  • For those of us here in the US, who didn't get to experience Audi's 'RS' Models until the 2007 RS4, the 1999-2002 'B5' S4 is the connoseur's choice. With classic styling and proportions, a stout Twin-Turbo 2.7L V6, and all-wheel-drive, clean examples are fewer and farther between. This one has some choice modifications to bring it up to today's desired performance level.

    Only reason I "hate Drive+" is because I currently pay for it and it's been 1 month and 3 weeks without ANY SINGLE CONTENT. Not to mention the level of content is a serious let down compare to what it was supposed to be (ie: LaFerrari video with Chris Harris...)
    No information, no content, nothing. Why am I paying for it? I truly wonder... I have 10 days before paying for nothing again. It's not a question of money, it's a question of principle. Being let down, paying for nothing and being borderline lied to ("one 30 minutes video per week", yeah right...). That's what pisses me off a little...

    one thing i don't agree with Matt, is when he said this 2.7 tt engine isn't reliable. if you keep up to date with maintenance these motors are great. the 2.7tt is also in the Allroads, A6, and never hear bad reviews on the motors in them. the 2.7 tt is a great motor, plain and simple

      I disagree with alot of what he says. Most of it is complete bs. "Curse of the Nogaro"? All color b5 s4 got stolen, and Nogaro is NOT "by far" the hardest color avant to find. Do your research Matt, before making yourself look like a fool. However, this one take was a lot more on par than that shitty drive+ you did. Well, except dogging on the "bouncy shifter" (vw trademark btw) that nobody else seems to have a problem with. But, I digress, tst-drive-drive+ whatever, is your opinion, and you're entitled to it.

      @d14_x80 Před 8 lety

      +TheSmokingTire Bahaha really? That stuff happens to other cars too. You come up with two fender benders and a (manual) car that rolled on an incline? That's funny. All b5 s4 are cursed, ask me how I know...
      Like I said, you were closer to on par with this video, and used it closer to the parameters which better suits the design of the car.

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  Před 8 lety +13

      +Andy Adyy The point isn't the specific incidents in the forum posts, but they are titled as "nogaro curse strikes again" and such. This is something that Audi people have been talking about in my presence as far back as 2005, when Audi changed the S4's halo color to Sprint Blue. Many speculated the name and color change were because of the curse of the nogaro blue. Just because other things happen to other cars, just because you own one, just because you haven't heard of this before, doesn't mean it's something that doens't happen and isn't talked about.

    I have to disagree with the comment that the 2.7 litre biturbo engine is unreliable. I purchased my 1999 Ming Blue S4 B5 15 years ago with 68k on the clock. As my daily drive it now covered 263k and has never let me down. Engine is stock but other mods are: uprated snub and engine mounts, short shifter kit, uprated front discs and H&R coilover kit. The car is still quiet, smooth and fun to drive. And finally, it has now achieved a certain retro cool and recognition.

  • @halsoy

    I just gotta applaud Matt for pointing out what should be obvious but for a lot of people it really isn't: 4WD/AWD only helps ON power. You wouldn't believe how many people I've had to explain this shit to. Especially the typical SUV driver. Living in winter country, having to explain to people going fast on snow isn't safe no matter your drive system shouldn't be be needed. Because we ALL have 4 wheel brakes. In fact, in some cases a 4WD system could make matters worse when braking/losing traction because of added mass.

    • @DanTaninecz
      @DanTaninecz Před 5 lety

      Exactly. Driving up over a pass in WA in early winter last year saw 5 cars in the median spun out. All SUVs, all clearly lost control on brake and slid into the ditch.
      Scary stuff how much people trust AWD. I had just put new tires on my fwd vehicle and never slipped.

    I owned a 6MT Santorin Blue B5 S4 Avant for a few years, it was a great car to drive and had loads of power. One thing to keep in mind is owning and keeping these cars up to par is a full time hobby. This guy has put probably hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars into his to get it to the point where it is now. Unfortunately it's a never ending project, you fix one thing and another issues pops up, they will nickel and time you to death. I put about $6K in maintenance in mine over a two year span and only 12k miles as it was not my daily lol. The owner before had $10k of receipts that he gave me as well. I miss mine a lot but in the end, the juice just wasn't worth the squeeze for me to keep throwing money at it nor do I have the time anymore to constantly be wrenching. The bang for the buck can't be beat though as these things can be found dirt cheap. I'm glad I was able to experience owning one of these.

    • @JayDutton
      @JayDutton Před 8 lety +2

      +Carmicha3l FWIW it only left me stranded due to a defective power steering pulley that caused the belt to jump and get eaten up. But ya, they are 15 year old cars with high mileage that have been driven hard. I knew what I was getting into before I bought it, I got for a song as the guy prior to me just wanted it gone. Lots of things to go wrong such as turbos (guy before me replaced), wheel bearings, timing belt changes, water pumps, power steering pump, brakes, control arms ( i replaced all of them up front lol ), cam chain tensioners, heater core, AC Compressor, shocks/struts, rear strut towers rusts, chasing boost leaks, HID ballasts, power locks, window regulators, etc, etc, etc. It really never ends lol.

    • @JayDutton
      @JayDutton Před 8 lety

      +TheCobruhAlienat0r depends on how they were taken care of, I've had about 10 Audis/VWs and the B5 S4 was BY FAR the biggest money pit and most expensive to own. The others I have owned were relatively painless experiences. I currently have an 09 A4 Avant with 120K on it that has had zero issues since 75K other than routine maintenance. I also have a MK6 GTI that is under warranty for my commuter, which I haven't had a lick of problems with other than a recall on a water pump.

      I've always been told by mechanics to avoid VW cars because the parts and labor is expensive and they aren't reliable usually due to electrical issues and other engine issues.
      They've said that if I really wanted one to just lease it so I could get out of it before all the issues started to arise.

    • @wangonguy62
      @wangonguy62 Před 8 lety

      +TheCobruhAlienat0r I'm a mechanic and I would say it used to be true that euro cars were more expensive to fix but I think those days have past. unfortunately they are all getting expensive to fix because of what we demand from a car. all the domestic manufacturers own euro companies now and trade technologies so you see more expensive parts being used because of this engineering. I mean a ball joint for the current ford focus is 2 or more hundred dollars because it comes free with an aluminum control arm. and then you have all the tech crammed into cars now that will fail at some point and won't be cheap.

    TOTALLY feel the whole axle thing discussed at 2:15. I recently thought I had blown the auto trans in my girlfriend's B5. I was in a merging lane and went to punch it, and the car would rev up, but wouldn't move under its own power. I also heard some bad grinding noises. Really had me worried for a second. A tow from AAA and a new front passenger-side axle later, and she's good as new. The B5 is a great platform. In my opinion, while there are certainly more reliable cars out there, they don't "get everything right" in the way that the B5 does timelessly. These things were built to last forever. We have had ours for a couple years and have around 240k miles on it, and I'll wager that it'll reach 300k in our hands. The Quattro AWD is unbeatable out here in the Colorado winters and has made countless otherwise miserable long drives through the snow a ton of fun. The B5 has the right amount of performance and refinement for the street and is incredibly practical under almost all circumstances. They really make an excellent daily if you are familiar with them and willing to give them the little extra attention that they inevitably will require.

    Of all the B5 Avants you could have tested...you really use a Tip Swap with Frankenturbos? Sigh...so many tasty choices in SoCal when it comes to these cars. Nothing against this car in general, but I think there are better examples locally with better upgrades that would have made for a better production. Either way, thanks for keeping the B5's alive!

      +Xero to 60 This is the third B5 S4 I have filmed. The other two had 600 and 450 whp respectively. And it doesn't really matter. My least favorite of them all was the 600 WHP one. Peaky and buzzy, and still didn't handle very well. you can see the video with the other two cars on Drive. Besides, it should be pretty common knowledge at this point that One Takes are done by submission. If all these "better examples" are out there, and they don't send me their cars to review, there's not much I can do about it. It's not like I am choosing from 20 options for every video. 95% of the cars submitted to me make air. All three B5's submitted made air.

      +Andy Adyy The owner of that car was great, And yes, his 300,000 mile car is impressive. I just didn't like what happens when you put 600 HP in one of those cars, but that's not to take away from how nice the car is.

    • @fatexer0
      @fatexer0 Před 8 lety

      +TheSmokingTire I guess you are assuming that we watch what's on Drive, and that we know that your videos are done by submission. Not sure how that's "common knowledge", but either way it's your deal and you make the choices. I guess people should make it a point to send more submissions to you!

  • @SuperSpetterpoep

    And BTW, when going modified from S4 to RS4 B5 specs, you really should increase the engine's cooling capacity as well. The RS4 engines are really different compared to S4's instead of just parts, cooling is way improved and the RS4 B5 equips an oil-cooler in front which opens automaticly at 110 degrees if i'm not mistaken.
    Basicly the RS4 B5 avant is way more suitable for 'beatings' then an S4 to RS4 specs is. So anyone going for a conversion, please check your cooling. The S4 B5's on RS4 specs run way hotter then RS4's.

    I love how even the owner is surprised it lasted 12 minutes without breaking...I'll never understand how people can get into Audis...but I mean if you like to live on the edge there isn't a better car. Every time you touch a switch, turn, brake, accelerate, shift or even look at the car something may break. All jokes aside my friend had a b5 s4, it was comfortable, looked good and was fun to tool around in. Its one of those cars that I like, I could just never bring myself to purchase. Its like a boat, the best one is someone else's.

    • @tommyistommy
      @tommyistommy Před 8 lety

      JerZeyFiveOh Yeah, maintenance is everything. The thing is, they depreciate so fast due to the high and frequent repairs needed so almost every one needs more than they are worth at this point. Most people don't realize that expensive cars are still expensive to repair even when the entry fee is low.

    CAUTION !!! the cars with a automatic trans do not have the thrust bearing on the crankshaft that is needed for the MT when you press the clutch you are putting pressure on the crankshaft forcing it into the block. if you are making 25 psi boost and a have all of the rest of the accessory's sorted out (exhaust , bi pipe, air intake, inter coolers, injectors) you should be 450+ whp, I am running a similar setup I was at 360 hp on ko3 before I went to the k04 and then the franken turbo ko4 s.

    Man i'd love bring my B5 RS4 2001 in for a driver review. At first in this vid the car looks far from ready. What are those 3 beeps upon starting? Low oil or fluids? Second it seems to shake on every bump it gets, meaning the shockers are either worn or bad, far from being comfort. The 2.7T even in the RS4 is reliable. The turbo's in my car (K04) did over a 100.000km, with tuning you just have some shorter intervals with small / great maintance but when such a car is in the condition it needs to be it drivers fucking perfect.
