell all your friends Black Peter is far in the distance so let's have a HIGH TIME living the good life 🧬🥳😁
Singing is phenomenal. Stuck in my head, I sing it as I work.
When they introduced and toured this new album, I was at Fillmore East NYC to see it! Phil played bass most of the night in a big arm less rockin chair! The opening act was The Allman Bros. and the Fillmore was half empty! Pig Pen was still alive and played harp and Hammond Organ and did a vocal or two!
Nice! Legend timing
Oh TJ! If we knew then what we know now!! The Fillmore half empty😢I bet you got treated to an amazing show!!✌️☮️🎸
I can’t imagine the mind blogging that would happen if I could have seen the bros and dead in the same night. Two of the greatest live acts. The sheer power of Duane’s slide alone..
I am so jealous. Trying to paint a mental picture of the scene, and all I can come up with is myself in front of a young Jerry, with a smile on my face so big my checks hurt. Did I capture it pretty well? I think I did.
When I hear people talk about catching 1970's dead, or the really lucky ones who caught 60's dead, it is almost too much for my brain to process. I am, admittedly and proudly, an absolute, over the top, dead fanatic, and seeing them in an intimate venue in their early years would be too amazing to describe. I spend so much time just contemplating it, and it really kills me that I can never experience that.
I can never hear this song enough.
Please don't dominate the rap, Jack
If you've got nothing new to say
If you please, go back up the track
This train's got to run today
I spent a little time on the mountain
I spent a little time on the hill
I heard some say better run away
Others say better stand still
Now, I don't know but I been told
It's hard to run with the weight of gold
Other hand, I have heard it said
It's just as hard with the weight of lead
Who can deny? Who can deny?
It's not just a change of style
One step done and another begun
And I wonder how many miles
I spent a little time on the mountain
I spent a little time on the hill
Things went down, we don' t understand
But I think in time we will
Now, I don't know but I was told
In the heat of the sun a man died of cold
Keep on coming or stand and wait
With the sun so dark and the hour so late
You can't overlook the lack, Jack
Of any other highway to ride
It's got no signs or dividing lines
And very few rules to guide
I spent a little time on the mountain
I spent a little time on the hill
I saw things getting out of hand
I guess they always will
Now, I don't know but I been told
If the horse don't pull you got to carry the load
I don' know, whose back's that strong
Maybe find out before too long
One way or another
One way or another
One way or another
This darkness got to give
One way or another
One way or another
One way or another
This darkness got to give
One way or another
One way or another
One way or another
This darkness got to give
Good lord....
Now I don't know,
but I've been told
it's hard to run with
the weight of gold
Other hand, I've heard it said,
it's just as hard with the weight
of lead.
Some of best lyrics written in any American song.
The terrible tragedy at Altamont, gave birth to this gem of a dead song. Life certainly works in mysterious ways. To call me a dead fanatic would be a serious understatement. I am absolutely, 100 percent obsessed for life, and couldn't be happier about it.
I haven't listened to the dead in a long time, wow, they are awesome!!!
New remaster ay? Time to pop those edibles
Druggies rule the Fentanyl Black Hole of Happy Deaths!! YOU GO GIRL!
Been a Deadhead since my freshman year of high school...my friend's older brother was a fan and gave us a live show on cassette. Needless to say, I instantly fell in love. Now I just need to find me another kind soul who loves them as much as I do;) 😉🧡🧡🧡🧡
The dead are the bomb. I also fell in love instantly in high school to the wonders of American Beauty and Europe 72, which are still two of my all time favorites. The last show I saw was deer creek 95, and although there was alot of mixed feelings about the gate crashing, I was on three gel tabs and thought the show was amazing. They played so many of the songs I really wanted to hear, and when I was peaking they dropped into new Speedway and I was so happy, it was so intense and has always been one of my all time favorites, what a night!
Deer Creek Jello!
Tell it brother! I got divorced because my other couldn't stand the Dead. I fell in love in high-school. We would eat a tab and skip out when it kicked in. If you don't understand the Dead, I don't understand you lol. 😂
@@benringenberg2394 what? I'm just seeing this comment now. Great show you caught! 👏
@Jason Bauer wow! Too funny. My ex husband hated The Dead. Therefore he's my ex now. It is true what they say...if they don't get the Dead, they don't get you 💯
Love that the Dead made so many awesome songs that I can forget about New Speedway, and kinda get that feeling of hearing it for the first time.
One way or another
New Speedway is a great song, one of my favorites.
I totally get your point, the dead have so many wonderful songs out there. Have to say though....I could never forget New Speedway Boogie, it holds a very special place with me on a extremely competitive list of top tier Grateful Dead, and always will.
@@benringenberg2394 yeh, it's made it up there for me too now. Kind of a sucker for weeping Jerry myself though. Dire Wolf is it for me.
@@Blake_.Dryden dire wolf is definitely a nice one. I love all that acoustic American Beauty/Workingman's Dead era, box of rain, friend of the devil, operator, attics, breakdown. The fact that those two albums were put out the same year is absolutely mind blowing.
The Dead will never die!!
Oh yeah just what we all needed! Some remastered Dead to get us by(:
Have to admit, I am a fan of the remastered, bigtime.
New Speedway Boogie rocks the house. Absolutely one of my all time favorite dead songs. This one and passenger are my definition of the grateful dead getting down.
Badass tune
What this means to me is that yes history does repeat itself. But we can make it around! And our own!
You know they really should have called this tune One Way Or Another. Such a catchy refrain.
Astoundingly beautiful and prescient lyrics. Very deep meaning with a warning for us all.
This is one of the great songs . In a thousand years from now people will listen and understand what we were about.
What a great comment. Pretty cool to think about. I fucking love this song so much.
I don't know ,but I've been told
In the heat of the sun 🌞 men dying of cold
"a man died of cold"
Yeah I heard that too!
A great song from a great album.
Good God what a fantastic album
Good god!
You know it
I bless everyone to paint there masterpiece.
This with Anthem of the Sun and Terrapin Station 👍 the albums
this music is perfect
I know it's not their best album but it's forever my favorite. And I love this song so much as a 22 year old it's got a groove to it that I've never heard before. It's interesting looking back on Dead & co. As someone who didn't grow up during that time.
Timeless 🪃🎶💚🗝💚🎶🪃
Disagree I think it's their best studio work. Remember, the tech used in the latter years wasn't there
This is their Best Album.
Actually, this is their best album 😊
Always a good choice. Working man's dead
Let's boogie
Peace ✌ ☮
I almost bought the album mentioned above. Then I realized I don't even have a cd player any longer. Damn, tech moves so fast. I guess I could play it on my aging PC here but, even that is fading
Absolutely awesome love those Dead!
The strange part with the lyrics is that if you ain't got nothing new to say. When history actually repeats itself!
Best Dead album hands down
Live Dead
Blues for Allah
@@MarkAndrews12 thats a great one aswell.
Nah it’s the one with the raven on the cover, but workingman’s is full of gems
I can't to play this on my radio show tomorrow! (thanks)
This is actually a GOOD REMASTER. That's impossible.
I actually dug quite a few of the remastered. Check out passenger remastered...it is quite tasty, a personal favorite, with this one as well.
OOOOOYEAH MY FAVORITE GD JAM AT PRESENT
Lovely song 😎
I was born to be a deadhead 1957
I fucking love this song. Hunter Thompson talks about how this was one of his favorite dead songs in one of his books, cant remember which book, but when i read that i was so ecstatic, to hear one of my heroes give praise to one of my favorite songs, was just so gratifying. Does anyone know if Jerry and Thompson were friends, or if they ever met?
one way or another brothers and sisters.
Hell yeah
This song is so relevant in today's political climate.
Timeless Truths ~
(Politicians ~vs~ Leadership)
The day will come of peace. It might not be today or tomorrow. But it will come I feel it
The only thing I think of while listening to this song is how powerful a vocalist Jerry was. To be honest, never paid attention to what is being said.
I always liked the I don’t know but I’ve been told lines in it , but yes it makes me think of politics even today
Я люблю их. Это было непросто, чтобы было место в сердце ещё для кого -то, после Хендрикса, также сильно!
I love the the lyrics spent a little time on the mountain spent a little time on the hill things went down we don’t understand but in time I’m sure we will
Dead's can sound corny smt but they did worked hard on this LP, and I can't help but coming back to this track
":One way or another, this darkness got to end,,," God, I hope so. Jerry and the band's blues-shuffle response to the bad vibes and recriminations following the tragic fiasco at the Altamont Speedway free concert still reverberates in today's 2023 climate of evil politics and lies.

Absolutely
Whish Larkin Poe do a version of this song someday.
Would make a great army cadence
All remasters sound the same to me
Headphones and keep listening because the different masters via channels, you’ll eventually hear and appreciate
I'm going to go ahead and try it please don't hit me with a copyright strike I hope you like it I'll send you the link
Gentlemen this is my favorite song ever that I've ever heard from you guys I had to take it to come and see you all and Eugene when Jerry got sick and then I went to LA + 88 that was before this and my cousin made me sell the tickets that I want off of KLOS so that we could go to San Diego so what I'm asking you is can I use your music without a copyright strike on some of my videos it will be tasteful it will be real and it will be correct please allow me this thank you very much missing you especially since I never got to see you all live just one song that's all I ask be well my friend good luck on your journey
I caught a new speedway boogie once out of the ten shows I saw, the very last time I saw them, and let me tell you...it was so intense. The memory that stays with me is the wind blowing Jerry’s hair around as he nailed the verses down, so amazing. I couldn’t stop playing it for about a month afterwards and always will have a special place in my heart. I also had a near religious experience seeing them play box of rain. They locked down the groove so hard that it felt as if the whole crowd were swinging in sync with the band, so bad ass.
😁😎😊❤️💕💕💕💕💕
Needs more reverb on Jerry's vocals. And a very slight treble dampening on the guitar. Yes, I am picky :P Personal preference of an audio freak.
Nah, it's perfect man. Fellow audiophile. The mistakes and mishaps were what made them great.
SF disallowed the concert in the park to not displease Reagan. Altamont was a hasty improvisation after the bureaucratic overreach
Vocals by who on this song?
Jerry Garcia obviously.
@@sh230968 He sounds like he's trying to imitate Pigpen. Not a typical Garcia vocal.

"I don't know, what I've been told." ...Despite Garcia was responsible for hiring the Hells Angels for Altamont, but heyyy... wtf do we know? Selective memory Jerry?
Jerry Garcia didn’t pull the trigger or stab anyone in
@@arthurallenbrown1305 one thing leads to another.
@@AugustMedia no signs, dividing lines, and very few rules to guide
@@douglast3410 I'm not saying Jerry should have taken responsibility for the stabbing and everything that happened at that concert. But do own up to the fact the 'invitation' was made by him to attend this 'party', as such in this interview below, he's nervous, and trying to compare apples and oranges here, sort of pivoting away from the fact that it was his idea, and that he took the initiative to make it happen, the Hell's Angels as being security at this concert, plus $500 in beer, deal made, see you at the show kind of thing. Garcia never owned up to this I feel, not in this song, not after the concert. I don't even think Jerry admits to it being wrong they never played the concert in the first place, Phil admits it was the wrong idea not to take the stage at Altamont, just made the crowd more aggravated with no music for hours prior to night time. But that's beside the point. I know you guys look up to Garcia as a musician/songwriter, etc. but, take some responsibility for your ideas and actions, just a little. He made a mistake, we make mistakes ... own up to it then. czcams.com/video/SzvUgR4CRvE/video.html
@@AugustMedia had the hells angels ever killed someone at a concert before? thats the whole point of the song. it happened, it was terrible, the feeling of guilt was the same no matter what they did next and they were moving forward because thats all they knew.
