- This is another video in my series “Walks in Hampshire” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode I visit the pretty village of Cheriton & explore the surrounding countryside.
My 4.5 mile circular route starts & finishes in the village which is situated 7 miles East of Winchester. After looking at the church, the delightful village green & some beautiful thatched buildings I head off into the countryside, passing the historic Cheriton House.
From the ridge along Upper Lamborough Lane I get to enjoy some stunning views across the valley - which was the location of the Battle of Cheriton in 1644 (one of the first major victories for the Parliamentary Army against the Royalists).
Passing alongside Cheriton Woods, I find the memorial to the battle on the Northern side of the battlefield before heading West back towards the village. I temporarily leave the South Downs National Park as my journey takes me North along the Wayfarers Walk and then Westwards again to meet up with an old friend - the enchanting River Itchen. There I pass by Cheriton Mill & Logan gets an opportunity for a dip in the River before returning to our starting point at the village green.
Finally, I get into my car and drive about a mile or so South, over the A272, to film the final scene in the video - the actual source of the River Itchen itself.

Thank you Dave and Logan another beautiful walk.
Thank you Catherine. It is a great place for stunning views.
Thank you Dave and Logan, a walk to bear in mind when I next visit the area. Take care.
Thanks Christine and thank you for watching.
Thanks again, Dave. I walked this today. The village of Cheriton is lovely and its association with the historic 1644 battle simply amazing. However, the highlight for me, was the stained-glass windows dedicated to the four young man who gave their lives for our country in the First World War.
It really is a pretty village and so much history around in the area. Glad that you had an enjoyable walk there.
A lovely walk and some stunning views Dave. Nice one!
Thanks Mark. A very pretty village & some beautiful landscape. Thank you for watching.
Hello Dave, a lovely walk and I was impressed with the source of the I river Itchen. It is nice to see parts of Hampshire and its history that I may never get time to visit because there is so much to see. Thank you.
Thanks Peter. It looks like they have done a lot of work restoring the area around the "source of the River Itchen" as it looked well looked after.
Followed your walk yesterday 26th August a perfect day for it, thanks Dave & Logan .
Glad you enjoyed your walk. Thanks for watching.
Great video Dave 📹 and an extra bonus catching the bi- plane ✈. Have a great weekend 😀, Brian and Sah
Thanks. You never know what you might come across on a walk!
I'm glad that you took time to go to the source of the river Itchen Dave, realy was a great surprise and a fantastic end to another great video.
Thank you John. I do love trying to find the sources of some of these great rivers - some are easier to find than others!
Nice walk. Good video. I did that one last week with some friends, it was to see the battlefield, much of which you covered. 👍
Thanks. Hope you had an enjoyable walk there. Thank you for watching.
We’ve looked around Cheriton several times, but never got up to the church. Nice to see the source of the Itchen. When we were at Cheriton , back in April, there was so much water flowing through the village, it was difficult to imagine that the source was so close.
I have often driven through New Cheriton on the A272 and never realised that the "source" was so near!
@@DaveFord I was amazed how much water was flowing. The source can’t be more than a mile or so away. New Cheriton is such a pretty village. The children have got a lovely traditional school with a river and a shop just nearby. Heavenly!
Thank you Dave & Logan. Always nice to watch. ❤️
Thank you. We always love walking by the River Itchen!
