Marthe Cnockaert worked as a nurse during World War 1, who spied for both British and German Intelligence as a double agent. She was awarded the Iron Cross by the Germans, National Order of the Legion of Honour by France (the highest French order of merit, both military and civil established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte) and a British certificate for gallantry from Winston Churchill.
During World War 2, she was living in Manchester and despite her retirement, she was listed in ''The Black Book'' of prominent subjects to be arrested by the Nazis in the case of a successful invasion of Britain.
Her memoir, entitled ''I Was a Spy'' was published in 1932 whose foreword was written by Churchill himself.
