Literally agree with every word you said! Still a fave show of mine but they have some work to do in the writers room for a SOC spin-off/season 3
Part of me thinks they rushed to put some stuff in there because Netflix loves to cancel shows. So they wanted to try to hit some Crows plot points in case they never get a chance? Doesn’t excuse the choices (they’re still bad lol) but I can get where they’re coming from.
I really hope they get a chance to keep going, especially because of how great the cast is. Even with all my qualms, the show just makes me so happy

We needed so much more background for the Crows that took away from the severity of the rivalry between Kaz and Pekka.
I completely agree that the casting and acting was spot on but this season was such a disappointment. I am at a loss at how they can recover from a lot of this.

I was surprised and a bit confused at the changes they've made and where they decided to place moments and characters. But it actually does make me more excited for a season 3 because I don't quite know where they're gonna go with it. It could allow the writers a bit more creative leeway to add something else to these characters and take them in different directions.
I'm not a "faithful adaptation" die-hard so if the writers have something interesting in mind they want to do with Kaz, Jesper, Alina or Nikolai, I'd be up for it. It could suck or it could be good. Idk, the throne room scene with jurda parem and the Cut got me and I also like Mal going off to be Sturmhond.

I actually kinda like how Mal and Alina ended this season, although I assume they'll eventually get an ending similar to the book. The fact that Alina loses her powers just as she's starting to get the hang of things always struck me as a bit depressing. So it'll be nice to see her continue to learn and lead for awhile. And Mal is INSUFFERABLY sulky for most of books 2 and 3, so if he can take some time to figure out who he is and what his purpose is outside of protecting Alina that's just fine with me.

I still really like the acting but having not read the books I had real issues with the pacing of this season. Like objectively a lot happened that should have kept me on the edge of my seat but I was very disengaged, whereas first season I was really into it. I think part of it was that I never felt like any one episode truly deserved to be as long as it was. Basically every episode when I had to pause to get up or do something I was shocked at how much was left and internally groaned a little. Also no idea if this dark grisha magic is explained better in the books but it felt super random to me and I didn't really get what was happening there.

I’ve not watched the video yet but I was so bored with season 2 of Shadow and Bone. I loved season 1 so had high expectations. I don’t know if I’ve just lost interest in it but the whole thing felt so slow and boring. The whole fight with the darkling was boring to me but I found the books boring too so it’s not that surprising. I think the Crows in the TV show just feel a bit directionless to me. It all just felt so forced to me even the relationships were moving fast and I just never cared about anything which is a shame because I liked Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom. I’m really not bothered if they do a season 3. I’m excited to hear your thoughts.

While there has been talk of a "SOC" spin-off, that is clearly not going to happen with the amount of Crows plot they've already laid out in S&B. They realize they were lucky to get one show through so they're going to continue melding the stories into one show. So we book fans shall have to accept what we're given and see the best in it or spend the remaining season(s) being disappointed.

    • @LienesLibrary

Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought Inej’s nemesis that turned up in CK in red was a woman and not a man. Totally agree! The changes this time didn't improve the story very much, in my opinion. At one point I even started to think they weren't going to adapt Six of Crows, as they ended the Pekka Rollins arc so early on. I think that probably your predictions for season 3 (if there is one) are going to prove correct. Why else put Mal and Inej on a pirate ship? The general feeling is that they moved every remarkable scene in the books just to fill gaps ignoring its own pace in Six of Crows.
Anyway, I enjoyed this season, don't get me wrong, I just think the first one was way better.

To me, it felt like the writers were struggling to give the Crows things to do so they just cherry picked moments from the book to pad out their storyline this season. I also agree about Ben Barnes being the Darkling. He certainly looks like a mysterious shadow summoner, but he plays the part too much like an evil overlord and not enough like a misguided immortal seeking purpose and meaning.

Inej's storyline made me angriest in this season, to the point where idk if I'll even keep watching 😭 they COMPLETELY erased my girl's trauma. In the books both she and Kaz struggle with touch, and they're kind of on the same playing field trauma-wise, except Inej is going at it with love and Kaz is going at it with hate. In the show they NEVER focus on Inej's issues, to the point where she's basically just the strong kind woman taking care of Kaz, who is totally healed and ready to be with him if only he was ready, and it's a Problem in sooo many ways

Episode 7 was the worst ..Alina running around letting everyone die before she used her powers, what the heck is she doing? Then on the other side of the battle, they just stand around so much watching each other die and get hurt...it was so stilted. Oh, and the crows were really just jammed in. I watched both seasons and read the trilogy and the Crows-dilogy (but not yet King of Scars or Rule of Wolves). And I think, my feelings about both go along with yours. I liked the show and what they did, hated some changes, but all in all I hope they'll have thought it through and I'll get an entertaining third season.
Here are some thoughts about season 2.
They changed Zoyas role a lot ... and I didn't like it. I loved her Arc in the books and am a little upset that they just totally glossed over it.
I also hate that they changed Inejs plot with Tante Heleen. In the books, there was this tension, this fear, and that's now totally gone.
This thing with Matthias is, they could have shown a lot more than they did. He entered the Hellshow willingly, because it gave him a better living situation (maybe also to forget Nina, but yeah). In the show, he just was there, talked with the Fjerdan (which was fine!) and then got involved in the Pekka Rollins runs the prison-plotline that came as a (admittedly) nice surprise. I also liked the betrayal in the Hellshow, giving Matthias a reason to despise Pekka Rollins, but it was just ... ugh. Also, I think it's not clear if Matthias dreams of sleeping with Nina or if it actually happened (which would change his character a lot). I don't mind that so much, but it made me question if they left something out of the "flashbacks" that they showed in season 1. We'll see. All in all I remain hopeful and am dying to see the crows heist and what they do next.

I quit the season after episode 3, although I really enjoyed the first one. This season seems hollow. The dinamic between Nikolai and Alina is horrendous compared to the books. And that (for me) was the best part in book 2. The dialogues are sometimes weird and forced, especially when Kaz opens up to Inej about his brother.
And it is so different from the books that I don't want to rewrite what I remember about the book's plot.

I agree with a lot of your opinions! as a book reader I am really sad with how they handled the material. Some of the scenes came across as lackluster and cheesy. I am most disappointed with the way they did the six of crows story it felt like it dragged on unnecessarily. For example leaving Matthias in prison for all eight episodes, and how they kind of downplayed the emotional torment of hellgate. In the novel how he loses himself completely and is forced to fight wolves who are part of his identity. I get the change, and not wanting to show that on the screen but it takes away so much from his character at this point. Along with his severe anger at Nina for betraying him. They kind of just brushed over it. Plus why is Pekka suddenly king of the place (makes no sense since most of the prisoners disliked him) The whole crooked kingdom storyline being shoved in and solved so quickly. Inejs lack of backstory and the replacement of the denyuasha (who is meant to be the shadow of her sins) with some weird guy did not make sense to me and got killed off right away for being labeled as a tough opponent. Also the whole love triangle thing they are trying to create with Toyla. So out of character! Wesper did feel kind of rushed but I’m not too upset with their storyline I’m just glad we got to see them interact together. Their chemistry was amazing. Overall, I really don’t think we needed a SOC spin-off as I know they could have included the ice court heist somehow into this season instead of whatever they tried to do with the whole sword arc. It seems like they are trying to milk it badly and it’s messing with the character dynamics. I don’t like how they made Kaz someone who is at their beck and call considering his core desires are always in ketterdam, which means it would take alot of coin for him to leave. Since the shadow fold separates them from most of Ravka and it’s hard to travel from place to place ! I know some people argue that adaptations are supposed to be different from the books, but I feel like the book fans are originally what made the show popular in the first place and want to see the characters done right. I had no problem with the first season and didn’t mind the changes cause they made sense and fixed up the plot holes better than the books. This season however, was really disappointing for me at least. Sorry about the rant! Also 100 percent agree with your opinions on the video. On a positive note the actors also really saved the show they were great. I did enjoy the details of the scenes and liked how the lighting was better than last season. I’m just upset at the writers for the direction they took. It could have been better

  • @Maehedrose
    @Maehedrose Před 10 měsíci

My opinion of what they did with the Crows in Season 2 is mixed. I feel like many of the decisions were done because they weren't sure there would be a S3 at the time and wanted to make certain they got those bases covered. That would explain why they rushed the confrontation with Peka and many important moments with the crew. With that in mind, I was glad to see the confrontation in the show, rather than never see it at all, and I thought it was pulled off pretty well for the rushed job they did with it. Personally, I think they should have just dedicated the entire Season to that plot, if they were going to do it now, but nobody checked with me, first.
That said, the storyline with the sword felt like busywork they were given just to keep them relevant to Alina's storyline and I did not like it. Also, the way they fast-forward Jesper's storyline leaves no time for growth. At least we get something with Kaz, even if it's out of order.
For the most part, though, I'm not bothered by the Crows' character development happening "too soon" in the show because we meet them earlier than in the books. If we had to wait until Season 3 for Kaz and Inej's relationship to move forward people would be tearing their hair out.

I liked the show, and to avoid disappointment I remind myself that this is an adaptation, so sadly a lot of things will change, but what shouldn't change is the essence of the story:
1.- The end, like you said, Alina and Mal's story is over, they go into hiding together and they wanted that, Alina and Mal wanted out of all this, but now it seems is only Mal and Alina is going dark.
2.- Nikolai being robbed of his monster storyline, maybe they will develop in the next season but the PTSD he had because of the events of the war now doesn't exist. And this is major plot line for his and Zoya's storyline in KOS. And don't get me started with the whole Alina being engaged with Nikolai bs. She is not meant to be the queen and I HATE love triangles so I hope Aline get out of the way soon, reunite with Mal and do some fanfic storyline whatever.
3.- All you said about the crows, I am not totally upset but some of the famous lines, and facing Pekka should've been done just like in the books. Maybe I am a little upset.
